Kirlee is the ancestor of the breed and was the offspring of a curly-coated male and a straight-coated calico female cat born with a curly coat.
Originally, breeders allowed the kitten was related to the Cornish Rex breed.
Still, when he was bred with other Cornish Rex cats, the offspring all had straight coats. That’s when it was discovered that Kirlee was an entirely different breed with curly fur.
The "Devon" in the cat's name is decided from the place where he was born Devonshire, England.
