Which airport would you suggest I fly into in the UK if I am travelling to South Devon ? I assume I will have to take the train from the airport to Devon ? I don't mind spending the night either in Manchester or London my first day an taking the train the following morning to South Devon.
I have flown into both airports on prior trips and will have to admit that going through customs in Manchester is a much more pleasant experience than Heathrow.
Yes, Manchester Airport may be easier customs-wise but it's not very convenient for Devon .
Continental fly to Bristol which is the nearest international airport but Heathrow is your best choice for choice of flights .
From Heathrow, train to Paddington then train to Exeter or Plymouth in about 3.5 hours.
From Bristol, airport bus to Bristol Temple Meads station and train to Exeter or Plymouth in less than 2 hours
Into Manchester then transfer & fly on to Exeter Airport.
Devon is much much nearer to London than Manchester - and as there are more flights you might get a lower fare!
From Heathrow take the train to Paddington then a direct train to Devon eg Exeter.
I suppose you could fly to Manchester, but it is illogical. If you find customs delays are worrysome, try flying BA to their new terminal, T5.
Another option is KLM via Amsterdam into Bristol , easy transfers and a lot better than a London airport
Flybe has regular flights between Manchester and Exeter , the journey takes an hour and you can get quite reasonable fares by booking some time in advance.
I have done something like this from Denver seversl times.
I take BA from DEN to LHR, then the HEX to Paddington, and then a train to Exeter . ( Plymouth is also possible.)
One nice thing about this is that there are no flights of stairs with luggage. What time would your flight from SF arrive?

Looks like most of the flights from San Francisco arrive around noon to UK, therefore I have ample time to take the train or a connecting flight .
I will be heading to South Milton from the Train Station or from Exeter airport.
I figured I will flag down a taxi to take me to my final designation.
Thanks for the info about the stairswells~I promised myself that I will only bring one piece of luggage~hopefully the luggage fairy won't sneak a second piece in as usual!
I would try & get a train to nthe nearest station to South Milton. A Taxi from Exeter to South Milton will cost a fotune.
Ivybridge might be the nearest mainline station to South Milton, then take a taxi.
Well at least you are allowed two items of luggage in the hold - I've never understood why on a flight to SFO or LAX for example two items are permitted, but a flight from London to Hong Kong (for example) only one item is permitted.
Do not assume that you can step off a train at a rural station such as Ivybridge and hail a taxi - the chances are there won't be one ! Best to try and book one in advance.
