Film "Sexy Baby" follows teen, woman's labiaplasty and pole dancer .
'Sexy Baby' Clip: Young Girls Discuss Porn
Oct . 18, 2012— -- Three young women from disparate backgrounds have one thing in common: They are bombarded daily by a culture that is saturated with sex -- from rap lyrics to the fashion industry to cyberporn .
Winnifred, 12, a precocious New York City girl on the cusp of adulthood, wears fish-net stockings and low-cut tops, striving to emulate her musical idol, Lady Gaga .
Laura, a 22-year-old kindergarten teacher from Alexandria, Va ., saves her money for vaginal plastic surgery , convinced reducing the size of her labia will change her life .
Nichole, 32, of Clearwater, Fla ., was once Nikita Kash, a stripper and pole dancer, but now, all she wants is to have a baby with the husband she met in the porn business .
Perhaps they do not represent typical American youth, but they all feel the pressure to be beautiful and to be sexy .
All three stories are intertwined in "Sexy Baby," an award-winning documentary about how technology and pornography are shaping the sexual identity of young girls .
With Facebook, smart phones and instant access to the Internet, a generation of children is getting their sex education from online porn .
The film, a first from former Miami Herald journalists Ronna Gradus and Jill Bauer, opens Oct . 19 in both New York City and Los Angeles before being released on VOD in November . It had its world premiere earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival .
"Porn isn't video anymore, it's on the Internet," Bauer, a former feature writer, told ABCNews .com . "It's one or two quick mouse taps away . And it's very different porn than it used to be . It's really, really angry and not for a woman's pleasure ."
"We created the film for one thing -- to be a conversation starter," she said .
The directors avoid preachy judgment . Filming for three years, they heard from tweens, college students and parents who feel a sense of confusion in a world where sex means power .
The idea for the film began when Gradus, a photographer, was shooting a story on college bars and she noticed even the mainstream ones had stripper poles .
"All the girls were pole-dancing and their guy friends were treating them like strippers, putting dollar bills in their shorts," she said . "It was weird . No one was having fun -- it was autopilot behavior ."
"We are all so desensitized," said Gradus . "To get any sort of attention, they have to put it all out there and one person works so hard outdoing the next ."
In the film, viewers watch the maturation of Winnifred, the oldest of the three girls of Jeni and Ken . At 12, she is an agile gymnast and social justice advocate .
"We know more about Lindsay Lohan than Susan B . Anthony and Ruth Bader Ginsberg," she says confidently, acting out her own play in a middle-school theater group .
"We are the first generation to have what we have and no one to guide us," says Winnifred, a sassy tween . "We are pioneers ."
Winnifred's 4-year-old sister Myrtle follows in her older sister's footsteps, lip syncing to Britney Spears and writhing her little body on the floor .
Their mother Jeni is part-amused, part-horrified raising her old-beyond-their-years daughters . "It scares the bejesus out of me," she says in the film .
Winnifred insists she is too scared to look at pornography, but her 12-year-old friend Danielle says she "bawled her eyes out" when she got a glimpse online of two men and a woman "ferociously banging each other ."
By 13, Winnifred is consumed with her looks . The skirts get shorter and tighter . She primps for a seductive photo shoot with her girlfriend Olivia, later posting the images online .
"Every girl wants to feel sexy -- like Megan Fox," says Olivia, but after seeing a photo of herself in a bra go viral online, confesses, "I felt dirty afterwards ."
Winnifred admits to spending "30 percent my life" on Facebook . Her parents, who are separated, ground Winnifred eight times in six months for abusing her computer privileges .
"Your Facebook photo isn't who you are, it's who you want to be," says Winnifred . "We make ourselves seem like we are up for anything, and in a way, all of this Internet stuff kind of traps you . You started an alter ego that has to be maintained and in a real way, it does kind of shape how you end up and how you actually are in real life ."
"Sexy Baby" also follows Laura, a teacher who has been told by a former boyfriend that her labia looks like "roast beef -- a meat curtain ."
She preps for a labiaplasty with Virginia plastic surgeon Dr . Bernard Stern, who says he performs five procedures a week .
"I have dreamt about this for two years," she tells him, hoping that the surgery to cut back her labia will make her more attractive to men . "I know I am doing the right thing ."
Her mother comes along to support Laura, but is ambivalent . "You are perfect the way you are," she tells Laura, crying about her daughter's loss of innocence .
The young men who influence women like Laura have an unrealistic picture of what is normal, according to the film makers . "Some tell us they have never seen a bush (pubic hair)," said Bauer .
Laura never hesitated to participate in the film, even allowing them to film vaginal surgery, according to the directors .
"One would think it's so bizarre that someone would give you access to something like that, but it's emblematic of the day and age of reality TV we live in," said Bauer . "She didn't even think twice -- really ."
Gradus said college men interviewed in the film were "seriously confused" and reported they often have "drunk sex" because they are "so afraid of it ."
Because of their own age differences, Bauer and Gradus say their own lives are witness to the culture change .
"Both of us date, so we have a pretty good barometer," said Bauer, 49 . "Our experience when we tell guys about the film is vastly different ."
"You inevitably say it's about three women and one has surgery called labiaplasty," said Gradus, 34 . "When Jill reports that to her dates, they ask, 'What's that?' and 'Why would anyone want that?' When I explain it to them, it ranges from "Oh, yeah, I know exactly what that is,' to 'My ex-girlfriend had that .'"
Even Nichole, the jaded stripper, who with her husband recruits talent for the industry, laments the prevalence of Internet porn .
"The adult entertainment world is infiltrating everything," she says in the film . "Billboards look like pornography and regular guys pull porn moves in bed . By high school they are stripping ."
Teaching pole dancing to college students and young mothers, Nichole says her students, "want to be like Nikita Cash, but Nichole wants to be just like them ."
Porn is "sport" sex, according to Nichole . "It's not making love, where you want to cry afterwards, it's so powerful ."
And she has clear ideas about raising the child she delivers by the end of the film . "Porn is for adults, not for kids to learn about sex," she says . "It can't be their first experiences ."
The directors were happily surprised by the positive reaction to their documentary, especially from Winnifred's mother Jeni, who exposed her family to intrusive cameras .
Jeni, 42, told ABCNews .com that parts of the film were hard to watch, but she thought it was "honest" and a good message for other parents struggling to raise children in the Internet age .
"It's naive as a parent to think you can completely protect them from the messages they receive, whether from Facebook, TV or advertising," she said . "You want to protect them because you know better and you don't want it to shape them and their viewpoints . But I have taken the opposite approach . If you can't beat them, join them in the discussion ."
"When you have a 15 or 16-year-old, you can't always be looking over their shoulder," Jeni said . "It may be harder to do it that way than sticking your head in the sand ."

‘Circus of Books,” a fascinating documentary newly on Netflix, chronicles the rise and fall of a family business that was a mystery to the three children in the family it sustained—as schoolkids they thought it was just a local bookstore . Which it was, among other things, with its stock of books and magazines—the New York Review of Books never sold very well, although Hustler flew off the shelves . But there also were the racks of VHS tapes, and later DVDs, as well as displays of sex accessories . In fact, Circus of Books was a purveyor of hardcore porn and a center of gay life in West Hollywood, Calif ., until the internet swept it away . Every good film reveals unexpected dimensions as it goes . The revelations here concern Barry and

Karen Mason,

the straight, plain-spoken and otherwise conventional parents who owned the store—especially Karen, a person with an exceptional gift for living with contradiction, and for resolving it .
“I would never call myself a soccer mom,” she says cheerfully . No, but no one would ever have taken her to be a pornographer . On one level the film, directed by

Rachel Mason,

the Masons’ daughter, is a tale of professional drift and accidental entrepreneurship . Barry had studied film at UCLA, and Karen had been a newspaper reporter—she got her start, she says, with The Wall Street Journal in Chicago, then went to the Cincinnati Inquirer . But she burned out as a journalist and he wasn’t setting the world on fire as an inventor of medical devices that he developed caring for his father, a kidney patient with a dialysis machine at home . Until something better came along they decided to take over a foundering porn shop called Book Circus, modified the sign to read Circus of Books and, starting in 1982, built a business that established a second location in Los Angeles, expanded into adult-film production and became the country’s largest distributor of gay porn .
In its leisurely, episodic fashion, “Circus of Books” functions as a history of the LGBTQ movement, Western division, and of the impact of the AIDS epidemic on the store’s loyal staff . It’s equally an account of censorship efforts, during the Reagan administration, that threatened to put Barry in prison and relented only after

Bill Clinton

came to office . Yet the film’s vital center has no connection with history or politics, and everything to do with anti-gay prejudice visited on the younger Mason son, Josh, by—astonishment of astonishments—his mother .
The circumstances, as the family recalls them for Rachel’s camera—and sometimes with Rachel joining them, since it’s her story too—were anguishingly familiar . Josh, who had long felt himself to be gay and struggled to repress his feelings, came out on a visit home from college in 2000 . Barry was accepting, but Karen was not, to say the least . A devout Jew throughout her life, she’d been taught in Hebrew school that homosexuality was an abomination, and believed it . How she reconciled that conviction with her working life seems to have involved her own kind of repression; the bookstore with its many offshoots was simply a business, one to which she brought no moral judgments, and she was fine with gay people in general, or so she believed . Yet when her own child revealed himself to be gay, she not only disapproved, but saw it, she suddenly realized, as God’s judgment against her for trafficking in porn .
Viewed dispassionately, this is a study of someone living successfully, up to a point, with two irreconcilable attitudes . That’s not so remarkable; people do it all the time . In the context of the film, though, it’s a startling demonstration of how irrational and seemingly intractable prejudice can be . Never mind that Karen and

Barry Mason

were constantly beset by moralizing politicians and would-be censors; Karen was, in her heart of hearts, one of them .
If this were the end of her story, the documentary would qualify as a cautionary tale with a dismal outcome, and there would be no compelling reason to watch it . But Karen’s realization was the beginning of a new era in her life, a dramatic if belated turnabout that makes “Circus of Books” an unlikely source of inspiration . People can indeed live at war with themselves and not know it . Here’s a case of great things happening once peace is declared .

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers created xxx domain names earlier this year in an effort to corral pornography and adult entertainment in a separate space on the Internet . The general public was allowed to start buying up these naughty addresses on Dec . 6, but owners of registered trademarks were given first grabs months ago . The onetime blocking cost is $200 per address, and most buyers (which include celebrities and major companies) plan to do absolutely nothing with the sites after buying them .
Many of those trademark holders were colleges and universities — an industry that has long seen its bright-eyed students, nerdy librarians and philandering professors become erotic fodder . I am guessing that having to come up with a list of addresses to purchase was not only a lesson in modern brand protection, but also an exercise in creative thinking .
So, which addresses made those lists?
Most schools bought just the basics, such as variations of its name and athletics teams . For example, Brigham Young University bought two addresses, BYU .xxx and BrighamYoungUniversity .xxx . Penn State University bought up four .xxx domains: Penn State, PSU, Nittany Lions and The Pennsylvania State University . Indiana University spent $2,200 to purchase 11 domains, including Indianauniversity .xxx and Hoosiers .xxx .
“We’re not trying to think of every variation of Girls Gone Wild or Girls of Indiana or Hoosier Girls,” Valerie Gill, the university’s director of licensing and trademarks, told the Associated Press . “The possibilities are endless, and we could be spending thousands and thousands on that . The majority of us are just trying to hit our main trademarks and use that as a means for fighting uses we can’t even dream up at this point .”
Still, some schools dreamed that big . The University of Kansas dropped nearly three-grand on a bunch of addresses, including KUgirls .xxx and KUnurses .xxx .

Sex sites to get .xxx Internet domain
Sex sites will soon be able to sign up for web addresses in the " .xxx" Internet domain but a virtual red light district will not guarantee that people can avoid pornography online, Internet experts say .
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers said it would move ahead with plans to set up a separate .xxx Internet domain for sexually explicit material .
Sex sites will not be required to sign up for .xxx addresses but the new domain will enable porn sites to label themselves clearly and help filtering software keep under-age users away, said the ICM Registry, the company that will oversee the domain .
"This is a voluntary initiative," said Robert Corn-Revere, a Washington lawyer who helped ICM develop its proposal .
"We're not trying to put it forward as the ultimate solution for everything ."
Child-safety advocate Donna Rice Hughes said .xxx will not help people avoid online porn because sex sites will still be able to hold on to their old .com domain names .
"It's a nice little red-light district for the pornographers, but I don't think it's going to do anything to protect kids," said Ms Rice Hughes, who is president of the group Enough is Enough .
"It's not going to make filters work any better ."
A spokeswoman for Playboy Enterprises said the adult entertainment company had no plans to move any of its websites to the new domain .
Pornography accounts for more than 10 per cent of online traffic and there are more than 1 million porn websites currently online, ICM says .
Efforts to ban or segregate online pornography have failed for years .
The US Congress in 1996 prohibited the "knowing transmission" of obscene or indecent messages to anyone under 18 years old but the Supreme Court struck that law down a year later on the grounds that it was too broad .
A narrower 1998 attempt has never enforced due to a court challenge .
ICANN, an international non-profit body, has in the past resisted Congressional attempts to set up a domain for sex sites on the grounds that it does not want to regulate online content .
That is not an issue with the .xxx domain because it will be run by the private sector, ICANN spokesman Kieran Baker said .
"As a technical coordinator, we don't pass judgment over content on the Internet," Mr Baker said .
ICANN usually takes six to nine months to wrap up the approval process, he said .
After that it will be up to ICM to get the domain up and running .
ICANN has approved a number of other new domains to complement stalwarts like .com and .org .
In April ICANN approved the .jobs domain for websites offering employment information and .travel for the travel industry .
A company called New .net already sells .xxx addresses but most web browsers are not configured to view them .
