Detailed CHS Speech and Debate Judging Guide

Julian Remedios

Judging is a Joyous Opportunity and Sacred Responsibility!

Don't fault us for trying...the reality is, that without PARENT commitment, this great program just can't function. There exists no group of people, excited and willing to give up their weekends to adjudicate speech and debate competitions; thus, the burden falls to the parents who's children are engaged and benefiting from the activity. Training is available and the link for Judging sign-ups is provided below.

As a minimum requirement of membership, each student must provide parent judging.

  • Four full days of judging from CHS team members (at least one day at a Home event).
  • Two full days of judging from El Roble team members (at least one day at a Home event).

Judge Training Opportunities

We have links to self-guided judging resources further down in the article, but some may be inclined to seek judge training in a more structured setting. All of the opportunities below are conducted in Mr. Chamberlain's classroom in room 601, or on Zoom, where noted.

  • Tuesday, 10/1 (6-7:30pm)
  • Thursday, 10/10 (6:30-8pm)
  • Thursday, 10/17 (6:30-8pm)

The following points are critical in this process:

  • Use a legitimate email address that you check regularly
  • Enter your correct time-zone and cell provider
  • Remember your password or use a password manager

Lost passwords are the most frequent problem we encounter at every tournament. Parent judges show up and they cannot remember their own password.

Using NSDA's "Campus" for competitions (Integrated with Tabroom)

NSDA's "Campus" provides the virtual space for competitions. Below is a short tutorial on how to use the Campus features while conducting your round of competition.

Buyout Option

We would rather have your time than your money, but, if you would prefer, you can pay a fee to avoid judging.

  • CHS buyout is $400
  • El Roble buyout is $200

If you buyout, these funds will be used for hired judges. Please note: this is only available after making your Team Donation.

Thank you for reading this! Happy judging.
