Desperate Living is a subversive thrill ride from start to finish, and while Divine is not featured here, some more of John Waters' cast of characters - Mink Stole as the self-entitled Peggy Gravel, Jean Hill as her murderous housekeeper Grizelda, Susan Lowe as former pro-wrestler Rita "Mole" McHenry, Liz Renay as Mole's girlfriend Muffy St. Jacques, who's trying to make Mole jealous by acting like she wants a man - leading to a botched sex-change for Mole - when she loves her just the way she is, Edith Massey as Mortville's psychopathic Queen Carlotta, Mary Vivian Pearce as Carlotta's longsuffering daughter Princess CooCoo, whose romance with a nudist garbage collector is cut short when her mother has him killed - eventually leading to Peggy selling her out and supporting Carlotta's decision to sentence CooCoo to be stripped of her royal title, gang-raped by her leather-clad shock troops, injected with a rabies potion, and to be exiled to the streets of Mortville - and Channing Wilroy as the leader of Carlotta's shock troops. After CooCoo is sent into exile, she is found by Mole and Muffy's friends, who then bring her to them and explain what happened to her - and how Peggy sold her out and is now working for Carlotta. Then watch the fun as all Hell breaks loose!
The only reason I don’t give it 5 stars is because it doesn’t state anywhere on the listing that this disc is Region 2 or that it is a Warner Archive release (which means it’s a DVD-R). Luckily I have an all-region player otherwise I’d be out of luck.

It's hard for me to believe that there could be John Waters fans who know only his mainstream films. They're pretty good movies, don't get me wrong; but they walk meekly in the shadow cast by his amazing Trash Trio (this, FEMALE TROUBLE & PINK FLAMINGOS). This one is his all-time best, partly because of Divine's absence. Had he been available, he would not only have nabbed the Queen Carlotta role, but become the focus of every viewer's attention as he usually did. (Well, nobody cites FEMALE TROUBLE for the Donald Dasher role, right?) The way DESPERATE LIVING worked out, you finally get a chance to see how good Waters' other Dreamland divas really were. Here, they're VERY good. Fact, DESPERATE features some of the most inspired, OTT female acting ever featured in a movie, "trash" or otherwise. It's as if a heroin-addicted George Cukor decided to remake THE WOMEN in a Maryland junkyard. Mink Stole is unbeLIEVABLE as Peggy Gravel; she seethes with constant neurotic dementia throughout. Her portrayal of misery to the power of ten is less overacting than it is finding the perfect pitch for the role, and settling in on the very spot. The movie-opening running tantrum she spews is one of the funniest things I've ever seen - every third or fourth word is shouted for maniacal emphasis ("The CHILDREN are having SEX!! Beth is PREGNANT!! And I NARROWLY escaped an ASSASSINATION attempt!!") Brilliant. But she's matched, step for weaving step, by Susan Lowe's unforgettable diesel-dyke Mole and the nonpareil Edith Massey as the evil Queen of the criminal shanty-kingdom, Mortville. (If you've never experienced Edith Massey, nothing I can say could possibly prepare you for her....unique...greatness. Let's just leave it at that, okay?) And that's not to discount the typically outre work by Mary Vivian Pearce - who plays her character as if she'd gotten lost on her way to the set of a Julie Andrews musical - or the CGI effect that is Miss Jean Hill. This assembly of female firepower results in one incredible movie that STILL has the power to make you squirt liquid out your nose in helpless laughter, Farrelly Brothers or no Farrelly Brothers. As a matter of fact, the more Waters' early assaults on good taste have become absorbed into mainstream entertainment, the better and more shocking his films look for it. When DESPERATE LIVING stood alone, one hardly knew what to make of it. Now that every lesser talent in show-biz is trying to finance a swimming pool by imitating the Waters touch, it's easy to see, and appreciate, who the innovator and true original is. When Waters made this movie, he was a pariah with nothing to lose...he knew better, but still didn't care. Thus, there's an intoxicating power and thrift-shop integrity to DESPERATE LIVING that none of the Johnny-come-latelies can approach, now that "bad taste" is boxoffice, and safe as milk. If you're gonna wallow in slime, then accept no substitutes, folks: demand DESPERATE LIVING.
If you like John Waters you’ll love love love this movie. This is one of my all time favorite cult classic movies. Please be sure to see this movie!!! Okay price and quick shipping. Don’t forget the popcorn!!
This is a classic example of a raunchy over the top comedy that is probably Water most provocative. He did have a handful of shorter student film type of pictures like Mundo Trasho that has a dead dog in the opening scene as well as having a dirty vibe to it. I love this film, especially the first hour. The idea of 2 fugitives escaping to a reclusive community of misfit criminal outsiders is hilarious in itself. Watching Mink Stole transform from an upper class snob to hillbilly trash is wonderful and worth the viewing just for that. The degree of over the top delivery in this film works in a way that most comedies of this sort fail. The homosexual aspects of the film are a little hard for me to watch(being that i am straight) because it is explicit. One of my favorite films ever is Satyricon and that film is considered by certain critics to be one of the most homosexual film ever. I disagree Desperate Living would fall into this category where as Satyricon's homosexual elements are satire (not to mention most of the characters in the movie go both ways). This film therefore is pure raunch and executed in a masterful way by the direction of John Waters.

John waters at his filthy best...
If you love early John waters,(im not talking about the dreadful homogenised remake of Hairspray) this film should be in your collection. Not as well known as Pink Flamingos or Female Trouble but easily as sick and twisted to appeal to fans of his early work. Sadly no Divine in this movie but most of the other regulars (Edith Massy, Mink Stole,Mary Vivian Pearce, Susan Lowe and Jean Hill playing what would, i assume have been the Divine role) feature. The Plot centers around Peggy Gravel (Mink Stole) and her maid Grzelda (Jean Hill. After accidentally killing Peggy's husband, go on the run. They head for Mortville, A criminal town ruled by queen Carlotta (Edith Massey). From there one can expect everything that one would hope for in an early John Waters movie, Lesbianism, Sex changes, Good one liners etc. A paticularly "memorable" scene with a gun and mink stole in an Anton le vey inspired outfit. Well worth a watch.

No Divine but very good though
The story is as weird as ever and the cast is wonderful. Even without Divine the story works wonderfully. Sometimes John Waters is too drastic for my taste in breaking rules. There are some things like rape I don't want to see and when not in a so called funny way.

Things get rocky at the Gravel household when paranoid Peggy Gravel (Mink Stole) and her murderous maid, Grizelda (Jean Hill), kill Peggy's husband. They escape from the law, only to wind up in the crazy town of Mortville, where Queen Carlotta (Edith Massey) presides over a sleazy collection of misfits, including the vivacious Muffy St. Jacques (Liz Renay). When the queen disinherits her daughter, Princess Coo-Coo (Mary Vivian Pearce), the citizens of Mortville decide that it's time for a few changes!
