Following her suicide, Mary Alice Young keeps tabs on friends and family she left behind on bucolic suburban Wisteria Lane. But this being a prime-time soap (if a tongue-in-cheek one), they all harbor a sordid secret or two. Created by writer-producer Marc Cherry (a 'Golden Girls' alum), 'Housewives' was an instant hit and a frequent contender on Emmy night .

Season 1 of the series about life on suburban Wisteria Lane revolves around the mysterious suicide of resident Mary Alice Young (Brenda Strong). As her friends grapple with the mystery of her death, they also deal with their own issues: Susan (Teri Hatcher) competes with neighbor Edie (Nicollette Sheridan) for the affections of new resident Mike (James Denton); Gabrielle (Eva Longoria) tries to hide her affair with gardener John (Jesse Metcalfe) from her husband Carlos (Ricardo Antonio Chavira); and Bree (Marcia Cross) and Lynette (Felicity Huffman) both deal with problems concerning their children and their marriages.

As Wisteria Lane reels from Mary Alice's suicide, Bree has a grave reaction to Rex's request, Susan vows to kill Edie's shot at the new guy in town and Lynette realizes that motherhood has been the death of her career. Meanwhile, Gabrielle enjoys a lively fling with her lawnboy, and Mary Alice's husband tries to resurrect a long-buried secret in the backyard. Mike: Jamie Denton. Edie: Nicolette Sheridan. Mrs. Huber: Christine Estabrook.

Mike's dog pays the price when Edie crashes his dinner date with Susan; Gabrielle realizes that her lawnboy is taking their fling to heart---and that Carlos may actually have one; and Bree goads Rex into therapy, where the doctor may be the one who needs the most help. Meanwhile, Lynette resorts to drastic measures to keep her kids in line; and Mary Alice's past resurfaces---literally---despite Paul's efforts to keep it buried. Mrs. Huber: Christine Estabrook. Mike: James Denton.

Gab's afternoon delights catch the eye of her manipulative new neighbor; Rex puts a fork in his marriage at a dinner in Mary Alice's honor; Susan shows her angry side to her ex (Richard Burgi) and everything else to Mike. Meanwhile, Lynette teaches her husband a lesson in raising their little monsters; and Bree gets hold of a tape that could answer a lot of questions. Or inspire new ones. Mike: James Denton. John: Jesse Metcalf. Tom: Doug Savant.

Paul feeds the ladies a shocking explanation for Mary Alice's eerie note; Susan measures out a cup of revenge after Mrs. Huber blackmails her into pushing Mike away; Lynette turns to self-medicating to cope with her kids' new ADD diagnosis; Gaby pulls a fast one to keep Carlos from discovering her afternoon delights with John; Bree's tough love impresses her petulant son. Mrs. Huber: Christine Estabrook. John: Jesse Metcalfe. Paul: Mark Moses.

Bree touches upon a Young family mess after reaching out to Mary Alice's son (Cody Kasch); a break-in on Wisteria Lane exposes Mike's motives for moving to town and expands Susan's pool of potential suitors; Gabrielle's mother-in-law visits with a vengeance, thanks to Carlos's suspicions; and Lynette puts her twins to work in order to get them into an exclusive school. Officer Thompson: Steven Eckholdt. Juanita: Lupe Ontiveros. John: Jesse Metcalfe.

Gaby cashes in on Juanita's gambling addiction to keep her out of the snooping business, while Susan bets on Julie to find out why Zach Young has been shipped off to a creepy teen rehab; Bree lets loose on her shrink after sending Rex into a rage over an intimacy issue that may be more his than hers; and Lynette gets a little help in settling the score with an alpha mom at her kids' school. Maisy: Sharon Lawrence. Mr. Shaw: Richard Roundtree. Juanita: Lupe Ontiveros. John: Jesse Metcalfe.

An unexpected ally helps Susan keep an eye on Mike's mystery "friend"; Bree one-ups Rex's guilt gifts for their kids; Juanita gets the goods on Gaby after John dumps her for trying to ship Danielle off to modeling school; a speed-freaking Lynette undermines Tom's ideas during his business dinner party. Shaw: Richard Roundtree. Kendra: Heather Stephens. Juanita: Lupe Ontiveros. Tom: Doug Savant. Mike: James Denton.

Paul takes matters into his own hands after his hit man IDs Mary Alice's blackmailer; Susan pays a price for snooping on Mike; John dumps Gabrielle after Juanita's accident, which gives Bree some horrifying insight into her son's psyche. John: Jesse Metcalfe. Shaw: Richard Roundtree. Edie: Nicolette Sheridan. Mrs. Huber: Christina Estabrook.

Rumors of John's married lover spread---to the wrong suspect---leading to a showdown at Gaby's charity fashion show. Meanwhile, Bree resorts to tattling to teach Andrew a lesson about smoking pot; Lynette goes on the hunt for the perfect nanny; and Mary Alice's son pays Susan's daughter an eye-opening visit. Claire: Marla Sokoloff. Edie: Nicollette Sheridan.

Bree unleashes her inner "woman scorned" after Rex's sordid dabblings nearly kill him. Speaking of scorn, Gaby gets a taste of her own medicine, courtesy of Carlos's jailhouse confession; Susan betrays Julie by sending Zach Young back home to his father, who makes a startling admission of his own; and Lynette employs an underhanded tactic to keep an eye on her new nanny (Marla Sokoloff). Rex: Steven Culp. Julie: Andrea Bowen. Zach: Cody Kasch. Paul: Mark Moses.

News of Mrs. Huber's disappearance brings her equally wicked sister (Harriet Sansom Harris) to Wisteria Lane, where Lynette takes Tom to task over their too-nubile nanny, and Gaby hits a new low to make ends meet. Meanwhile, Susan takes a major step with Mike after learning about her ex's other "other woman"; and Bree sees a recovering Rex's reliance on her as a sign that she should start dating. George: Roger Bart. Copeland: Conor O'Farrell. Karl: Richard Burgi.

The discovery of Mrs. Huber's body---and her secret journals---rocks Wisteria Lane, forcing Susan to cut a dirty deal with Edie to cover up her arson faux pas. Meanwhile, Mike's "client" gives him cause to hurry his investigation; Parker's chewing-gum mishap gives Lynette a leg up at yoga; Bree shoots down George...literally; and Carlos bugs Gaby to help him leave a legacy other than larceny. Felicia: Harriett Sansom Harris. George: Roger Bart.

When Tom's traveling-salesman dad (Ryan O'Neal) drops in for a visit, Lynette catches her father-in-law with a "business associate" who's missing some of her underwear. Meanwhile, Susan finds Julie in a situation not nearly as compromising with Zach, but it's just as troubling; John's parents (Kathryn Harrold, Mark Harelik) have a favor to ask of Gaby; and Rex wants to reconcile with Bree, but all she wants is the country-club membership.

Valentine's Day goes from sweet to sour as Bree and Susan make unsettling finds about the men in their lives and Lynette's nosy neighbor (Kathryn Joosten) accuses the twins of stealing her missing things. Meanwhile, Gaby gets back to what she does best after the Siesta King hires her to model mattresses. Tom: Doug Savant. Felicia: Harriet Sansom Harris. Yao Lin: Lucille Sing. The Siesta King: Jon Polito.

Susan learns an awful truth after Mike's hauled in for questioning about Mrs. Huber's murder; Bree busts the wrong kid for bringing a condom into her house; John's roomie makes Gaby an indecent proposal; and Lynette plays dirty to keep Tom from scoring a primo promotion. Justin: Ryan Carnes. Julie: Andrea Bowen. Zach: Cody Kasch. John: Jesse Metcalfe.

A lice outbreak at the boys' school turns Lynette into a pariah, much like Rex after the arrest of Maisy Gibbons (Sharon Lawrence) reveals the contents of her little black book. Meanwhile, a sewage problem has Gaby drowning in money woes; and Edie helps Susan get over Mike, but ends up learning way too much about another man on the block. Felicia: Harriet Sansom Harris.

Lynette's mouth gets her in trouble after she blasts a neighbor for trash-talking his deaf wife (Marlee Matlin) behind her back; Edie makes Susan pay for stealing her latest man (Rick Ravanello) by messing with Mike's tell-all letter; a death in the family saves Gaby's life, but ruins Carlos's; and the Van de Kamps unite to teach Andrew a harsh lesson. Tom: Doug Savant. Felicia: Harriet Sansom Harris.

Susan's mother (Lesley Ann Warren) makes tracks to Wisteria Lane after she and her latest beau (Bob Newhart) part ways; Bree oversteps her bounds while watching Lynette's boys; and Mama Solis's hospital settlement unsettles Carlos, who lays into Gaby for making him accept a plea bargain. Porter: Shane Kinsman. Det. Burnett: Brett Cullen. Felicia: Harriet Sansom Harris.

Lynette befriends Mrs. McCluskey (Kathryn Joosten) and soon comes to regret it. Elsewhere, Susan's newly unattached mom (Lesley Ann Warren) decides to put romance back into both of their lives. Tom: Doug Savant. Rev. Sikes: Dakin Matthews.

A health scare for Gaby turns Carlos' going-away party into a truly unblessed event; Lynette pulls out the big guns after learning that Tom is working with his ex (Melinda McGraw); Paul Young takes Susan to task for snooping into Mary Alice's past; and Bree goes behind Rex's back to resume her friendship with George (Roger Bart), who may be hiding more than just a crush on the unsuspecting Mrs. Van de Kamp. Sophie: Lesley Ann Warren. Ginger: Lauren Cohn. Felicia: Harriet Sansom Harris.

As Bree's secret friendship with George (Roger Bart) continues to blossom, Rex's health begins to wilt; Gaby breaks her news to John, who decides it's time to come clean with Carlos; Lynette pulls out all the stops to seduce Tom; and Sophie's return to Morty inspires Susan to give Mike a second chance. Morty: Bob Newhart. Sophie: Lesley Ann Warren.

Lynette goes a little too far to keep Tom's flirty ex (Melinda McGraw) from rocking the Scavo marriage any further; Susan finally makes up her mind about Mike; Bree begins to see George (Roger Bart) in an unsettling new light; and Carlos realizes that his legal woes are worse than he thought. Felicia: Harriet Sansom Harris. Mike: James Denton.

In the first-season finale, it's time for residents of Wisteria Lane to pay for assorted crimes and misdemeanors, which means Gaby is about to face the music for cheating on Carlos and we're finally going to get some answers about Mary Alice's suicide. Alfre Woodard joins the cast as the newest neighbor, Betty Applewhite.

I am a married man and first recorded Desperate Housewives (DH) on VHS to watch later on after our kids were asleep due to its airing in the middle of the prime time format (before their bedtimes) and this was definitely NOT appropriate material for their ages (all below teen) plus it aired here during ESPN NFL Sunday night football. Being married with kids, I thought I might enjoy this and somewhat identify, but unfortunately fell behind after only a few episodes and mixed up all the tapes since I stupidly didn't chronologically label/date each 2-episode tape which I tried in vain to do later. Well, to make a long story short, I decided to wait for the DVD set and rented it at Blockbuster, saving all the tapes for this season. Watching it on DVD, I found it to be far better than on broadcast tv, eliminating all the commercials and weekly cliffhangers. I rented out all the discs sequentially and watched all the bonus features on them, especially the extended episodes. DH has become one of my all-time tv faves... so much so that I have bought this DVD box set. I am now caught up to this season and am religiously watching the show each week, never to fall behind or miss another episode again. DH is comfort food... the characters are rich with hidden secrets, pasts, flaws, weakenesses and admirable qualities. Like the writing and production of the ABC show "Lost" (another of my faves), creator,/writer/director/producer Marc Cherry has totally fleshed out his characters and involved them in amazingly well-written plots full of twists, turns and jaw dropping surprises. The four main housewives of Wisteria Lane in the ficticious city of Fairview are Lynette, Bree, Susan and Gabrielle. Gabrielle Solis (Eva Longoria), aka Gabbie, is the self-centered, primadonna, former-supermodel Latina diva who is cheating on her rich, chauvinistic, alpha-male husband, Carlos Solis (Ricardo Chavira) with their gardner, John Rowland (Jesse Metcalfe), a high school boy. Susan Mayer (Teri Hatcher, an Emmy nominee) is the recently-divorced, cute, clutsy, emotional single mom of a teen-aged daughter, Julie (Amanda Bowen), who falls almost immediately for the new neighbor, a mysterious handsome plumber named Mike Delfino (James Denton) who is also a "scoring" target of her neighbor rival voluptuous, vixen, platinum blonde, realtor, Edie Britt (Nicollette Sheridan), whom with Susan is seemingly always in constant competition. The prim, propper, well-mannered, immaculatelely dressed and groomed Bree Van De Kamp (Marcia Cross, an Emmy nominee) is an ultra-conservative, Baptist, NRA member, Republican socialite wife of a doctor, Rex Van De Kamp (Steven Culp) who on the outside is the homemaker/housewife extraordainaire with two teenagers, Andrew (Shawn Pyfrom) and Danielle (Joy Lauren) who seemingly are perfect kids, but this IS Wisteria Lane after all. Lynette Scavo (Felicity Huffman, who won the Emmy) is a former ad-executive who gave up her career after marriage to her fellow ad-exec. husband Tom Scavo (Doug Savant), so that she could properly raise her four children... twin 8 year old boy hellions plus their one year younger brother and infant daughter. This over-burdened wife and mom is the epitome of a desperate housewife - Lynette is probably the most identifiable character on the show and therefore clearly earns the most audience empathy. Each episode opens with a nicely narrated recap/intro, wonderful Emmy-nominated title sequence and Emmy-winning theme by Danny Elfman and is wrapped up in poignant, narrative moralistic fashion. The series' plot opens immediately with the apparent suicide of the four main housewives' neighboring wife group-hub and friend, Mary Alice Young (Brenda
