Curio cabinets made of glass are a nice way to show off the little things that every good collector collects. While there are committed gatherers out there that spend significant time in one or perhaps two kinds of assortments, by far most individuals will generally gather miscellaneous items from their regular routines. Glass curio cabinets are one of the most appealing ways to organise our various memorabilia, but for those of us who pick up anything almost randomly and haphazardly for display and collection, dedicated collectors typically have specialised methods.

The Four Kinds of Glass Curio Designs

There are a lot of different designs for curio cabinets, and you should choose the ones that will show your kids' toys the best. The general type of cabinet you want should be one of your first choices. Glass curio cabinets come in four main varieties: cabinets with shelves, corner display cabinets, wall mount cabinets, and centrepiece cabinets.

Wall Mount Cabinets that can be mounted on the wall are useful, usually don't take up much space, and can be used to display almost anything. As racks for long items like fishing rods and rifles, or for displaying rows of a particular item like vases, books, rocks, and other similar-sized items, wall-mounted glass curio cabinets are popular uses.

Shelf Design Glass curio cabinets of the shelf variety typically have heavy frames made of a stronger material and only glass for the actual shelf space. They are used in a way that is similar to wall-mounted glass cabinets, but they are larger, so they can hold heavier items but are also heavier. One feature that distinguishes shelf-type glass curio cabinets from wall-mounted ones is the presence of two lockable sliding glass panels on the front to secure your children's toys. While these sliding panels will not prevent a determined burglar from simply smashing in the glass, they will greatly reduce the likelihood of your children and other nosy relatives casually pawing at your collection.

One of my favourite Corner Curio glass panels is the corner type: Because these are made to fit snugly in a corner, they don't stand out and take up very little room. Although they are ideal for displaying small trinkets, their biggest flaw is that they don't have much room for bulky items. Rarely are they square in shape. Most of the time, they have two sides designed to fit snugly into a room corner. The exposed side can be rounded off to make more room for your displays or another flat angle (making the cabinet a triangle).

Glass centrepiece curio cabinets are the final option. One of the most beautiful uses of glass for cabinets are these. These are almost always entirely made of glass, or at the very least, they will have a central shaft made of wood or metal around which the glass cabinet layers are mounted. These, as the name suggests, are made to stand alone in the centre of a room to show off your collection from every angle. The cabinet's shape is determined by the shape of the glass panels, which typically consist of squares. The designs typically come in panels of a hexagon or perfect circle.

Using Your Imagination With the four main types of glass curio cabinets, displaying your collection to its full potential only requires a little imagination. One option that some people find appealing is to use panels of varying shapes for each layer of your buffet modern cabinet. If done correctly, this can come across beautifully, even if it just ends up looking cluttered and disorganised. For instance, a glass rack type bureau can have its most reduced layer be a strong rectangular piece, then, at that point, the upper layers are generally U-molded and logically have bigger patterns, so the bureau winds up seeming to be an amphitheatre.

Another option is to alter the cabinet's overall shape by varying the sizes of the panels. For instance, you can make a centrepiece glass curio cabinet look like a typical Christmas tree by using progressively smaller sizes of circular panels higher up, or you can use progressively smaller perfect square layers to make it look like a pyramid.

Lastly, you can use stained, etched, or frosted glass panels, among other options. After all, why stick to regular glass? Utilising a variety of glass can improve the artistic appeal of your curio cabinet. Finding a local glassworker to hire to make your cabinet's specialised panels is all you need to get started.
