"WAP" Reaction Shows How Threatened Men Are By Female Sexuality

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's new anthem brought out an age-old debate over female sexuality.
In this op-ed, Teen Vogue senior identity editor Brittney McNamara explains why the reaction to “WAP” by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion highlights how threatened some men are by female sexuality.
Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion released their song WAP and its music video on August 7, and women everywhere rejoiced in the glory — and overt sexuality — of the song. But it also came out to much controversy. Most of the backlash was about Kylie Jenner being included in the video, but another, age-old discourse bubbled up, too. The song, which serves as an acronym for a well-lubricated vagina, has outraged many because it's a clear example of women talking about sex like men do.
In a now-viral video, conservative talking head Ben Shapiro reads the lyrics to WAP, commenting on how vulgar they are. He even went so far as to tweet that his wife, who is a doctor, told him that a vagina so wet it requires a "bucket and a mop," as Cardi and Megan boast to have, might be a sign of a sexually transmitted infection (a claim many have since refuted). Shapiro isn't the only one who clutched his pearls at the song. In an interview with Far Out Magazine, CeeLo Green used the song as a jumping off point to criticize multiple female artists who talk about sexuality in their music. He called it “shameless” and “disappointing on a personal and moral level.”
It's really no surprise that men like Ben Shapiro are outraged over a wet ass p*ssy. If you scroll through Twitter, there are many low hanging jokes to this effect, but that's not really what I mean. Criticizing and suppressing women who harness their sexuality and discuss it in frank — even vulgar — terms is part of a long history of policing women's sexuality. So no, it's not surprising that some men are threatened when women display and celebrate their sexuality — it's unfortunately to be expected.
Women's sexuality has long been a threat to cisgender men, which we can trace even as far back as the Bible. In the story of Adam and Eve, women are painted as temptresses who will lead to the destruction of man, as illustrated by Eve taking a bite of forbidden fruit. Women's sexual desires were to be controlled, or the woman displaying desires outside the “norm” was to be punished. During the Salem Witch Trials, promiscuity was one of many potential signs of a witch.
Men, however, have always been the arbiters of sex. They are allowed to talk about it in whichever ways they please, but decide when and how women can express their own sexuality. It should be not too much, and not too little.
In music alone, there are countless examples of men talking frankly about their genitals and their sexual prowess. Men boast about the size of their penis, the kind of sex they like, how long they can have sex for, the positions in which they have it — the list goes on. There's been a hefty dose of criticism about the language with which men speak about women in music, and the rampant sexism — and sometimes violence against women — normalized in all kinds of popular music. But when women reverse these roles and use their sexuality as fodder for their art, they're slut shamed, called bad role models, and accused of setting women back.
For Black women and women of color, this stigma is increased. Since Black people were enslaved in America, Black women have been oversexualized, falsely seen as having animalistic sexual desires to either be exploited or suppressed. This translates into the criticism we're seeing today — Lady Gaga sings about riding a “disco stick” and having explicit sex dreams and she's called “empowering,” while Cardi and Megan are “disgusting and vile.”
With WAP, Cardi and Megan are reversing gender roles, owning their sexuality in a way we typically see men do. This, of course, is nothing new, especially in rap music. Lil' Kim's “S*ck My D*ck” is a classic example of taking back language and actions meant to demean women and making it a symbol of power and control. But, it could be argued that both Lil' Kim's song and “WAP” are examples of women working within the male gaze in an attempt to take back power.
In her song, Lil' Kim uses derogatory language about women and weaponizes it against men. Instead of taking power away from the words, she simply perpetuates the power structures she seems to be fighting back against in the first place. Similarly, Cardi and Megan seem to perform sexuality for a male gaze in WAP, rapping about how good they are at heterosexual sex and leaning on lines about genital size. But, like with Lil' Kim's song, the question is: Who gets to decide when women are displaying their own sexual power by flipping gender norms on their head, and when they're catering to the patriarchy?
The answer is certainly not Ben Shapiro, or men like him. Working under so many stereotypes, expectations, and made up rules, it's fully up to women to decide when and how they express their sexuality. Whether or not “WAP” is a product of the male gaze, what's important is that it made Cardi and Megan feel empowered. To criticize how they take control of their sexuality is a double standard, particularly when we don't bat an eyelash when a male artist does the same exact thing.
The criticism against Cardi and Megan doesn't seem to be rooted in feminist theory about language and power structures. Instead, it's about what it is and isn't OK for women to say and do. It's about who wields sexual power, and what happens when they realize they aren't the only ones who have it.
Writer Sharine Taylor pointed out in a tweet (one Cardi herself retweeted) that “WAP” is a perfect example of women specifically communicating their sexual desire — something we have relatively few examples of in pop culture, and something many women feel uncomfortable doing in their own lives.
The fact that it makes men mad isn't a surprise, it's just proof of how far men have to grow before they recognize that women are neither waiting for them to validate our sexuality nor playing by their rules. We can do it all ourselves, just like Cardi and Megan.
