With the Economic Transformation programme in place, Malaysia has since placed strong emphasis on oil and gas projects. Pengerang was slated as one of the sites due to its strategic location and major international shipping lines. The Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex PIPC is one of the largest pieces of investments in Pengerang district and located on a single plot measuring about 20, acres. The project houses oil refineries, naphtha crackers, petrochemical plants as well as a liquefied natural gas LNG import terminal and a regasification plant. With such a mega-scale development across Pengerang, many of the sites were reclaimed, routes were diverted and settlements rehoused. Pengerang had been one of my favorite destinations, with its vast rural-scape, greeneries and long stretches of roads with sparse traffic. But now, it may or may not be so anymore…. Despite all these developments, I decided to make my way there on 22 to 23 August Sat to Sun to check out the new route. The old route is denoted as Segment X. I hope this provides a little insight for those of you who are keen to cycle into Sungai Rengit anytime soon. The old route, Segment X is now closed till The entire brown area in-between Segment B and Segment X is now being reclaimed for the old and petroleum projects. Some parts of this route has recently been tarred, whilst there were several segments which were still sandy with pebbles and gravel. There is fairly few heavy vehicles on this stretch. My little foldie arriving at Tanjung Pengilih Ferry Terminal. The first stretch of the route once you exit the Tanjung Pengilih Ferry Terminal. Some parts of it are newly tarred, which is really comfy to cycle on. The first left junction. Once you see this signage, its time to turn left. The straight road old route is being blocked and manned by a security who will chase you off should you try to trespass and get through from there. Segment B has been nicely tarred and there is a generous road shoulder for cyclists like us. This segment has lots of bends and a lady that I was chatting with at the ferry terminal, mentioned that there are 17 bends on this route. Throughout this entire 14km, I only managed to catch one hut that one could seek shelter in, should I run into a heavy downpour or storm. The first stretch of road once you turn left from Segment A. It is relatively quite an easy stretch to cycle on, with a generous road shoulder and minimal heavy vehicles. Could be quite dangerous if one runs into a thunderstorm or downpour whilst cycling on this route. In Segment B, huge heavy vehicles has a dedicated lane on the right to travel on. Segment B is rather easy with few heavy vehicles. However, once you get to this junction where lots of these heavy vehicles merged into the road that you will be travelling on, Segment C becomes a little more challenging. Although this was only a 2 km stretch, it was pretty challenging as there was virtually no more road shoulder for me to cruise on and heavy vehicles were just whizzing past me at high speeds. I had no choice but to pedal non-stop through this entire segment with a short climb on this route. Road shoulder was very narrow with a curb by the side. Could hardly cycle within the road shoulder and heavy vehicles were just whizzing past. Turn left for Kota Tinggi or turn right if you intend to head to Sungai Rengit. At the end of Segment C, there is a signage here, indicating a right turn to Sungai Rengit or a left turn to Kota Tinggi. I did a right turn here and headed to Sungai Rengit. There is a bit more civilisation here with petrol stations, shop houses etc. Traffic is heavier here, but there is a small road shoulder at the side. However, do note that this route has quite a number of potholes and do keep your eyes peeled on the grounds and on the front for this 5km stretch. Lots of gravel and sand on this segment. And quite a few potholes on this side of the road too. At the end of Segment D, I arrived at this junction. At the end of Segment D, you will come to this huge junction, which is at the mouth of the town. As it is, I made a right turn into Sungai Rengit town. This is the last leg and you should reach the town in less than 1km or no more than 5 minutes once you see this signage. I checked into Hiap Hwa Hotel for my 2d 1n stay. They were not exactly the cheapest, but they were the only ones that I could book on-line beforehand. Most of the other hotels do not take bookings and in recent times, most hotels are fully booked for the weekends. If you are keen to stay for the night, I would strongly advise that you make a hotel reservation prior. Foldie finally arrives at Sungai Rengit after a 25km struggle… Good job, foldie… : D. I got to Super Lobster and ordered a Butter Lobster. The flesh of the lobster was so juicy and tender…. Totally heaven…. Nothing left… And just to remind you, I was there on my own and gobbled up this entire dish myself…!! Facade of Super Lobster Restaurant which faces the sea. It was pretty much the same route which I came from. Just slightly before the Kuan Yin temple, there is a huge juncture to turn left into. On this side of the road, there are less potholes and there is a narrow road shoulder for one to cycle on. There is also a long climb up a gradual slope before hitting the juncture to turn left again. In this D segment, the opposite direction going towards Sungai Rengit was challenging with potholes. At this direction going towards Tanjung Pengilih Ferry Terminal , there are less potholes and cycling was slightly easier as compared to the opposite direction, except for …. Can be a bit tedious… but still manageable. At the end of the upslope, turn left at the junction to go back to Tanjung Pengilih Ferry Terminal or go straight to get to Kota Tinggi via the highway. As compared to Segment C from Tanjung Pengilih to Sungai Rengit, the returning was much easier as there was a proper road shoulder as well as a long downslope to gain speed. In Segment C going towards Sungai Rengit town , the road shoulder was narrow and challenging. However in the opposite direction, it is very much easier with a wider road shoulder and long downslope. Segment B is the longest segment as compared to all the other segments, but I would say it was relatively easy and flat grounds throughout this segment, except for lots of bends to cover. No shelters at all. Rain or Shine…. It gonna be just you and your bike…. Think this nice piece of green field would be gone in less than a week too…. The amount of construction is really massive and the scale was much much much bigger than I could imagine. If you see coconut trees, breathe, breathe, breathe…. Follow the road and turn right to arrive at Segment A. There is lots of shade from the trees flanking the roads with the nice cool sea breeze from the sea just on your left. Additional Tips. Since getting my little foldie some months back, he has became my best friend. Our favorite location is Punggol beach, which is a mere 6km away from home. All of these little outings were within close proximity to home and confined to our little red dot. Tanjung Pengilih to Sungai Renggit : 18km 1hr 20mins Denoted as yellow line 2 in map below. Sungai Renggit to Tanjung Balau : 37km 4hr 45mins Denoted as pink line 3 in map below. Additional 6km from Desaru round-about to Tanjung Balau. No worries, I jes need to follow that yellow highlighter cap in front. It is getting increasingly difficult to cycle from Tanjung Pengilih to Sungai Renggit with so many of these huge heavy vehicles crossing in our paths. These huge heavy vehicles brought with them mud, sand and gravel and some were spilled out during the transportation process. The roads became sandy and muddy, and hence, increasing the level of difficulty in cycling. After an 18km from home to Changi Point Ferry Terminal 1 and another 18km from Tanjung Pengilih to Sungai Renggit 2 , my knees were screaming with pain. Slightly out of Sungai Renggit town, we would pass by this site with red soil. It never fails to bring a wow especially so, when placed against a beautiful blue sky. It feels like Ayers Rock had moved to Pengerang! My cycling mate bumped into some of his blog readers whilst we were on our way from Sungai Renggit town to Tanjung Balau. Its still a long long journey ahead for foldie … … … …. At the back of my mind, I was secretly planning my contingencies such as hitching a ride! Haahaa… : O. Comeon, foldie, you can do it… Ganbatte…!! I was so so so dead tired with fatigue that every single pedal counts. Ready to set off for Kota Tinggi…?? Jia You! Passed by the Desaru Fruit Farm which we came to some years ago. Beautiful memories of that trip came flowing back. With no shelter ahead, the sky looked like it was about to burst into tears and there were lightning flashing across the sky. OMG, prayed hard and kept my fingers crossed for the lightning to pass quickly and thankfully, our prayers were answered. Setting off for Johor Bahru. Wish us good luck. Did 16km. Only 24km more to go… Comeon, comeon, comeon…. Whooppsss… Did you see something on the signage?! No bicycles allowed on the expressway and we were actually criss-crossing in and out of it. Ohh dear… It was so dangerous. We were actually a road hazard not only to ourselves but to the other road users too. This might be the first and last time we gonna use this route. We went through tunnels and look at how fast the vehicles were travelling at! My gosh…!! Had wanted to make a dash back to Singapore but decided to stay for the night after we saw flashes of lightning across the sky. The pedestrians customs was just behind me. So near, yet so far…. Took MRT to Woodlands. Took bus from Woodlands Interchange to Sengkang. Cycled home from Sengkang Interchange. Last leg of the trip from Johor Bahru back to Singapore. This is my first time cycling across Woodlands customs using the dedicated motor vehicles lane. The motorists were going so fast and zooming past me. It was the first time I pushed my bike into a train without folding and also a first time folding the bike and bringing it onto a bus! Cycle Feet Firsts Friends Travel. This time round, we met up at 9am at the Changi Ferry Terminal, but soon realized it was a tad too late. We only managed to get onto a boat at We read your blog posts on Pengerang and we are heading there today! As we continued chatting, Poonam and Jacintha pic as below shared with us that they had printed out the Pengerang map that Darren had put up on his blog, took notes, brought along their own bikes and helmets and were going to cycle from Tanjung Pengelih to Sg Renggit town, stop for lunch at Straits View Restaurant as per our last recommended and then head on to Desaru for the night. They had read our earlier blog posts and were going on their maiden long distance cycling trip in Pengerang. Good job ladies, keep it up…!! Tanjung Pengilih the jetty that we will be arriving at to Sg Renggit town was about 18km about 2. It usually takes us about 4 hours to cover this distance. We were really glad they took on the challenge and did the entire route. If you happen to see this blog post, please give us a shout-out and share with us your amazing experience. The two gals and their guy friend left on an earlier boat whilst we got on an We got into Sg Renggit town close to 1. One of the staffs recognised us immediately and ushered us to a table. Her son was surfing the net one of the days and came across our blogs and showed it to her. Although our pictures were not prominent, she could remember us at an instant. We were really heartened. The salty yolk lobsters came in this very apt shell-serving-plate. It was quite yummzz and we almost licked up the entire plate of the sauce. The staffs could even re-use it without anyone knowing!! The ginger wine egg soup tasted just as good as we had six months ago. I love the xiao bai cai best of all. Darren loved the curry brinjal for its strong fragrance and texture although it reminded me very much of curry Twistees. Total bill : RM By the time we ended our meal, it was close to 2. This time round, we were lucky. We managed to get a triple room at RM 60 all their RM 50 twin rooms were fully taken up. The room was quite huge with a Queen and a Single bed. Although the mattresses and pillows were not comfy and the toilet reek of a weird smell, the wifi-connection was the strongest amongst the so many hotels that we had stayed at, at Sungei Renggit town. Had tried so many accommodations, finally got to try Let Seng Hotel. After dropping off our stuffs, renting a bike from Mr Soon and slurping down an ice-kacang and a chendol, it was 3. Gosh… This has got to be the latest time we set off…. Showing off my new cap-helmet and having an ice kacang and a chendol to cool off before we even started!! Trying a different route this time, we ventured from Sungai Renggit town to Tanjung Pengelih jetty. The journey was 18km one way. The initial segment of the route was heavy traffic with huge construction vehicles, treating our faces to dust facials as they went past. The road shoulders were wide enough but most parts of the road shoulders were lined with sand and gravel making it slippery and prone to falls. I had a couple of near misses and could now fully understood how my cycling buddy fell the last time round. Most parts of the road shoulders were lined with sand and gravel making it slippery and prone to falls. Really gotta be extra careful when cycling on this route. We passed by a Kuan Yin temple. It was a small temple but the figurines were very well done and intricate. There was even a flagpole at the front of the temple. We took a left turn on one of the roads and came to a beachside temple and this short jetty. We have to be the most crazy peeps for we can be camwhoring on literally anything and everything; drains, urinals, escalators, walls, construction sites and even this very nondescript jetty. We spent almost an eternity cam-whoring at this jetty and never did get to Tanjung Pengelih jetty. We started our journey back to Sungai Renggit town. The warm rays of the setting sun started beating down on us as we cycled past a mosque and a carpet of a lalang field. The smell of the rustic villages, the vast fields of nature and the amazing creations of Mother Nature reminded us that it is scenes like these, that have been spurring us to continue coming back here, time again and again… experiencing a new adventure each time. Jade Garden which was once located at the restaurant stretch had moved and we decided to go check it out. The 4-storey building comprises of a hotel at the upper levels and huge ballrooms on the first level. The ballroom could accommodate more than a hundred tables. Venturing around the grounds, we reckon they were preparing several lobster or prawning ponds. Restaurant on first level and hotel on upper levels. Gotta try this accommodation the next time round. Hopefully, its open by then…. Banquet setting with huge tanks of live lobsters at the new Jade Garden Resort. Back at our dining table, the menu itself was quite a heavyweight one too. It is made from thick solid cardboard as heavy as a lobster! And they even have desserts now too…. Only upon my comment on the menu, did she give the slip that she was the boss of the resort. The fish maw soup and cabbage were quite tasty. The deep fried baby squid got cold after our incessant shooting. Our bill came to RM It was relatively quite cheap considering the huge, small portions that we had. Eyes Feet Gluttony Travel. After a failed attempt at cycling from Sungai Renggit to Desaru three months back, my cycling buddy , Darren and I have been itching to give it another shot once again. I borrowed a helmet from Candida. I decided to wear a pair of long tights instead of jeans. We brought along sunshades, sunblock, oral sunblock, face masks, isotonic drinks, RedBull, apples and bananas for our cycling expedition. This time round, we met up at Changi Ferry Terminal at 8am and boarded a 8. The ferry terminal was sparse with commuters. It was a far cry from what we experienced on Good Friday three months back. As like our previous visit, we rented our bikes from S. Motor for 2 days at RM15 per bike. In my previous trip, I got one without any gears and I had a hard time struggling with the up and down slopes. This time round, I rented one that has three-gears, whilst Darren had one with six-gears. Missing the butter lobsters that we had at Sin Kong, we quickly cycled over to Sin Kong restaurant. Starved as we were, we ordered steam lobsters, a steamed fish and stir-fried Nai Bai in garlic. The lobsters tasted just as fresh although it was not as tender as we had wished it would be. It felt a tad overcooked. The saving grace was the stir-fried Nai Bai which tasted just as gorgeous as like the first time we had it. As we burped down the last bits of our lunch, it was time to head out for our 35km cycling from Sungei Renggit to Desaru. We had resoluted NOT to make more than 3 photo stops and to make it to Desaru this time round! The previous both times, I fell. By now, the once graceful lalang on the right side of the road had all dried up and withered. It had been pretty wet the couple of days prior and the roads were lined with red streaks of mud and with that, we had lesser dust facials too! Time check : 3pm. We past Punggai Beach and arrived at this same point where we gave up and turned back in our previous trip. In our previous trip, we arrived here at 4. This time round, we were 1hr 45mins earlier. Yayy… Right on target. We had a short little break, gobbling down an apple and a slice of bread before we continued on our arduous journey. I paced up and joined them at the shelter. They were very inspired by his previous experience and used his blog as a reference to make their way here! As we parted our ways, we were off to even more up and down slopes. We thought the past 3 hours were bad, the worst was yet to come! My thighs burnt like lighted kerosene with every upslope. It was tough. I went slow but I paddled on. After surmounting an upslope, all my eyes could see was but another slope…. For a seasoned cyclist, the downslope was the best part of the journey to gain enough momentum to cover the next upslope. Some of the downslopes were almost 60 degrees in elevation, and being a non-seasoned cyclist, I was not trained and prepared for such steep slopes. I had to concentrate hard and focused on the front — no looking left nor right, up or down. Every swerve or missing a beat would likely land me in crutches. As I had vouched to return in one single piece this time round — I had better make sure I do…! It was really daunting to see slopes after slopes. We wondered when if ever would these slopes end. We finally saw rays of salvation when we came to a signboard indicating that Desaru was just after the round-about. We were on full gear after seeing this signage. We almost burst our lungs yelling for joy. We did the round-about and in less than 10 minutes, we were in Desaru! Time check : 4. We did it in 4 hours! We chose the last accommodation as it was the cheapest and they were the only one that had rooms available. We had very much wanted to put up at Pulai Desaru but it was fully booked for the weekend. We found out later that the City Harvest church was holding their church camp there and hence had took up a huge number of their rooms. The Accommodation. We got to Desaru Damai and enquired for a room. The attendant handed us our room key and got us to check out our room first before confirming. We found it rather queer, but nevertheless, we cycled to our room. Firstly, it was quite a distance to walk since our room was almost at the end of the corridor. Secondly, the hotel does not have any bicycle bays to park our bikes outside the hotel and the reception attendant actually suggested that we bring the bikes into our room! It was the first time I cycle a bike right into a hotel room and to park the bike in the hotel room itself. The hotel room was old and run-down. The tap was dripping. One of the powerpoints in the room came loose. The balcony was filthy with cigarette butts. Well, we only need to stick it out for one night and hence, we decided to just put up with its many deficiencies. We showered, changed out and had a little rest before proceeding to check out the beach and the hotel amenities. We wanted to go for a dip in the sea but there was a red flag warning to it. Hence, we did what we did best on the beach… Camwhore…!! Hunger pains striked and we decided to get back to our room, grab some change and head out for dinner at the neighbouring Pulai Desaru since there was nothing much going on at our hotel. The Dinner. We cycled over to Pulai Desaru and headed for the restaurant at the lobby. The buffet had a good variety of cuisines ranging from staples like rice and noodles to steamboat, laksa, prata, barbequed meats, seafood, salads, desserts, drinks etc. Halfway through our dinner, they even had a live band entertaining us with Mandarin, English and Cantonese medleys. At that juncture, we were full of regrets. We should have opted to stay here instead although it was more expensive than our accommodation. Getting to Desaru was half the battle won. Getting back was another! We were in denial just thinking on how we were going to get back. Target : To reach back before 2pm. Have 1 hour of seafood lunch and take a 3pm cab to Tanjung Pengilih Ferry Terminal. Less than 10 minutes into our cycling, the first slope hit us hard as we struggled up the round-about. At the back of our heads, we knew… we need to get past this killer stretch and all will be well after that! We have come this far! For the next one hour, we struggled up and down the slopes. But this time round, with some little experiences from the previous day, I was happily trying to gain momentum from the downslopes. We had a good rest stop here; using the washroom, topping up our isotonic drinks and refueling with a banana. Down the same stretch, we saw this gorgeous rock formations popping up from the sea and swarm of camwhorers. How in the world would we miss anything for this? We jumped off our bikes and headed for it. Along the route, we passed by a fishing village where we stopped to capture some shots. As we cycled on, there was very much lesser traffic on the road as compared to our previous trip. Throughout the entire return journey, we did not meet a third cyclist on the roads. We wondered why. Our take was that most seasoned cyclists would have done it within a day and got back by then. We were kind of thankful for the drizzle which cooled us down and make our cycling expedition a little more manageable. In our previous trip, it was bright and sunny and we were totally drained out from the heat and exhaustion. We paddled on and on, doubling up so that we could make it back to the town in time and hopefully for a seafood lunch before we head back to Singapore. We had our last pit stop at the Goddess of Mercy temple where I needed to use the bathroom. By now, we were a mere 10 minutes away from the town. The Triumph. We were so proud of ourselves for this little accomplishment that we did. We endured the butt pains, the burning thighs, the drizzle, the hunger pangs and all to make it this far. It was no doubt a pat on the back for both of us. It was indeed a magical moment for me. No matter how slowly I went, my cycling khaki was always waiting ahead for me. No matter how many cyclists had overtaken me, he was always there for me. To me, thankfully, there was always him where I could count and rely on. When both our mobiles played on this song, it just hit me right in my head. Time to Celebrate. We had buttered lobsters, cereal prawns my all-time favorite! We were starving…. There was a huge crowd in the air-conditioned segment and we took up a little corner by the back door. When the butter lobsters came, we felt that they were not as tasty as when we first tried it three months back. Perhaps there were too many orders awaiting, the butter did not seem to penetrate the lobsters well enough to bring out the buttery sensation. The cereal prawns and sambal kai lan were good but they did not lift us to ecstasy though. Time Check : 2. Off we went to the ferry terminal. Arrives the ferry terminal at 3. Prior to the trip, we were prepared to be totally thrashed out. But this time round, we were better prepared and the weather was very much in our favour, we did not suffer as tremendously painful as we thought we would have. Bring your own or borrow one from home. Motor does not rent out helmets. Buy them from the town or slightly after the town. Thereafter, there are no other stores ahead to grab stuffs. Eyes Feet Photography. On a bright beautiful Monday morning on 25 March, Darren watsapped and enquired if I wanted to make a trip to Pengerang that same Friday since it was a Good Friday long weekend. During that trip, I had a nasty fall and required nine stitches to stitch up my left knee. More of it has been documented here. This time round, not only did I have to relinquish my fears, we were set for an even wilder and crazier adventure! Pengerang is an area at the southeastern tip of Johor, to the south of Desaru. The name Pengerang, covers the dock, immigration post at Tanjung Pengelih, the village of Kampong Pengelih and the nearby town of Sungai Rengit. I thought to myself; 1. I arrived the ferry terminal at 6. Throngs of passengers at Changi Point Ferry Terminal at 6. They do not have a queue system and we had to keep our ears wide open for our names to be called. The bumboats operate from 7am to 7pm departing Singapore and 7am to 4pm departing from Tanjong Pengelih. We waited for 2 hours till 8. We got to Pengerang, Sg Renggit close to 11am. Arrives at Tanjung Pengilih Ferry Terminal fter a 1 hour bum boat ride…. After checking out a couple of hotels nearby, we settled for Tai Hoe hotel costing RM98 a night. Seafood Feast at Jade Garden Restaurant for lunch. We had 2 herbal lobsters, cereal prawns my favorite! The lobsters cost RM16 per gm. We had about gm of it cooked in a succulent sauce with wolfberries. The lobsters and prawns were so fresh that we could almost feel the sea water in it. We started our cycling expedition at mid-noon. It was hot and scorching and we were all geared up in our arm sleeves, sunshades, sunscreens etc. I did not realise that the temple was situated right at the outskirts of Sg Renggit, a mere 5 mins cycle away from the town. We got some shots of the temple as it brought back vivid memories of that fateful day 3 years ago. Kuan Yin temple at the fringe of Sg Renggit town — a mere 5 mins away from the town. This time round, I landed on my meaty bum and there were no signs of fatal injuries apart from a huge bruise on my right shin. As we cycled on, we came across two abandoned go-downs and decided to check them out. They were dome-shaped and there were light rays coming through the high ceilings. A Go-down — a rare sight for urban dwellers like us. During the initial ride, there were very much more vehicles on the gravel-lined roads. On our rights were scores of lalang fields, lush green fields, golden wheat fields lined with coconut trees against the beautiful blue sky with white fluffy clouds. On our left were sad sights of muddy construction and land reclamations for the petrochemical project. Feels like a scene extracted from Eat, Pray, Love. Many times, we had wanted to give up, but we pushed on and on. It was a true test of determination and will-power when all we could see was another slope ahead…. By now, we had cycled for almost 4 hours and our knees were in severe strikes and every muscle in our thighs and calves were screaming for help. At certain points, I had to get off the bike and push the bike up the slope because I was already dead bush and my legs felt like they had been ripped apart from my body! Thankfully, the Tiger Balm that Darren brought came to our rescue and gave us some rays of salvation. The last point of our expedition before we finally made the painful decision to turn back…. And as much as we hated and with great disappointment, we decided to turn-around and head back to Sg Renggit as we were close approaching nightfall. We had fewer photo stops on our way back and as it was nearing evening, the humidity got lower and we managed to make it back in good time — thankfully! Ganbatte to us for getting this far …!! It was of no mean feat as both of us were neither professional cyclists nor were we using one of those pro racing bikes. Many times during the little rest breaks, we were either buttering ourselves with Tiger Balm or giving each other that little nudge we need. We never thought we will be able to make it and when we finally did, it felt so surreal…. W e pushed on, persevered, endured and survived!! This cycling expedition has not only tested our minds and bodies, it has pushed our friendship to another ante as we held onto each other, cheer each other on, struggled on this journey fraught with challenges and difficulties together. We got back to Sg Renggit and decided to have another round of seafood dinner — at Sin Kong restaurant this time round. The aircon was the main draw factor! This time round, we had butter lobsters, deep fried sotong, a mushroom soup and a stir-fried Nai Bai. The lobsters cost RM15 per gm and we had two halves each. The butter lobster was equally as fresh, fragrant, sweet and less salty in relative to the herbal lobster that we had for lunch. The butter lobster simply melted in our mouths. Butter Lobsters… My god… They melted in our mouths…!! The sotong was delicious but a little crispier would have it perfected. The stir-fried Nai Bai was cooked in a simple sauce but it was heavenly! Deep Fried Sotong should have stayed in the fryer for another couple of minutes for that additional crisp. As we struggle to pull ourselves up from the bed at 9am, we were like two 80 year old elderly. Our muscles were so sore and aching so badly. Somebody ate one of its legs…!! One of my childhood favorites — the see-saw. When we boarded the cab the previous day, the cab driver highly recommended the Wanton Noodles and Chee Cheong Fun. Perhaps I was not very much a gastronomy expert and could not appreciate the noodles, I felt that it was rather ordinary and nothing to wow about. The Chee Cheong Fun was a damper as well as there were only a few pathetic slices of prawns and char siew within although the skin was soft and smooth. Smooth and Soft Chee Cheong Fun skin but too little filling …. Just across the street was the famous ice-kacang and chendol stall recommended by my group mates in my previous photo trip. Both at the same time then…. Merrybrown with the magic word WI-FI! After our lunch, as much as we did not want to move our aching bodies, we headed for the ferry terminal at about 1. By the time we arrived back in Singapore at about 3. This cycling adventure has been one crazy, incredible, unimaginable journey with the Humpty Dumpty fall, scorching heat, killer pains and being engulfed in dust n smoke. What we thought impossible, was made possible during this trip. We never thought we could cycle 50km but we did. Eyes Feet Firsts Photography. Having subscribed to numerous meet-up groups, I came across a posting to visit Pengerang to shoot the Milky Way. I visited Pengerang two years ago, and had a terrible fall back then. I was a little hesitant to sign up but did so eventually on the account of shooting the Milky Way. I did not manage to shoot the Milky Way in my recent Mt. Bromo trip, and I was hoping to do so during this trip. Pengerang is a small custom cum immigration post in southeast Johor, Malaysia. It has a few houses and a road leading to Sungai Rengit — the larger town where food and lodging can be found. However, the name Pengerang is often used to cover the dock and immigration post at Tanjung Pengelih, the village of Kampong Pengelih and the nearby town of Sungai Rengit. Seafood is usually the main reason why visitors flock to Pengerang; with treats like lobster and crab much cheaper than Singapore or even JB. The main restaurants for delicious and affordable seafood are ;-. This sleepy little town was awaken by the recent strike over an oil and gas hub to be developed in Pengerang. The group met up at Kranji MRT at 7. As we arrived in Pengerang, many of us were famished and decided to settle for some Roti Chanai more commonly known as Roti Prata in Singapore for breakfast. The Roti Chanai stall was a few blocks away from where I used to stay in my previous trip to Pengerang. I took some time off from the group and went to re-visit the hotel that I stayed previously. Memories of that trip came flooding back to me, as I recalled how the three of us cycled around the town, how I fell, how my two very gracious and kind friends helped me to the clinic, had me stitched up, had my room changed from 4 th level to 1 st and went out to buy dinner back for me. Though it was a painful and frightening experience, it was one of my most unforgettable trips. After a hearty breakfast, we set off for some shooting in and around the coastal area. We came across a few freshly-born kittens. I was never a feline-lover but this little one got me smitten. It has such beautiful and innocent eyes that I doubt anyone could resist. We saw this elderly fisherman mending his net and he was very kind to even pose for us. By then, it was past noon and it was time to feed 12 starving stomachs. Anthony mentioned that this seafood restaurant serves better seafood than the others. Dishes after dishes came and we ate our fill. It was such a sumptuous, satisfying lunch. We wondered around the town; bought their well-known pastries, had ice-kacang from the old traditional ice-kacang machine, got some shots before we headed to our resort for the night. Enroute, we stopped at the beach and had a whale of time cam-whoring. It was such a splendid day to be soaking in the sun! We finally arrived at our resort after a bumpy ride through a vast palm oil plantation. But when we arrived and went around the resort, we realized it was well worth the bumpy ride. The resort lies about 40 meters above sea level and offers a spectacular, gorgeous panaromic ocean view of the South China Sea. There is a lily pond amongst the cottages and it was just right in front of the cottage that I was staying in. The cottages around the lily pond were lighted up at night, bringing much serenity and peace to the resort. The cottages are very clean with attached bathroom, bed, table, bamboo sofa and cabinet. Best of all, our cottage has an outdoor shower area! It was like a modern kampong — very idyllic and rustic. Perhaps that was why it had such excellent reviews on Trip Advisor. Night fell and we had a sumptuous BBQ dinner under the stars, as we sat at the alfresco dining and immersed ourselves in the soothing sounds and cool breeze of the ocean. We called it a night by 10pm and headed to bed as we needed to be up at 12 midnight for the shooting of the Milky Way. Before I could knock out, I was up again. We assembled at the dining area and headed to a dark spot to try shooting the Milky Way. We waited in the dark, cold night and took shots after shots. But alas, it was too cloudy and the Milky Way was nowhere in sight. We ended the session at 3pm. As I caught glimpses of lightning across the horizon, I headed off to the parapet by the ocean in an attempt to catch some lightning shots. As I waited, droplets of rain started giving my head a good massage and off I dash back to my little cottage. I guess when you are in love, every minute spent was sweet, with or without any additional sweeteners. Haha :. Ended the shoot and off we went to a well-known Bak Kut Teh place to make up for the disappointing sunrise. We arrived at the eatery. It was a stand-alone restaurant in the middle of nowhere, filled with throngs of hungry, waiting customers. We went round and round in search of a table for the 7 of us. We finally got one, right at the back of the eatery. The Bak Kut Teh were simmered over a low fire using charcoal, and that was the unique selling point of this eatery and that was also the main reason for our 1 hour wait for our order. We were famished by the time we were being served our breakfast. We got back to our resort and I met up with my room mate, Iris. As we got into the room, I started to pack my stuffs, getting ready for check out. I got to the table and saw that my pastries were ripped apart. I had a shock of my life! Were there monkeys in our room? I yelled out to my roomie and her jaws dropped as well. We speculated that the culprits were more likely to be rats rather than monkeys. I have stayed in tons of budget hotels, motels, resorts etc, but had never once come across my food being ripped apart by rats. This was the first! I took this pic and threw out the pastries. It was an exasperating yet hilarious experience. We checked out and proceeded to head back to Singapore. On our way, we stopped at a Hindu Glass temple near Johor as well as had dinner before we got back SG. Though I did not get my Milky Way shot this time round, I made new friends, had lots of fun and had a great time walking down memory lane. Feet Firsts Gluttony Photography Travel. Sep 1.
