Derek Chauvin Stabbed in Prison: Former Officer in Critical Condition

Phoenix, AZ – Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted in the murder of George Floyd, was seriously injured in a prison assault on Wednesday. According to federal corrections officials, Chauvin was stabbed multiple times by another inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Tucson, Arizona, where he is serving a 22.5-year sentence.

The attack occurred in the prison's law library around 12:30 p.m. local time. Correctional officers intervened quickly, and Chauvin was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition. The assailant, whose identity has not been released, was immediately placed in solitary confinement.

Chauvin, 47, was convicted in April 2021 of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in the May 2020 killing of George Floyd, whose death sparked nationwide protests against police brutality and racial injustice. Since his incarceration, Chauvin has reportedly been a target of threats and violence due to the high-profile nature of his case.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons has launched an investigation into the incident, with early reports suggesting the attack was premeditated. Legal experts speculate that the assault could reignite debates about inmate safety, particularly for high-profile prisoners.

Chauvin’s attorney, William Mohrman, released a statement condemning the attack and calling for increased protection for his client. 'This was a preventable tragedy,' Mohrman said. 'The Bureau of Prisons has a duty to ensure the safety of all inmates, regardless of their crimes.'

Meanwhile, reactions to the news have been divided. Some advocates for criminal justice reform have pointed to the incident as evidence of systemic failures in prison safety, while others have expressed little sympathy, citing Chauvin’s role in Floyd’s death.

As the investigation continues, questions remain about how such an attack could occur in a federal facility. The Bureau of Prisons has yet to comment on whether security protocols were followed or if staffing shortages played a role.
