Purdue football has taken a turn for the worse. It’s almost as if with every game they play… they get worse. On the upside, with every game I work, I get better. The camera rig feels like home and I’m incredibly comfortable now.
This game was very exciting because I got to film the aircraft flyover. I was so excited for this because it was so huge, and my camera was going to be the one to catch the shot for the whole audience to see. When I seen the replay of it, I was a little disappointed with it cause it was not as smooth flowing as I would have liked it to be. I’m not trying to make excuses, but the camera is heavy and difficult to point upward when it is weighted down. I can just continue to work and improve my camera abilities. Everyone in the Hall of Music is very encouraging and this makes me want to work harder!
They have saved my footage from the past couple games and I hope to view that and see where I can improve. I’m looking forward to this basketball season and hope to get on the court a few times and operate a camera there.
Filming two losing games in a row is not easy. It feels like the majority of what I am shooting is images of the players with their heads down. I continued throughout the game to get shots that looked sad, but were really showing the morale of the game. For some reason, when we are losing, I really like doing crowd shots. It makes me happy! When a person sees their face on the scoreboard screen their faces light up. 15 seconds of fame, I guess.
During game four and some previous games I did not follow through on my “hero shots.” Today, Bobby told me (while shielding his face from a camera-cause he doesn’t like his picture taken) that I needed to follow through more. I needed to hold it up until about the start of the next play. I think I did a decent job of improving my “hero shots” during game five, but I’m still getting burned on trick plays. It’s so difficult to know when there’s a fake.
My goal for these next couple games is to continue to improve my “hero shots” and to not get burned.
Going to the Mackey Control Room feels natural now. I’ve only had a few hours under my belt, but I’m so comfortable and confident with the people I’m working with and the equipment I am using that I’m relaxed.
Marshall offense was filled with passing plays. This made the game more difficult to capture. I got burned a couple of times, and when that happens I get this sick feeling in my stomach. I’m thinking, “Oh, no, Scott’s gonna yell at me. He’s gonna yell at me!” He doesn’t though. He’s a really great director. I did get some good shots here and there, and Tim Todd informed that I could later use these for a demo reel. I had never thought about this, they used several of my shots for replay and that always makes me feel good, but the thought that my shots could actually land me a real job hadn’t occurred to me.
Tim later said, “Come basketball season we’re going to throw a camera on your shoulder, see how you do with that. That is, if you’re interested.” Oh! Man!! I am interested! This seems so surreal. I guess this really is how it works. You say yes to one job and that job will get you another job if you listen, work hard, and are willing to learn. If I do get to work for Hall of Music in the winter I’ll be getting paid! That’s legit work!
Tim told me after the game where he thinks I should improve for the next game. I need to zoom in on the officials after the extra point. Everything else I did was pretty good I just need to work better with not getting ahead of myself.
I’m so grateful to have this internship. It’s been very rewarding and the experience keeps getting better.
On Tuesday I asked a a fellow classmate if they would like to be a model for a practice photo shoot. I’ve really been working on my photography skills because I know that improving the way I see and capture a still image will improve my filming skills. I want my films/photography/art to have a beautiful style. I’m not seeking realism, but that border between how you typically look at something and how it has been taken to an extreme. Maybe you look at a girl fumbling through her purse and notice the emotion in her face, but for me it’s much more />interesting to capture the tension in her fingers as they search the small tote.
I really enjoy a photo that is just perfectly overexposed to light. I feel like it is something we rarely see with our own eyes, but is captured by the camera so well.
I really enjoy candid shots. When people don’t think they are being watched they truly expose who they are on the inside. In this picture she looks so impatient! :D I like it! It's almost like she is thinking, “Answer your phone!!”
This is my favorite picture. It’s a really tight close-up but it is a genuine smile. She looks absolutely authentic in this picture and that’s what I want to see in a shot.
I hope to take some more photos with her in the future. I would really like to go to a park or somewhere else in nature to get out of the concrete jungle and in an environment that is more tranquil.
I was super psyched to go to my second football game on the 2012 season. Deciding to intern with Elliot Hall of Music has been one of the best choices I have made in my college career and possibly my life. No other opportunity could have came along at this time that would have put me more directly in the work environment of a camera operator. This experience will only get better.
My second day began with meeting Tim Todd, and while this was prett cool nothing was exciting as meeting the Director, Scott. He was super laid back. I asked him if there was anything he wanted me to do this Saturday and he said, “Yeah, don’t text on your phone.” After that we laughed, joked, and I shut my phone off.
In the camera operators meeting with Scott I looked around and realized something: I’m the youngest one in the room. Sometimes I like to think I’m pretty old (21), but in this moment I felt so humbled to be there. The fact that I was operating a camera and not coiling a cord meant so much to me when I realized how big of a deal it was. I’m half the age of everone else and I’m getting the same experiences as them. :D
I was impressed with how much I improved with my skills on the camera. I only got yelled at a few times for my focus (that’s when I found the focus handle). I had no idea that I could use the handle of the camera rig to focus the video. I know this sounds really amateur, but I hadn’t noticed it. Now that I knew where my focus was I could zoom in and get some really cool shots.
Ever time I go I get better and better at this job. Can’t wait for the next game and I know that the director will be in for a treat. I felt like by the end of my second game I was working like a pro. I was turning over good video time after time, and for this next game I intend to do it for the whole game! :D
Looking back at my freshman year I can I remember saying, “I never want to work on live sports production.” Two years later, my view has completely changed. I was really excited when I received the opportunity to operate a camera for Elliot Hall of Music for the Purdue University football games. I knew it would be a great learning opportunity. I was already enrolled in the Big Ten Network class (where I help in the production of sports broadcasting), but I knew this was too sweet to pass up. The ability to capture players on camera takes a lot of skill, and it’s a skill that I want to have. My life goals and dreams haven’t changed to wanting to be a cam op for ESPN, but I know these skills will transfer over and help me to frame other shots on other projects.
When I watch a football game on television…I get bored! It was never exciting to me. I always felt like the camera work was amateurish and did not take much talent to produce. During my first day operating a camera for the Hall of Music I regretted ever thinking this. It is hard! The ability to keep the ball on screen and keep players in frame in a way that looks like it was planned is very difficult. I’ve made many short films, and I will shoot the same scene from 5+ different angles and choose my favorite one in post, but you CAN’T do this in live video production. A cam op has to get it right every time! There’s no room for mistakes!
I made mistakes though. I was complemented after the game. I got some “good jobs,” but what I liked hearing most was the advice. I love hearing when people like what I have done, but when I hear from someone,“ Hey, you did good, but next time do this_______,” I am so much more happy. I come away with a positive mindset and ambition to do better the next time.
My biggest mistake of my first game was while capturing a shot I would pull out to a wider shot instead of staying tight. The director really wanted the tight shots and I should have kept it tight. These tight shots are good for replays.
I can’t wait for the next game. I’m going to follow my instincts. Listen to the voice of my high school football coach in my mind, “follow the ball."
Here’s a pic I snapped while up in post. You know that part in the second Jurassic Park movie, "It’s a high hide..it get’s you high then you hide.” That’s where I was! Haha! :D

See, that’s what the app is perfect for.
Sounds perfect
