The Loose Women star is celebrating her weight loss by recreating a notorious beach bikini photo
Denise Welch might have turned 60 this summer but the Loose Women panellist sees no reason to start getting shy.
It is five years since she slimmed down to a size 12, and to celebrate she has recreated her least favourite pre-diet bikini shot, posting “then and now” photos online.
Now there isn’t a troll alive who can dent her body confidence.
“If it embarrasses my boys, I’ll definitely still be doing it when I’m 90,” she says.
The “it” in question? Baring all. And she doesn’t mean her soul.
She says: “I don’t care about the knockers – no pun intended. I’m not going to have anyone tell me that I can’t wear a bikini at 60. I’ve got a wobbly arse, my boobs aren’t in the right place.
“I’ve got bumps and lumps and a tummy and I’ve had two children. But I don’t look bad for an old bird.
“I’m proud of how I look at 60 and I’m not trying to look 30. That’s the message I’m trying to deliver. So if I’m still getting my kit off at 90, so be it. Sorry children.”
For years Denise medicated depression and anxiety with drugs and booze, only to then be consumed by a food addiction when she got sober in 2012.
But she shed 2st 4lb in nine weeks, and thanks to cognitive behavioural therapy kept the weight off. Her healthy outlook has made Denise, who once admitted snorting coke on the Corrie set, into a poster girl for middle-aged redemption.
She says: “A lot of people don’t like being 60 but I’m loving it because it’s better than being 50 or 40 for me.
“People think once they’re in their 50s they’ve made their bed and have to lie in it. That’s rubbish. I’ve turned my life around and if I can change, anyone can.”
Denise is speaking on a rare break from Calendar Girls, the Gary Barlow musical about the North Yorkshire Women’s Institute who posed nude for charity in 1998.
In the photoshoot scene Denise has a nude g-string and a tray of baked goods to protect her modesty. But she’s unflustered about getting her buns out. Sons, actor Louis, 17, and 1975 frontman Matty Healy, 29, aren’t exactly shocked. “The boys are totally and utterly beyond being embarrassed by me,” she says.
“Before Louis came to watch it, I said to him, ‘You know that mum strips off in this show?’. And he said, ‘What’s new?’.
“All I ask is that if anybody sees a bit more than they want to, please just stay seated and don’t run out of the theatre screaming.
“But if I inspire one person to put on their bikini and walk along the beach loud and proud, I’m happy.”
So happy in fact, Denise chooses this moment to burst into song.
Denise, who was married to actor Tim Healy for 24 years, got sober six years ago, when she and second husband Lincoln Townley, 45, decided to face their addictions together. Denise has just returned to Loose Women after a five-year break and loves still being busy at 60. She says: “I’ve got lots of work when many women are saying they feel invisible. I feel very visible.”
Being busy and sober have helped her battle her depression and anxiety. She still gets severe episodes – the last one lasted three days at Christmas.
But she says: “I will never have a drink again. My life, outside of my depressive episodes, is great now.
“Drink was a very negative influence in my life. I used to self medicate, living a life that was just not great.
“Face it – nobody has ever stood on a podium and said, ‘I would like to thank drink and drugs for where I am today’. I still have issues, but I deal with them in a sober way.”
Tynemouth-born Denise is eager to stress sobriety “does not cure depression”. She says: “I’ve gone to bed when everything is rosy and woken up with no change in circumstance and, bam, there it is. But being sober stops compounding it.”
Having changed her life she must have felt suckerpunched when Matty revealed a four-year heroin addiction?
The rocker checked into rehab last October but she insists: “I’m just proud of my children because they are following their dreams. They’re both doing brilliantly.”
Matty and Louis, who has landed a role in ITV’s Vera, know the pitfalls of fame. “They are under no illusion about the lack of glamour. They grew up around their dad and I on TV sets.”
When it comes to 66-year-old Tim and his wife Joan Anderton, who he wed in 2015, Denise says: “Lincoln and I have a great friendship with Tim and Joan. We live near each other, we spend Christmas together every year, it’s lovely.” And Denise is now looking to adding to their extended family, admitting: “I’m just looking forward to grandchildren.”
Her novel The Mother’s Bond focuses on adopted children, so would she think of taking in a little one with Lincoln?
Instead she’s focusing on saving lives. She lost weight using LighterLife, an eating plan that also uses CBT to tackle the emotional reasons for overeating.
And she now speaks to morbidly obese people, helping turn their lives around, and says: “Two people have reversed their Type 2 diabetes because of me.”
But she admits: “I know not to eat out of comfort, but I do still eat pies and fish and chips. I am a Geordie after all.”
