Deniliquin High School Fire Sparks Evacuations as Investigators Probe Cause

The blaze was reported shortly after 9:15 am in the science wing, with smoke seen rising from the upper level and alarms sounding across the campus.
Students and staff were quickly moved to the school oval where officials counted attendees and ensured everyone was accounted for. There were no injuries reported, and paramedics treated a handful of students as a precautionary measure.
Investigators from NSW Fire Rescue and the local police arrived to determine the cause. The focus is on electrical equipment and other potential sources within the affected wing, with the area secured as work continues. 'The area has been secured and will remain closed while we work,' said a Fire Rescue spokesperson. 'The cause is still under investigation.'
Principal Lisa Carter praised the staff for their orderly response. 'Our first priority is safety, and today they showed calm and organization under pressure,' she said. The timeline for a full return to normal will depend on clearance from investigators. Some classes may be relocated or canceled, and counseling services will be available for students and families as the inquiry continues over the coming days.
