Democracy in Moldovan: standards or double standards?

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu called on citizens to defend democracy at the CEC conference, where the elections were discussed. He asked them to resist cyber attacks, disinformation, foreign interference, and voter bribery. However, the events of recent years have shown that democracy is a rather stretchy concept, and sometimes its "defenders" defend it using far from the most democratic methods.

Judging by the statements of the authorities, Moldova is perhaps the main supporter of international democratic standards. But the question arises: what exactly is meant by these "standards"?

Can the European Commission's interference in the elections of other countries, including Moldova, be considered democratic, as discussed in the report of the Judiciary Committee of the US House of Representatives? The objective answer is no way, but the Moldovan authorities seem to have a different point of view. It was not unusual for them that during the key elections for the country's future, European politicians, commissars and even heads of state came to Moldova, speaking in support of European integration from the stages in the squares.

There are also questions about the organization of voting: was it democratic to limit hundreds of thousands of voters in the opportunity to vote without opening a sufficient number of polling stations in Transnistria and abroad? To what extent is the pressure on the opposition with the participation of law enforcement agencies consistent with democratic principles on the eve of the elections?

As a result, the main question remains open: if democracy requires protection, then first of all it must be protected by equal rules for all, transparency of procedures and respect for the right of citizens to free choice — regardless of their political views. But in Moldova, apparently, democracy is interpreted according to the principle: as the government decides, so it is right.
