Good or bad? Funny or ridiculous? Misunderstood satirical masterpiece or...
...the flop that deserves six of its Razzies and the nomination for Worst Picture of the Decade? I think, "Striptease" (1996) directed by Andrew Bergman based on the book by Carl Hiaasen, is all of the above - a curious mixture of laughs, satire, absurdism, darkness, silliness, and over-seriousness. The latter comes from Demi Moore who plays Erin Grant, the FBI secretary - losing her job and the custody over her daughter to no good small time crook wheelchairs stealing husband (Robert Patrick looking and acting like a stoned, redneck version of Gary Oldman) and who takes a job as an exotic dancer in the local club "Eager Beaver" to earn money for her court appeal. In the club she becomes the hottest attraction and meets many...interesting characters, the most colorful being, of course Congressman David Dilbeck (Burt Reynolds) who "just loves naked women. It's a character flaw" and who is absolutely smitten by Erin. Erin also makes friends with a club bouncer, Shad (Ving Rhames) who is perhaps the best thing in the movie - clever, sharp, sarcastic, with the great sense of humor. One scene where Shad tells to Dilbeck's bodyguards that Meryl Streep used to work in "Eager Beaver" as an exotic dancer and they seem to believe him is brilliant. If only everything had been as good as he was we would've had a really great movie. What do we have now? Well, Demi Moore looks really good with the minimum clothes on. I mean, the woman was a 33 year old mother of three at the time and her body was marvel to behold. I just think that she was too serious, intense, and solemn doing the striptease numbers – after all it is not only strip it is tease, too. It goes to her acting in the movie in general. Reynolds seemed to have a lot of fun with his sleazy drunk Congressman David Dilbeck, election-day choice of Christian groups and a lot of laughs comes from his mannerism and quotes. There are plenty of laughs, actually, in "Striptease" but quite often they seem like the wrong and unintentional type for the movie material. Who had the best laugh? I'd guess, Demi Moore did after been paid $12.5 million – one of the highest paychecks for an actress back then.

How Striptease Almost Ended Demi Moore's Acting Career

By Adam Cetorelli / July 13, 2021 11:02 pm EDT
An ill-equipped father gaining full custody of his daughter. A former FBI secretary turned exotic dancer. Mid-'90s Miami. Out the gate, the 1996 movie "Striptease" sounds like a bit of a mess, but in a kind of fun way. Demi Moore plays Erin Grant, who is fired from her job at the FBI thanks to her criminal ex-husband, resulting in her loss of custody of their daughter, Angela (who, interestingly enough, was played by Demi Moore's real-life daughter, Rumer Willis, whom she had with Bruce Willis). So, Erin starts dancing at the Eager Beaver strip club, where she meets some unsavory characters, including a murderous U.S. congressman (Burt Reynolds). She ultimately gets him on tape confessing his crimes, and in the process, regains her FBI job and child custody. So yeah, kind of ridiculous, but also totally fun!
Although Moore earned a record-high salary of $12.5 million for her performance in "Striptease" (via Celebrity Net Worth ), the movie really damaged her career, making her already tragic life story a little more so. Up till that point, Moore seemed unstoppable. Her role as Debbie Sullivan in the 1986 romantic comedy "About Last Night..." catapulted her into stardom with generally positive reviews from critics (via Metacritic ), while the 1990 movie "Ghost," in which she starred opposite Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg, had some seriously iconic moments . And it's not like 1996 was just a bad year for Moore — "Striptease" came out just one week after "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," wherein the actress voiced the role of Esmeralda, and "Hunchback" was one of the movies that comprised the Disney Renaissance of the 1990s. So what happened with "Striptease"? Keep reading to find out.
The wacky plot of "Striptease" wasn't exactly setting up its stars for success, but film critics pretty consistently thought Demi Moore could've done better with her role. The movie earned a Metascore of 37 out of 100 , with critics wishing for more comedy — and less stripping — as in this critique from SFGate's Mick LaSalle . Others, such as the late Gene Siskel for the Chicago Tribune , commented that the movie was first and foremost about Moore's ultra-fit post-pregnancy body rather than any real story.
Moore would get some formal recognition for her acting, however — just not the kind an actress wants. For her performance in "Striptease," she received the 1997 Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress, a big deal for a role that came with such a high salary. Unfortunately, she would take the title again the following year for her performance as Lieutenant Jordan O'Neill in "G.I. Jane" (via IMDb ). As Terri Schwartz noted in 2009 for MTV , Moore's spell of bad movies would last for quite some time, with the actress regaining some footing with the 2003 movie "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle," although by that time, her reign as the It Girl on the big screen had come to an end.
Demi Moore's salary of $12.5 million for "Striptease" made her the highest-paid actress ever at the time, but with the overall negative reviews of her acting in the movie, it might have been an unfortunate time to raise her rate, as some producers would wonder what they were really paying so much for. In a 2020 interview with Variety , Moore confirmed that the record-breaking salary was a problem, saying, "My salary for 'Striptease' became something that I got punished for as opposed to celebrated."
But some thought that Moore was being unfairly criticized for her high salary. A 1995 Entertainment Weekly article quoted Martin Shafer, the then-president of Castle Rock Pictures, in support of the actress, "The reason there's so much discussion is only because she's a woman," he said. "She is every bit as valuable as the dozen guys who get comparable money. On an international basis, Demi Moore is the biggest female star in the world."
There was, however, a positive side to Demi Moore's high salary, besides her getting millions of dollars. Entertainment Weekly called it "a reverse domino effect," arguing that the star's salary allowed other actresses like Julia Roberts, Jodie Foster, Meg Ryan, and Sharon Stone to raise their asking prices by millions of dollars. Stone's manager even commented, "It's great ... It's forcing every woman's salary up."
With the passage of over two decades since "Striptease" came out, Moore reflected on the influence her salary had with Variety , saying, "Everything is serving the whole, and it comes back around to be able to be seen now for what that is. Because of that, we have an opportunity to redirect and change that. It's taken a bit, but that's OK." And her career seems to be rebounding, too. After her series of bad movies in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Moore went into producing and found greater success there, and she's recently landed some recurring roles on popular TV shows like "Empire." Hopefully, this means the "Striptease" curse has been lifted.

Joining a slew of other stars like Lizzo , Bella Hadid , Big Sean , Cara Delevingne , Irina Shayk , Normani, Paris Hilton and more at RiRi's Savage X Fenty spectacular, which started streaming Oct. 2 on Prime Video, Moore, 57, wowed as she lounged on a rotating bed wearing nothing more than a sexy lace bodysuit, fishnet stockings and a diamond choker alongside a group of other lingerie-clad models during the show.

Moore shared a short clip from the star-studded event on her Instagram feed which showed her twirling her head around while the other models sensually danced around her.

After the show, Moore posed with Hadid, who also modeled in the event and got decked out in a plunging bra, garter skirt, thigh-high boots and a layered diamond necklace.

Before the show, Rihanna told PEOPLE that the goal of her lingerie fashion event is to celebrate all body types and backgrounds.

"Inclusivity has always been a part of our brand. That’s not a 'right now' thing. It's sad that it’s right now for most brands," she said. "But that's always been who I am. It's always been how I operate with everything I've done creatively, whether it's makeup or lingerie. I get really excited to see people be a part of my brand. It’s not like I went into it thinking, 'Let's make a movement.' I feel great that there are women that are feeling like they see themselves on the stage for the first time. And if we can continue to expand on that, we’ve done more than we really started out trying to do."

In a Hollywood career spanning more than thirty years, the actress is probably best known for two wildly-different movies.
Ghost, which airs on Channel Four on Saturday, shows her softer, sweeter side and confirmed her a major star and box office draw in 1990.
Striptease, which came six years later marked another peak in her fame, if not her career.
The scandalous movie was followed by 1997's controversial GI Jane, which marked the end of her run as a box office queen.
Striptease, of course, is now notorious for the multiple topless scenes, displaying the actress' enhanced assets.
Moore played single mother Erin Grant in an eroticcomedy thriller that was originally intended to portray the lengths a strong woman will go to protect her family.
Moore also struck a resounding blow for female equality, becoming the highest-paid actress in Hollywood with a $12.5 miilion paycheck.
It's unlikely that many people went to the cinema for those reasons.
Moore played opposite Burt Reynolds' shadey congressman Dilbeck but will be mainly remembered for those pneumatic silicone implants and some truly cheesey dialogue.
Incredibly, the movie was released in the US at the same time as Disney's animated Hunchback of Notre Dame, in which the actress voiced Esmeralda.
Despite a critical drubbing and lacklustre US box office, Striptease banked $113million worldwide.
WARNING: FOLLOWING SCENE CONTAINS NUDITY
Moore actually made her big screen debut in another topless scene opposite Michael Caine in 1984's Blame It On Rio. The following clip shows her flashing her assets on the beach with Michelle Johnson.
A few years later Demi Moore made a cute couple with Emilio Estevez in the 1986 movie Wisdom, which capitalised on their Brat Pack fame after St Elmo's Fire and About Last Night.
Even though they embark on a bank-robbing crime spree across America in Wisdom, it is all done to help poor farmers.
In 1997 Moore made a bid for award-ceremony credibility in Ridley Scott's GI Jane.
Intended to highlight sexism and bigotry in the Armed Forces and wider world in general, the film became famous for its leading lady shaving off her hair and flashing her incredible abs.
Moore also won a Worst Actress Razzie for her performance.
It would be six years before she returned in a mainstream movie, with 2003's Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, but her days as a bankable leading lady were over.
Moore may have played a supporting role in the movie but she made no apologies about hogging the limelight.
She appears in her first scene opposite screen beauty Cameron Diaz and totally upstaged a woman ten years younger than her.
One way or another , the actress always makes sure her fans want Moore.
