In today’s edition of “Huh. So This Is A Thing”: Cooking...with semen. Yes, you read that right. Semen, as in sperm-carrying human ejaculate, is, apparently, the next great ingredient for the adventurous chef. I’ll give you a moment to process this...OK. Bay-area cookbook author Paul "Fotie" Photenhauer has published two books about recipes that use semen . The first, Natural Harvest: A Collection of Semen-Based Recipes was released in 2008. (I almost wrote “came out in 2008,” but then that seemed too on-the-nose. Evidently, once you start writing about semen-cooking, everything starts sounding dirty.) The description on the back of the book explains,
Semen is not only nutritious, but it also has a wonderful texture and amazing cooking properties. Like fine wine and cheeses, the taste of semen is complex and dynamic. Semen is inexpensive to produce and is commonly available in many, if not most, homes and restaurants. Despite all of these positive qualities, semen remains neglected as a food.
Once you overcome any initial hesitation, you will be surprised to learn how wonderful semen is in the kitchen. Semen is an exciting ingredient that can give every dish you make an interesting twist. If you are a passionate cook and are not afraid to experiment with new ingredients -- you will love this cook book!
Photenhauer followed up Natural Harvest with Semenology: The Semen Bartender’s Handbook in 2013, because what semen-laced meal would be complete without a semen-y cocktail, right?
In an interview with SF Weekly , Photenhauer explains that he doesn’t put semen in all his food, saying, "For me, it's more of a fun twist to add to food … It adds a definite personal twist to it.” Anna Roth at SF Weekly spoke to an infectious disease specialist about the health implications of cooking with semen ; he explained that certain STIs, including HIV and CMV (a form of herpes), could be transmitted through raw semen, and added, “If the food is thoroughly cooked, well-cooked , to destroy any life forms in the semen, like any viruses... that would be my first concern.” Photenhauer suggests that people shouldn’t cook with the ejaculate of just anyone , remarking, "I would never eat or drink semen, cooked or otherwise, from someone I wouldn't be willing to have sex with." So, the more you know, right?
And on that note, here are some of Photenhauer’s recipes, for those of you who are...er, interested:
I’ll admit that these recipes make me shudder instinctively, but my general feeling on this is the same as with most sex stuff: If it’s happening between two consenting adults, then who am I to judge? But—again, as with other sexual situations—consent and knowledge are everything. Photenhauer insists to SF Weekly people should not serve these semen recipes to others without their knowledge, saying, "I'm against [people saying], 'Oh, I put semen in their margarita and they didn't know about it.' That's wrong. That's gross and that's wrong." AGREED.

And what's the deal with that pineapple rumor, anyway?
If you're reading this, it's because you're at least a little curious about what semen tastes like. And that's normal! In the course of a sex session that involves a penis, there are various ways for cum to enter mouth territory, whether it's spitting or swallowing after a blowjob or playing with bodily fluids, one of the most common sexual kinks among American adults. Whether you're wondering how your partner likes your own semen, or you're planning to get up close and personal with someone else's junk, we're here to help you learn more about the taste of semen.
It's not all sperm. In fact, sperm is a very small part of the milky fluid that comes out of your penis when you ejaculate.
"Semen is a combination of water, plasma, and mucus," says Jamin Brahmbhatt, MD, a urologist at Orlando Health and assistant professor at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine. The fluids in semen come from the testicles, seminal vesicles, prostate, and urethral glands.
Semen contains very small amounts of nutrients, including fructose, glucose, calcium, protein, Vitamin, C, and zinc, Brahmbhatt says. But don't believe the myth about semen being a good source of nutrition.
"The nutrients within semen are not sufficient for a daily diet," he warns. "There are a lot of online articles promoting semen as a source of protein. Stick to protein shakes, or other sources; the amount of protein in semen is negligible."
Scientists apparently have more pressing matters to study than the taste of semen. "There is no structured research looking at what semen should or does taste like," Brahmbhatt says. "Most of the information out there is based on shared personal experiences."
We searched "what does semen taste like?" on Reddit, and—not shockingly at all—found a bounty of answers from random internet users.
Some people have highlighted certain savory flavor notes. "A little salty, but also it's got this kind of umami to it?" one person wrote . "The fluid itself is very viscous and it'll kind of take over your whole palette once you've tasted it." Another Redditor described it as tasting "like a salty gun that just went off in your mouth," which inspired this response from someone else: "It's like a warm loogie."
But other people have said it doesn't have much of a taste at all. "I tried my own," one person volunteered . "It didn't really have a taste—a little bitter, but thats it." Another user said , "Kinda depends on the guy. I've had some that didn't taste like anything at all, besides a bit salty."
Normal semen is slightly alkaline, with a pH in the 7.2-8 range, according to Brahmbhatt. "Water, which is neither acidic nor alkaline, has a pH of 7," he explains. "So just by thinking of it this way, semen may taste just like water, which for the average person takes like nothing."
Remember, taste varies from person to person. "Some say semen tastes sweet, which could be due to the sugar content of semen," Brahmbhatt says. "Others have said semen tastes bitter, metallic, or sour, which could be based on individual taste buds or the alkaline nature of semen."
A person's perception of taste also depends on what they've recently eaten and how hydrated they are. "If you are dehydrated and just had onion rings then semen is likely going to taste different than when you are hydrated and just had a salad," Brahmbhatt says.
You might have heard the rumor that eating loads of pineapple can improve the taste of your cum . While there isn't any science to support the specific link between pineapple and sweeter semen, "we do know that diet can affect the taste and smell of your body fluids," Brahmbhatt says. "Extrapolating from this, you can hypothesize that the flavor of semen can be altered by diet."
Onion, garlic, asparagus, dairy products, certain meats, and certain fruits (including orange, papaya, and—yes—pineapple) are all known to change the taste and smell of your body fluids. "Depending on what you have eaten, the taste could theoretically be bitter or sweet," Brahmbhatt says. "It all depends on how your body metabolizes what you are eating. I tell my patients if something you eat gives you bad breath or gas, it's probably going to alter the tastes of your body fluids as well."
Your hydration level may also play a role in the taste of your semen. The more dehydrated you are, the thicker your cum is. "When the semen is concentrated, some of the taste may be more noticeable," Brahmbhatt explains.
The takeaway? Drinking lots of water and eating fruit won't suddenly make your semen taste like the most delicious thing on earth, but it might make a slight difference. And hey, putting healthy things into your body is never a bad thing.

Life can be a pretty stressful and uncertain journey even for the most positive people like myself; I’m a single mother to my two young children and have just turned twenty-nine with not so much as a hint of wedding bells on the horizon. We’re repeatedly faced with heartache, bad health and long working hours that undoubtedly take their toll on our bodies and as such supermarkets are packed full of pills, potions and remedies for waking us up and then helping us back to sleep again, numbing us from aches and pains and taking preventative measures towards allergies from our homes and the toxic lifestyles that we lead. But do we really know what goes into the cosmetics, foods and cleaning products that we use everyday and the shockingly negative side effects it has on our health?
Following the birth of my second child I struggled with sleepless nights, low self esteem and a rollercoaster of hormones which had me bursting into tears one moment and then smiling the next. Looking back I always felt better after having sex, or most precisely – having semen, which is possibly down to the fact that semen is natures antidepressant. A study by students at the University of New York found that female students who had intercourse without using a condom i.e. absorbed the semen into their blood stream showed fewer signs of depression than those who had no direct contact with semen.
I’ve been vegetarian since the age of five and turned vegan almost three years ago and pretty soon after I noticed a big drop in my energy levels. I constantly felt tired, could hear my heartbeat in my ear, got out of breath doing simple exercises and felt faint when turning corners too fast for which a blood test diagnosed me as anaemic due to my choice of diet. After much research online I came across semen as a natural supplement to help to target anaemia and depression thanks to its high vitamin and mineral content with a single teaspoon containing over two hundred proteins (our bodies building blocks which strengthen and repair hair, skin, nails, tissue and bones), minerals and vitamin C (essential for supporting the immune system, lowering blood pressure, preventing cancer and strokes and improving skin elasticity), vitamin E, vitamin B12 (combatting tiredness and assisting red blood cells), calcium (for strong teeth and bones as well as heart and muscle function), chlorine, citric acid, fructose, potassium (supporting the heart and kidneys, the nervous system and metabolism), lactic acid, nitrogen, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium and zinc (an antioxidant to fight the signs of ageing).
I’m A Vegan Personal Trainer & Nutrition Advisor Using Semen As A Daily Supplement
This year I qualified as a personal trainer and nutrition advisor and now understand the importance of maintaining a healthy balanced lifestyle as I supplement my vegan diet daily with the aim to live longer, feel stronger and take care of my health both now and in the future rather than being skinny and malnourished or yo-yo dieting and putting myself at risk of diabetes, cancer and disease. I’ve found that I’m noticeably more perky and happy when I’ve consumed semen its natural ingredient melatonin is an antidepressant which also helps to induce sleep and relaxation. Perhaps not as well known is that oral sex assists in lowering blood pressure and reduces the risk of prostrate cancer in men with each ejaculation so there are undeniably health benefits for men and women alike in producing and consuming semen. But it’s the taboos of society that I feel are holding people back from trying or even admitting to already drinking semen. Yet we can all do with upping our vitamin intake, reducing the amount of daily stress we put upon ourselves and improving our diet and lifestyle without additional processed foods and pills. When I eat and live well I have far more energy, am more active well into the evening, sleep better, have a more positive mood and outlook throughout my day and fend off and prevent sickness more effectively. I drink a protein shake every morning before going to the gym and thanks to my friend kindly donating his semen to me I now have a naturally healthy dose of natural vitamins and minerals that I can add to it too. My children have had several sickness bugs, coughs and sneezes between them this term just like the hundreds of others at their school because of the changing of the seasons, yet I’ve managed to stay fighting fit throughout which I attribute to my strong immune system.
Being single I haven’t got constant access to semen from a sexual partner but it’s something that I would hope to find one day and could certainly benefit from in a relationship. As my focus is on raising my two children alone I have very little free time to myself and haven’t been on a date in almost a year – which ended up as a great friendship. I’ve made peace with being single now, I’m independent, hard-working and don’t rely on or ask anything of anybody – what will be will be and I’d rather remain single and happy than settle for the wrong relationship for fear of being alone. Currently I already use my friends semen as a facial beauty treatment to soothe my rosacea which is a skin complaint that runs in my family. Before consuming the tubs of semen that he drops off to me a few times a week for my facials I thought I should first check that he was ok with me now drinking it rather than just using it as a face mask. I suppose when you’ve already breeched the subject of using a friends semen as part of a beauty regime then it’s not as surprising to ask their permission to drink it too and thankfully he was fi
