(10 marks) THE AFGHAN GIRL The world was amazed by Sharbat Gula’s beautiful … green eyes when she first appeared on the cover of National Geographic magazine. She was photographed in 1985 at the age of thirteen by journalist Steve McCurry. She lived in Afghanistan and was forced to leave her home in Afghanistan during the war with the USA. For many people she symbolized the war. Nobody knew who she was for a long time. The journalist tried to find her during the 90s, but he couldn’t. In 2002 a team from National Geographic looked for her. A few women said they were Sharbat, and a few men said they were her husband! They finally found the real Sharbat later that year. Her identity was confirmed using technology which matched her eyes to the eyes in the photo. Sharbat was photographed again and her story was published in the April 2002 magazine. A television documentary was made about her life, and a charity was set up by National Geographic with the aim of educating under-sixteen-year-olds in Afghanistan. 1 Sharbat isn’t very good-looking. 2 Steve first took her photo in the nineties. 3 Sharbat hasn’t lived in Afghanistan all her life. 4 People found Sharbat seventeen years later. 5 The magazine helps adults in Sharbat’s home country.
