“Hentai is brilliant,” reads the title of a recent Guardian article about a British game show contestant who won a round with the word “hentai.” But what does “hentai” actually mean, and how has that meaning changed? Let’s dive into the word’s etymology!
The Oxford Dictionary defines “hentai” as “A subgenre of the Japanese genres of manga and anime, characterized by overtly sexualized characters and sexually explicit images and plots.” The origin of the word in English is given as “1990s Japanese, literally ‘abnormal, perverted.’”
The first Japanese character (変) in the word hentai (変態) literally means “strange” or “curious” (変), while the second kanji character (態) means “state” or “condition.”
Today in Japanese, the word does refer to people who are perverted or abnormal (as noted by the character Hentai Kamen , above), but that isn’t the only definition. Hentai also means “metamorphosis,” as in the complete changes insects make into their adult form.
Today, Samsung unveiled everything new in its lineup of Galaxy products. Bundle a pair of Buds 2 Pro with either a Watch5 or Watch5 Pro with the Z Fold4 to receive $300 in Samsung credit.
As Kotobank notes, before that, during the 18th century for example, hentai was also used to note when the condition of things, such as the moon, for example, looked different.
During the early 20th century, the term hentai seiyoku (変態性欲) or “sexual perversion” was coined with seiyoku (性欲) meaning “sexual desire.” However, hentai seiyoku was shortened simply to “hentai” in colloquial speech due to Japanese speakers’ preference to shorten long words. The term hentai then began to take on a new, sexual meaning. One early example dates from 1931 when the modernist writer Riichi Yokomitsu used “hentai” in relation to collecting a woman’s personal artifacts.
This definition continues. In contemporary Japanese, as website Takashionary explains, saying that someone has a “hentai hobby” (変態な趣味 or hentaina shumi ) means that the interest is sexual in nature and abnormal.
The word hentai, it seems, also became the basis of the Japanese slang ecchi (エッチ), which is the Japanese pronunciation of the letter “H.” However, during the Meiji Period (1868-1912), the slang term ecchi apparently referred to the “h” in the world “husband.” However, in the decades that followed, it appears ecchi began to refer to the “h” in “hentai.” The term ecchi came into wider colloquial use by the mid-1950s, and by the 1980s, the slang “ecchi suru” (to have sex) was in use.
Writer and game translator Matt Alt points to a thread by Yoshihiro Watanabe , a producer at Studio Orange. Watanabe explains that the term “hentai” isn’t used in Japan to refer to a specific anime or manga genre.

The word “hentai” itself means abnormality or perversion and can be used to describe a person who exhibits those tendencies. It’s since become used as the catchall term for adult anime, even though the term “hentai” is actually used more outside of Japan than inside. There, terms like “ero-anime” or “AV” (“adult video”) are used to describe adult animation.

Another term used within Japan is “ecchi,” the Japanese pronunciation of the letter H, itself a slang contraction for “hentai.” Ecchi can refer to anything sexual, but can also be used to describe anime , manga , or other products that have a frankly sexual bent.

The first genuinely adult animated productions released in Japan are believed to be feature-length films from manga creator Osamu Tezuka’s studio Mushi Pro: Cleopatra, Queen of Sex (1970) and One Thousand and One Arabian Nights (1969) . By today’s standards they are tame, but at the time they were provocative stuff―especially to Western audiences for whom the idea of adult-themed animation was still a total novelty.

The current incarnation of hentai emerged with the advent of home video in Japan in the 1980s, where titles like Urotsukidoji and Cream Lemon (which are still extreme by today’s standards) found audiences and were eventually sold outside Japan as well. Many titles like, which are more risqué than explicit, have crossed over and found something like mainstream success with the larger body of anime fans.

Most of the hentai video market is in the hands of a few specialty distributors, such as Critical Mass and Kitty Media, who offer a range of current and previously-issued hentai titles. Some of these distributors have online streaming portals as well.

Some distributors also offer anime-themed computer games also aimed at adult audiences, typically written for Windows-based PC. These games have a name of their own: erogé , a Japanese contraction of the words erotic games . Some erogé serve as the inspiration for hentai anime titles as well (e.g., Bible Black .)

The most immediate way to identify any hentai title is to check for a warning on the package: “For Adults Only,” “ Absolutely Not For Children ,” or something to that effect.

Since some hentai titles may not have names or artwork that openly tip them off as hentai, it helps to pay attention to the packaging for an age notice.

Queen Henti, a Hittite queen, was the wife of King Suppiluliuma I and assumed her role as Tawananna after the King's mother Daduhepa died. Henti bore five sons to Suppiluliuma: Arnuwanda II, Telipinu, Piyassili, Mursili II, and Zannanza. Two of her sons succeeded to the throne, Arnuwanda and Mursili II.
She is often called the 'disappearing Queen' as she vanished shortly before Suppiluliuma's diplomatically beneficial marriage to the Babylonian Princess Mal-Nikal (Malnigal), who succeeded her as Queen and Tawananna. A common theory behind this is that Henti was banished in order for her husband to secure an alliance with Babylonia's King Burna-Buriash II.This is not unlikely as Suppiluliuma is famed for having overthrown his brother Tudhaliya III (the Younger) for the throne.
In fiction, Queen Henti is also a character in the historical fiction manga Red River.
