The Grizzlies are showing interest in Kevin Durant and have made “new inquiries” on the Nets‘ star forward, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. As Charania writes within his round-up of the latest Durant-related rumors from around the NBA, the Grizzlies could include up to five first-round picks in a package for the two-time Finals MVP (their own 2023, 2025, 2027, and 2029 selections, plus Golden State’s top-four protected 2024 pick). The team also has a bevy of young talent on its roster beyond star guard Ja Morant, including Jaren Jackson Jr., Desmond Bane, Ziaire Williams, Brandon Clarke, Kennedy Chandler and David Roddy. However, according to Charania, Memphis hasn’t appeared inclined to offer Jackson or Bane in a deal for Durant, preferring to build an offer around their draft picks. Given that the Nets are reportedly seeking a win-now return for Durant, that sort of offer is unlikely to pique their interest, even if the picks are unprotected — those first-rounders may have to be rerouted to a third team that could send Brooklyn the kind of impact players the team is seeking. While the Grizzlies are an intriguing new suitor for Durant, there are still a number of other teams in the mix. The Celtics, Raptors and Heat remain among the most significant threats to land the 33-year-old, Charania says, though Toronto has continued to resist including Scottie Barnes and Miami has “yet to seriously engage” in any discussions involving Bam Adebayo. Boston, meanwhile, has been unwilling to include Marcus Smart or Robert Williams in addition to Jaylen Brown, Charania says. The Suns also remain involved, offering up Mikal Bridges and a series of draft picks, according to Charania, but they appear to be behind those Eastern teams among Durant’s most serious suitors. Charania identifies the Sixers, Bucks, Nuggets and Pelicans as some of the other teams that have expressed interest in Durant, though he confirms that New Orleans deemed Brandon Ingram untouchable. According to Charania, the Hawks also made an offer for Durant, putting John Collins, De’Andre Hunter and a draft pick on the table. The details of that pick are unclear, but Atlanta could trade its own 2023 and 2029 first-rounders or Sacramento’s lottery-protected 2024 pick. Although Charania doesn’t specify exactly how the Nets felt about the Hawks’ offer, he says none of Brooklyn’s discussions have gained any serious traction. There are still five weeks before training camps get underway, which could be a fraught week for the Nets, assuming Durant remains on the roster — it’s unclear whether or not he’ll show up to camp if his trade request hasn’t been granted.
After struggling to get just one victory against the Chicago Cubs over the weekend, the Milwaukee Brewers are set to open a three-game road series against a team they apparently have a better chance against. The Brewers will face the major-league-best Los Angeles Dodgers (84-36) in the series opener Monday night after losing two of three at Chicago. And if the upcoming series sounds like more of a challenge than one against the far-under-.500 Cubs, it was just last week that the Brewers gave the Dodgers fits in a four-game set at Milwaukee. Yardbarker Quick Pick The Dodgers are the second-best team against the spread in baseball, and Julio Urias is 6-0 with a 2.03 ERA in seven starts, which is why we're taking Los Angeles -1.5 (-114) on the runline. Yes, the Dodgers only beat the Brewers by more than a run once last week, but they're 43-15 at home, and just shelled NL Cy Young favorite Sandy Alcantra on Sunday. — Jared Shlensky, Yardbarker Odds via OddsChecker: Click here for LIVE updates 10:10 p.m. ET Milwaukee Brewers: +1.5 (+105) spread, +220 moneyline, over 7.5 (-118) Los Angeles Dodgers: -1.5 (-114) spread, -250 moneyline, under 7.5 (+100) Looking for the best sportsbook offers? Despite playing even with the Dodgers so far, the Brewers have yet to get on track overall after making roster adjustments at the Aug. 2 trade deadline. Closer Josh Hader was traded to the San Diego Padres, and while Milwaukee received a talented package of players in return, new closer Devin Williams has two losses and a blown save since taking over the role. The Brewers are just 7-10 since the trade deadline and sit off the pace in the National League Central, as well as in the NL wild-card chase. Betting on Brewers-Dodgers? In an attempt to win consecutive games for just the second time this month, the Brewers will send left-hander Eric Lauer (8-5, 3.58 ERA) to the mound. Lauer gave up just two runs and four hits over seven innings against the Dodgers on Wednesday, but the Brewers still fell 2-1. Since his days with the Padres, Lauer has found success against Los Angeles, going 6-1 with a 2.56 ERA over 10 starts. The Dodgers will counter on Monday with left-hander Julio Urias (13-6, 2.40), who went five scoreless innings against the Brewers on Monday in a 4-0 Los Angeles victory. Over his past 11 starts, Urias is 10-0 with a 1.99 ERA as he has lined himself up as the team's likely No. 1 starter when the playoffs arrive. In seven career starts against the Brewers, Urias is 5-1 with a 2.01 ERA. With Walker Buehler done for the season with an elbow injury and Clayton Kershaw in and out of the rotation with back issues, Urias has stepped up after a somewhat bumpy start to the season when he was 3-6 but still had a 2.80 ERA after 12 starts. While Dodgers starters Tony Gonsolin and Tyler Anderson are having impressive seasons, Urias has a postseason track record. He has 22 appearances (five starts) over five separate postseasons and 11 total series, going 7-3 with a 3.52 ERA. "He's been a constant for us," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Urias. "That's what he's become." Urias has not only allowed one run or less 14 times in 23 starts, he has a 2.05 ERA since the start of June. "The more I throw, the more I feel like I find little things that work for me," Urias said through an interpreter. The Dodgers are on a nine-game home winning streak after a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins that was capped by a 10-3 victory Sunday. Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy hit home runs, while Will Smith had three RBIs for the Dodgers, who are 16-3 in August. Looking for the best sportsbook offers? Check out our free bets page
Patrick Cantlay successfully defended his title at the BMW Championship and moved into prime position to defend his FedEx Cup championship, as well. Cantlay shot a final-round, 2-under 69 Sunday to beat Scott Stallings by one shot at Wilmington (Del.) Country Club in the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The 2,000 FedEx Cup points that came with Cantlay's victory pushed him up five spots to second in the standings. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler regained the points lead and will begin next week's Tour Championship with a two-shot lead over Cantlay. Cantlay, who won the BMW last year on his way to claiming the FedEx Cup, became the first player in the 16-year history of the format to win the same playoff event in back-to-back years. Cantlay carded a four-day score of 14-under 270. Stallings shot 69 Sunday and held at least a share of the lead for much of the afternoon before Cantlay passed him with a birdie at No. 17. After Stallings missed a birdie try at the last hole, Cantlay stuck a wedge shot inside 6 feet of the pin at No. 17 to set up an easy birdie that proved the difference. "I hit a lot of solid shots and then I got a couple good breaks," Cantlay said. "Obviously on 17, that break is something I'm not expecting and it was really big for me to take advantage of it. I played a lot of great golf this week and I'm happy to come out of here with a win." Scheffler (70) tied for third with Xander Schauffele (71) at 11 under. K.H. Lee (65) of South Korea, Corey Conners (69) of Canada and Adam Scott (71) of Australia tied for fifth at 10 under. Cantlay began the day with a one-shot lead over Stallings and Schauffele, but he posted a quiet front nine with one birdie and one bogey. Stallings capitalized, tying him at 12 under and holding the outright lead when he birdied the par-4 11th and Cantlay bogeyed the par-4 10th behind him. But Stallings had an unfortunate three-putt bogey from the fringe at the par-3 13th. He bounced back with a birdie at the next hole and parred his way home to get in at 13 under. Stallings, 37, came up short of earning his first win on tour since January 2014. He was happy to settle for his first-ever trip to the Tour Championship. "Super excited the way that (caddie John Yarbrough) and I kind of handled ourselves and knew what we were doing with coming down the stretch, and excited for next week for sure," Stallings said. "But we're definitely going to celebrate tonight." Only the top 30 players in FedEx Cup points qualified for the Tour Championship. Aaron Wise shot a 2-over 73 Sunday to finish 7 under and yet managed to grab the 30th and final spot. Ireland's Shane Lowry (8-under 276) was the first man out at No. 31. Stallings jumped from 46th place to 12th with his performance at the BMW. Lee, who tied Norway's Viktor Hovland for the round of the day with his seven-birdie round of 65, moved from 33rd to 26th. And Scott, 42, tied for fifth for the second week in a row to sneak inside the cutoff line, from 45th to 29th.
Tempers flared Sunday afternoon between the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays after starting pitcher Alek Manoah plunked slugger Aaron Judge with a pitch in the fifth inning. Yankees' starting pitcher Gerrit Cole, who wasn't pitching on Sunday, showed his displeasure by storming out of the dugout toward Manoah. After the game, Manoah had a response for Cole. "I think if Gerrit wants to do something, he can walk past the Audi sign next time," Manoah said, referencing the advertisement painted on the grass in front of the first-base line at Yankee Stadium. Manoah said he's struggled to throw his sinker over his last five or six starts, adding he thought Judge understood he didn't intend to hit him. Cole told reporters he "wasn't sure" if Manoah had hit Judge on purpose. He explained his actions by saying, "Aaron got hit, and we'd been dusted several times." For those wondering, the Yankees and Blue Jays will meet again before the end of the regular season. New York will travel north to Toronto for a three-game set beginning Sept. 26. There's also a chance the two clubs could face off in the postseason. The Yankees continue to sit atop the AL East with a 74-48 record. Meanwhile, the Jays' are tied with the Tampa Bay Rays for the top AL wildcard spot with a record of 65-55.
Kevin Durant and Ja Morant? The pairing could be a reality if the Memphis Grizzlies are able to turn their reported interest in the Brooklyn Nets star into an official trade. The Athletic reported Monday that Durant's latest, and perhaps strongest, suitor is Memphis, which can underpin any offer with multiple draft picks. Until Monday, the Boston Celtics had been rumored to be the frontrunner for Durant with the Philadelphia 76ers reportedly interested and many others on the "monitoring with interest" list. Per the report, the Grizzlies aren't inclined to part with Jaren Jackson Jr. or Desmond Bane to acquire Durant but would be open to swapping any and all of their draft picks. Memphis also owns a protected first-round pick from the Golden State Warriors in 2024. Establishing the appropriate value for Durant, beyond his four-year, $198 million extension that begins this season, has been a challenge, according to The Athletic. The Nets are reportedly asking for more than the Minnesota Timberwolves gave up for Rudy Gobert, sending five players and five draft picks to the Utah Jazz. Durant, 33, demanded a trade on the eve of free agency and doubled down this month with a request to ownership that the Nets make a change at general manager and head coach or set Durant free. Nets owner Joe Tsai subsequently appeared to back his staff over the player. "Our front office and coaching staff have my support," Tsai said. "We will make decisions in the best interest of the Brooklyn Nets." The Toronto Raptors, Miami Heat and Celtics were reportedly the most serious players in the Durant sweepstakes in July. A two-time NBA Finals MVP and four-time scoring champion, Durant joined Brooklyn as a free agent in 2019 alongside Kyrie Irving. Durant averaged 29.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 6.4 assists in 55 games this past season with the Nets, who traded fellow All-Star James Harden to the Philadelphia 76ers in a blockbuster deal involving Ben Simmons. Irving, a seven-time All-Star, picked up his $36.5 million option, though the Nets are said to be willing to listen to trade offers. Durant, the 2013-14 league MVP, has career averages of 27.2 points, 7.1 rebounds and 4.3 assists in 939 games with the Seattle SuperSonics/Oklahoma City Thunder (2007-16), Warriors (2016-19) and
