A prosecutor says a Southern California man killed his wife, then propped her body on a sofa in front of their children as they opened Christmas presents
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- A Southern California man who killed his wife propped up her body on a sofa, told their children she was drunk and had them open Christmas presents in front of her body, a prosecutor told jurors at his murder trial.
“This Christmas story does not have a happy ending, and unfortunately this is not just a story, it is real life,” Heather Brown, senior deputy district attorney in Orange County, said Monday as trial began for William Wallace of Anaheim, the Orange County Register reported.
Za'Zell Preston, 26, was taking college classes in hopes of becoming a domestic violence counselor when she was killed in 2011 by a man who already had served jail time for beating her, the paper said.
The couple had gone to a neighbor's Christmas Eve party and a neighbor described hearing an argument later that night, Brown said.
Wallace told a member of Preston's family that “we were drinking and during the argument I tossed her around a bit,” the prosecutor said.
Brown said the next morning, Wallace dragged his wife's body from the bedroom to the living room couch, placed sunglasses on her and told the children: “Mommy ruined Christmas, she got drunk and ruined Christmas.”
Preston was slumped over on the couch when paramedics arrived. She left a newborn son and two daughters, who were then 3 and 8 years old.
Wallace's attorney argued that Preston died from injuries after she drunkenly tripped and fell into a glass table, shattering it.
“Mr. Wallace is being accused of something that is not his fault,” Heather Moorhead told jurors. “You will hear about a relationship that was full of arguing and yelling, but also a lot of love.”
Wallace, 39, could face up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted of first-degree murder.

Rachel, Max, and their daughter Ellie had the perfect life—until the night Rachel’s heart stopped beating. She was thirty-six. Just as her family can’t forget her, Rachel can’t quite let go of them either. Caught in a place between worlds, Rachel watches helplessly as she begins to fade from their lives. This fresh debut novel touches on the various stages of bereavement, from denial to acceptance. As Max and Ellie work through their grief, Rachel too struggles to come to terms with her death. And as her husband starts to date again, Rachel realizes that one day Max will find love, and that Ellie will have a new mother figure in her life. The Dead Wife’s Handbook is a heartwarming and touching book, very commercial in its approach and a compelling read. It will touch a wide readership, and is a perfect read for fans of the bestseller The Lovely Bones . Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.
"An intriguing tale of love after death and an insightful look at the bereavement process from both sides of the grave . . . This is a touching, honest story of death." — Kirkus Reviews

I thought the book was such a cute concept. I haven't read anything that had the main character start out dead and even though she can see everyone they do not sense her and in most stories at least one person can see or feel the person who is dead. I liked the originality of how the main character was written and portrayed.

Loved this book! Told in the first person, Rachel's story doesn't conform to my personal afterlife beliefs, but I've always hoped I'd be able to look at family or friends left behind and see how they were doing. Although Rachel narrates what she sees, the author does a wonderful job of allowing you to see what husband, daughter, mom, and best friend are going through after Rachel's death, and how they get through it. It addresses tough issues, such as how Rachel's husband manages to keep moving through his day, trying to keep the routines intact for Ellie; how friends and relatives start pushing him to date again after only a year; how Rachel's mom, who has already lost her husband, copes with the unthinkable: having your child die before you. It's not maudlin, though there are parts that stab a mother's heart. It's not sugar coated, and Rachel is not perfect, even in the afterlife. I found it hard to put down long enough to drive home after caring for my granddaughter one evening, and found myself wishing I had it on tape or something, since reading while driving is not recommended! I may even read this one again.

A cleverly written narrative. I enjoyed the opportunity to consider life from a somewhat different perspective. More a diary than a handbook, the narrator offers insight into the stages of death as experienced by the dead. Certainly not a mundane, done to death view. A little slow at times but it did keep my interest. It was a worthwhile read.

A cross between self help book and chicklit. That's no mean feat. Story told from POV of young dead woman. She goes through - and watches her left-behind family and friends go through all the stages of grief. Although most of the characters are a tad too good to be true, it's still a very good and recommendable book.

Easy, well-written, enjoyable vacation read with a nice predictable ending. Not at all macabre. I would have enjoyed it more had there been more use of humor and a bit more suspense. Overall though, thought-provoking and a gentle reminder to make the most of every day.

If you have lost a treasured friend or family member and wonder if they could be watching over you, this story is for you. A tale spun after a young mothers tragic passing and how she sneaks peeks on her family & friends over the years following. Truly a nice read with a happy ending. Also fun to read some English sayings & dialects. Enjoy!

This book is an emotional roller coaster. There are no bad guys and no twist in the tail but it held me from beginning to end. The writing is well done and the feelings the story inspires will stay with you.

A really good read

I decided – somewhat selfishly – to read The Dead Wife’s Handbook. I have a mountain of review books waiting for me to bust my way through but I have been desperate to read this book since I bought it many moons ago. I’m really glad that I took the time to do so because it is wonderful. Admittedly, I didn’t quite find my groove with The Dead wife’s Handbooks as quickly or as easily as I normally do with books, however, once I did it was a hard one to put down. Beckerman explores the theme of loss and death in an unusual way. She tells the whole story from the perspective of a dead person – some writers have done this before however I found that the way Beckerman approached the concept to be quite unique. Whereas it is usually those that are left behind after the death of a loved one that go through the stages of grief, Beckerman positions her protagonist Rachel – the recently deceased – as the person going through that process. What Beckerman manages to do rather successfully is make you ache with longing for the character. We know from the get go that Rachel cannot have the happy ending that is the norm for a leading character and when we see people infringing on her life and taking over where she left off we get incensed as much as Rachel does. Then we are hit with the opposing feeling of longing for her husband Max – is he supposed to spend his whole life in mourning? And what about Rachel’s daughter, Ellie? How is someone so young meant to cope with the crappy hand that life has dealt her? Seriously, you go through so many emotions reading The Dead Wife’s Handbook that it is hard to work out how you are meant to feel and that is a credit to Beckerman’s writing. In what could be mistaken for a sad miserable story (based on basic knowledge of the content) comes a rather wonderful and strangely uplifting story about death. The Dead Wife’s Handbook by Hannah Beckerman is available now. You can follow Hannah Beckerman (@hannahbeckerman) on Twitter.

I stumbled across this book on a blog recommendation via Twitter, and I'm so glad I did. First of all, the cover is beautiful! In terms of the story, I found it incredibly emotional. There were sections where I had tears in my eyes - a very rare thing for me when it comes to books. True, some of the storyline felt predictable but it's so well written and I liked how it use the five stages of grief to relate to the deceased (Rachel) instead of just the bureved. The characters were very well drawn out, and all totally identifiable. I particularly liked Ellie. At just seven years old she sounded more like an adult and thoroughly convincing. In summary, it's not a cheery read, but it's a damned good one and highly recommended.

This Book is completely different to any other book I’ve ever read. I loved it from chapter one to the last chapter. It opened my eyes to so many things and how the Author can make the story come alive. I think the characters in the story handled everything perfectly and I wouldn’t have changed a thing I cried I laughed and I felt a part of this family I was reading about A brilliant book by my best author A best to read.so I say go get your copy now already...what you waiting for

Really enjoyed this speaking as someone who is a believer in life after death. If you are not then this may not be for you. I particularly liked how each chapter was titled after the different stages of grieving. It was very cleverly done I thought as seen from the perspective of the person who has died and is being allowed to have glimpses of how their loved ones are coping which is quite heart breaking at times. The really clever part is that while initially you think the story is about the husband and daughter's grieving process, you come to realise that it is actually more about the dead wife's journey through each stage of grief and how she has to come to terms with letting them go before she can move on.

Heartwarming, yet heartbreaking. A beautiful read.

This was very hard to read at times, me being a wife and a mother of 2 young children, but that does not mean I did not absolutely love every minute spent with these characters. I loved how they were so real and vivid. I really went on a journey with Rachel, sharing her feelings about events she had just witnessed. And I desperately felt for her all the way through, crying lots at the end.
