In the first half of 2023, web3 and DeFi projects, lost about $479.4 million worth of cryptocurrencies and assets to hacks, exploits and other malicious activities.

According to the report, the cryptocurrency ecosystem's protocols, platforms, and users have suffered nearly 400 major hacks in the past six months. Exploits and hacks were spread across the web3 landscape, with DeFi accounting for the majority of incidents.

PeckShield reported about $419 million in lost digital assets as a result of 386 hacks or exploits of DeFi providers and platforms. Attackers attacked more than 10 public blockchains, with Ethereum taking the brunt of the impact. According to PeckShield, projects on Ethereum lost more than $287 million.

The top three leading attacks on web3 projects included DeFi lender Euler Finance ($197 million), wallet provider Atomic Wallet ($65 million) and low-carb-crusader ($25 million).

While the amount of stolen funds nearly reached $500 million in the first half of 2023, it pales in comparison to last year's infamous Hacktober, when attackers stole more than $3 billion in a single month, Binance.
