It contains Day Nurse capsules and Night Nurse capsules, which are suitable for adults and teenagers aged 16 years and over
Both types of capsule contain paracetamol with a medicine that reduces coughing. The day capsules also contain a decongestant, while the night capsules also contain an antihistamine that dries up a runny nose and helps you sleep.
Day nurse capsules contain only paracetamol, pholcodine and pseudoephedrine. These are non-drowsy so help you continue with your day to day activities.
Night nurse capsules contain paracetamol and dextromethorphan, together with promethazine which makes you drowsy, which can help you get a restful sleep.
Day nurse and Night nurse are also available separately.
Day and Night Nurse capsules are used to relieve the symptoms of colds and flu, including a tickly dry cough, runny nose, fever, headache, aches and pains and sore throats.

Paracetamol is a painkiller that can relieve mild to moderate aches and pains associated with colds and flu. Paracetamol also works to bring down a fever and this stops you feeling hot or shivery.
Dextromethorphan and pholcodine are cough suppressant medicines, used to stop a dry, tickly, unproductive cough (where you don't cough up phlegm). It works by reducing the nerve signals sent from a part of the brain called the coughing centre, to the muscles that produce coughing. This helps stop an annoying or painful cough.
Pseudoephedrine in the Day Nurse capsules is a decongestant. It relieves a blocked nose by causing the blood vessels in the linings of the nasal passages and sinuses to contract and narrow. This reduces the feeling of congestion and the production of mucus.
Promethazine in the night nurse capsules is a sedating antihistamine that dries nasal secretions through its antihistamine action. This can help reduce a runny nose and relieve coughs caused by mucus tickling the back of the throat. It also helps you get a restful sleep as it has a mild sedative effect.

Is it safe to take Day & Night Nurse when you're pregnant?
Day & Night Nurse is not usually recommended for use by women who are pregnant, because the safety of dextromethorphan and promethazine in pregnancy has not been established. If you're pregnant or think you could be, get advice from your doctor, pharmacist or midwife on how best to treat your symptoms.
Is it safe to take Day & Night Nurse while you're breastfeeding?
Day & Night Nurse is best avoided by mothers who are breastfeeding, because it's not known if dextromethorphan or pholcodine passes into breast milk and promethazine does get into breast milk. There is a risk that it may cause sedation, irritability or excitement in a new-born baby.
Small amounts of pseudoephedrine pass into breast milk. The amount is probably too small to be harmful to a nursing infant, however, decongestants such as pseudoephedrine can temporarily decrease the production of breast milk
Ask your doctor, pharmacist or midwife for advice on how best to treat your symptoms if you're breastfeeding.

Can I take Day & Night Nurse with other medicines?
If you're already taking any other medicines, check with your pharmacist before taking Day & Night Nurse, to make sure that the combination is safe.
Don't take Day & Night Nurse capsules with any other medicines that contain paracetamol or an antihistamine. Many over-the-counter painkillers and cold and flu remedies contain these ingredients.
It's important to check the ingredients of any medicines you buy without a prescription before taking them with Day & Night Nurse or ask your pharmacist for advice. Using more than one medicine with the same (or similar) active ingredients at the same time could lead to you exceeding the maximum dose or having a higher risk of side effects.
There may be an increased risk of a rare but potentially serious side-effect known as the 'serotonin syndrome' if Night Nurse is taken by people taking any of the following medicines:

The facts about sleep deprivation and your health
You are more likely to experience side-effects such as dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation or difficulty passing urine if you take Night Nurse with any of the following medicines:
If you take paracetamol in the hour before or the six hours after taking colestyramine, the paracetamol is likely to be less effective. This is because colestyramine reduces the absorption of paracetamol from the gut. You should avoid taking Night Nurse one hour before or six hours after taking colestyramine.
Metoclopramide and domperidone speed up the absorption of paracetamol from the gut, making it start to work quicker.
Using paracetamol or paracetamol containing products such as Day & Night Nurse long-term may potentially increase the anti-blood-clotting effect of warfarin, leading to an increased risk of bleeding. Day & Night Nurse should only be used for the short period to relief the symptoms of cold or flu.
Avoid taking Day Nurse capsules if you're taking any of the following medicines because the combination may increase your blood pressure:
If you're taking medicines for high blood pressure you shouldn't take Day Nurse capsules as well, because the pseudoephedrine may make your blood pressure medicine less effective.
