After an adult film actor in California unknowingly infected two men with HIV because the virus went undetected by lab tests, a new report by the Center for Disease Control calls for greater preventative measures.
The 25-year-old male was diagnosed with HIV just 22 days after he first tested negative. During this time, he had unprotected sex with a total of 12 male performers, and five other men outside of work.
The CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report published on Friday, stated: 'Adult film performers and production companies...should be aware that testing alone is not sufficient to prevent HIV transmission.'
The report comes just before a California state board will hold a vote on February 18 to decide whether condoms should be required on set.

The 25-year-old was infected with HIV by a partner outside of work in 2014. Because it can take up to 10 days before the virus can be detected, his tests came back negative.
Ten days later, he had a rash, fever and sore throat. The symptoms lasted six days, and it took another six days before lab tests came back positive.
During this time, he transmitted the virus to two of his 17 partners.
California, home to the multibillion-dollar porn industry, has long been embroiled in a controversial debate over safe sex practices on set.
In addition to the February 18 vote, the California Safer Sex in the Adult Film Industry Act will appear on ballots in November.
The law would force producers to cover the cost of testing, vaccinations and monitoring. It would also allow any resident in the state to sue if the regulations are not being enforced.
Michael Weinstein, president of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, said the law would have a positive trickle-down effect.
He said: 'Porn is the primary means of sex education that young people get, and it's had a very negative impact on the promotion of safer sex.'
Because it can take up to 10 days before the virus can be detected the CDC warned: 'Adult film performers and production companies...should be aware that testing alone is not sufficient to prevent HIV transmission='
The porn industry disagrees, arguing that its own regulatory system of testing actors every 14 days is sufficient.
Actors are supposed to turn up on set with their results, and co-stars can refuse to work with an individual if they failed to get tested, or if the results came back positive for STIs.
Many actors have spoken up against the mandatory use of condom. They say because filming can last for hours on end, this form of protection can cause uncomfortable chafing or friction burns for both men and women.
In 2004, when two porn stars contracted HIV, most of the major production companies agreed to shut down for 60 days to prevent the virus from spreading.
Eric Paul Leue, the executive director of the Free Speech Coalition which represents pornography producers, said that biweekly HIV tests have successfully prevented outbreaks in more than a decade.
Instead of condoms, he supports the widespread use of a prophylactic drug called Truvada that can lower the risks for HIV-negative porn actors.
The CDC report notes that these drugs have to be taken daily, making regulations even more difficult.
A California state board will hold a vote on February 18 to decide whether condoms should be required on set. The porn industry argues that its own regulatory system of testing actors every 14 days is sufficient

Pornosec is a division of the Ministry of Truth in George Orwell’s novel ‘1984.’
This department is responsible for making and sending out “the lowest kind of pornography” for the Proles. The material goes out in “sealed packets,” and no party member is allowed to look at it. Later in the novel, it’s revealed that Pornosec is staffed entirely by women. This suggests that the Party believes that men are even less trustworthy to work in this area than women.
Pornosec is a department in the Ministry of Truth . They produce pornographic materials.
The people who work there have pristine records with the Party, like Julia. When speaking about her, the narrator notes that she had always “borne an excellent character.” This is suggestive of the type of person that was allowed to work there. They had to be as trustworthy as possible and as incorruptible. Julia was, of course, far from either.
Pornosec was mentioned three times in 1984. The first time occurs on page 55 when Winston is loosely referring to the different sections in the Ministry of Truth. Pornosec is one of those sections. It is, in Orwell’s own words:
engaged in producing the lowest kind of pornography, which was sent out in sealed packets and which no Party member, other than those who worked on it, was permitted to look at.
This is a great example of how the lives of Party members, or at least Outer Party members, are controlled. It’s unknown how much access to material like this that Inner Party members have. But, it’s likely that they have privileges that the lower members do not.
The Party does not trust the Outer Party members’ ability to control their sexual urges, and pornography will not help. The Party is only interested in power, and it does not allow them to have their citizens focus on something other than the Party’s best interests. This is why, as the novel proves, the Party focuses people’s passions on defeating the enemy and loving Big Brother .
The Junior Anti-Sex League is another great example of how the Party tries to control the “sexual urge” in everyday people. This group advocates for the complete irradiation of sex and for the use of other forms of reproduction.
Julia, Winston learns, was chosen to work in Pornosec. He gives a brief description of what he learned about the department from her:
been picked out to work in Pornosec, the sub-section of the Fiction Department which turned out cheap pornography for distribution among the proles. It was nicknamed Muck House by the people who worked in it, she remarked. There she had remained for a year, helping to produce booklets in sealed packets with titles like ‘Spanking Stories’ or ‘One Night in a Girls’ School’, to be bought furtively by proletarian youths who were under the impression that they were buying something illegal.
Winston is interested in her work, and she describes the books as “ghostly rubbish” and notes that there are only “six plots” but:
they swap them round a bit. Of course I was only on the kaleidoscopes. I was never in the Rewrite Squad. I’m not literary, dear—not even enough for that.’
Julia was chosen to work in the department because of her perceived purity. But, as Winston learns, she is far from that. He also learns from her that everyone working in Pornosec is a woman:
He learned with astonishment that all the workers in Pornosec, except the heads of the departments, were girls. The theory was that men, whose sex instincts were less controllable than those of women, were in greater danger of being corrupted by the filth they handled. ‘They don’t even like having married women there,’ she added. Girls are always supposed to be so pure. Here’s one who isn’t, anyway.
Pornosec is a department in the Ministry of Truth. It is responsible for creating cheap pornography for the Proles. Winston refers to the department with an amount of amazement. It’s only mentioned briefly in the novel.
Julia reveals that only women work in Pornosec and that the Party prefers to pick unmarried women to work there, feeling they are the hardest to corrupt.
Julia’s job while working at Pornosec was “helping to produce booklets in sealed packets.” These had the most basic of stories. Her job mainly was manual labor. She said she was not part of the “Rewrite Squad” and was not “literary.”

Linda Lovelace is a pornographic actress who had instant success with the 1972 film 'Deep Throat.'

As the star of one of the first full-feature pornographic film, Deep Throat , Linda Lovelace became a household name in the 1970s. But there was reportedly a dark story behind her fame. She was often abused by her mother growing up, and her first husband forced her into porn. Once the industry’s biggest star, Lovelace later stood up against porn, testifying about its dangers before Congress. She died on April 22, 2002, in Denver, Colorado.
Linda Lovelace was born Linda Susan Boreman in New York City on January 10, 1949. As the star of the first full-length pornographic film, Deep Throat , Lovelace became a household name in the United States in the 1970s. But there was reportedly a dark story behind her fame; she was often abused by her mother growing up, according to an article in the Boston Globe .
In her early twenties, Lovelace began dating Chuck Traynor. She married him in part to escape her family, but ended up in an even more harrowing situation. Traynor reportedly forced her into doing pornography. She later claimed that he controlled every aspect of her life and threatened her with bodily harm if she did not perform or tried to leave him. Traynor denied her charges.
Her most well-known film, Deep Throat , was released in 1972 and took the nation by storm. Lovelace starred with Harry Reems, a seasoned porn actor. The thin plot revolved around a woman who goes to see a doctor to sort out her sexual frustration. Unlike other porn films of the time, it tried to incorporate humor alongside the sexual aspects of the film. Despite its triple X rating, it became popular with mainstream audiences and eventually earned around $600 million. Not bad for a film that cost $25,000 to make. But Lovelace reportedly saw no money from Deep Throat and said that her husband received around $1,250 for the project.
With its numerous graphic sex scenes, Deep Throat stirred up a national debate on obscenity. Several diverse groups, including the Nixon administration, Christian leaders and feminist activists, protested against the film and the porn industry itself. There were police raids of movie theaters across the country often with the film’s print being seized by the authorities. Fines were also levied against some projectionists. While Lovelace faced no legal challenges, she was subpoenaed to testify in one of many court cases against its “obscene” content in 1973. A Supreme Court ruling that same year led to a crackdown on hardcore pornography, but all of the outcry about Deep Throat only generated more interest in the film and spurred ticket sales.
Not long after Deep Throat , Lovelace left Traynor and tried to launch a career as an actress. But her notoriety did not translate into any substantial legitimate roles. She did an R-rated sequel, Deep Throat Part II (1974), and starred in Linda Lovelace for President (1975), which was rated X, but both were box office duds.
While Lovelace was frustrated professionally, she found some personal happiness around this time. She married Larry Marchiano, and he was by her side as she told her story in Ordeal (1980), which provided details about her abusive relationship with Traynor. In the book, Lovelace said that Traynor kept as a prisoner and that he forced to perform obscene sex acts often by pointing a gun at her as a form of intimidation. He also made her have sex with other men for money, according to her book.
Once the porn industry’s biggest star, Lovelace stood up against pornography, testifying about its dangers before Congress and in other venues. She also shared her hellish experiences in numerous forums, including the book Out of Bondage (1986). But financially she and her young family struggled. Marchiano had been unemployed for a time and had a number of low-paying jobs. Her health also suffered. Lovelace needed a new liver after hers was damaged by hepatitis that she may have contracted from a 1970 blood transfusion, according to an article in the Los Angeles Times . She received a transplant in 1987.
In 1990, Lovelace and her family moved to Denver, Colorado. The couple split in 1996, but she stayed in the area and worked locally. She also began appearing at memorabilia shows and received a warm welcome from fans, according to The New York Times . Lovelace died in Denver, Colorado, on April 22, 2002, of injuries sustained in a car accident on April 3 of that year. Her ex-husband and their two children were by her side when she was taken off life support.
Today, Lovelace is credited by many as pornography's most famous star, as well as one of the most respected performers in the industry. A film about Lovelace's life and career, entitled Lovelace and starring Amanda Seyfried as the famous porn star, was released in 2013. Directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman teamed up for the film, which focuses on Lovelace's life from age 20 to 32 and is based on the screenplay by Andy Bellin.
