Way back in 1990, when no one outside the English departments at Princeton and Yale knew who he was, Duchovny starred in a movie called "Julia Has Two Lovers." He played a creepy dude who called women he selected randomly from the phone book and pleasured himself during the conversations. On a related note, in the "X-Files" TV series, Fox Mulder had very little actual sex, but it is widely known that the character had a major porn addiction. In at least one episode he gets turned on watching a tape of a Bigfoot sighting.
In 1991 Duchovny co-starred with Mimi Rogers in "The Rapture." He played Randy (Randy!), a man of questionable ethics who is into seriously kinky sex. During the second half of the film, Randy finds religion, makes an honest woman out of Mimi's character and fathers a child before getting blown away by a disgruntled former employee.
In 1992 Duchovny began a long stint as narrator of "Red Shoe Diaries," a Showtime series that involved anonymous women who answered newspaper personals ads by describing their sordid sex lives in vivid detail.
On "The Larry Sanders Show" Duchovny had a few guest-starring stints playing "himself," a character who repeatedly demonstrates his infatuation with Larry.
Duchovny starred in 2002's "Full Frontal." I'm not too familiar with the movie's plot, but the title says it all.
On a 2003 episode of "Sex and the City" Duchovny guest-starred as Jeremy, an old flame of Carrie's who tries to rekindle the romance. But their renewed relationship is hindered by the fact that Jeremy resides in a mental institution. Was Jeremy there because he was a sex addict? It's unclear, but looking back -- knowing what we know now -- it does seem to be a distinct possibility.

The sexual tension between their characters Fox Mulder and Dana Scully is almost legendary.
And on Wednesday night's episode of The X Files, the romance between the characters - played by between Gillian Anderson , 49, and David Duchovny, 57 - finally culminated in a largely suggestive sex scene.
'[And Then The Had Sex]. Twice. [SMUG EMOJI],' tweeted Anderson during the episode's debut.
Anticipated: On Wednesday's episode of The X Files, the fictional romance between Gillian Anderson, 49, and David Duchovny, 57, finally culminated in a largely suggestive sex scene
In the episode, fans who had followed the on-again off-again romance of the paranormal activity-investigating FBI agents were rewarded for nearly 25 years of waiting, with a sexy shot of the coworkers in bed together.
Anderson marked the occasion with her Tweet and attached to it a vintage GIF of Mulder and Scully clinking beer bottles together.
And a promo for next week's episode includes a flashback shot of an earlier 'near-kiss' for the hapless couple.

Cheers to that: Anderson marked the occasion with her Tweet and attached to it a vintage GIF of Mulder and Scully clinking beer bottles together
The teaser for upcoming episode The Lost Art Of Forehead Sweat features an iconic shot of a Season 4 episode in which a Mulder impersonator leans in for a kiss with Scully - before the real Mulder bursts in the door.
But in a bizarre twist, a different character has been edited in to replace Duchovny - who then fires a gun at our heroes.
The surreal preview for what looks like a more comical than usual episode of the iconic Fox TV series promises 'answers to everything.'

The reception for the latest season of the sci-fi series has been mixed.
Fans of the show lashed out in anger over the plot twist in its premiere.
The sci-fi show returned for its 11th season this year.
But after just one episode, fans have taken to Twitter to criticize the story line, with one going as far as saying they felt 'violated'.
Still going: The sci-fi show returned for its 11th season this year
The plot twist involved the origins of Scully's son William, long assumed to have been fathered by Duchovny's character Mulder.
However, the premiere ended with the mysterious Cigarette Smoking Man telling FBI Assistant Director that he had impregnated Scully using 'alien science' in order to create 'the first superhuman child.'
A flashback then links to a previous episode in season seven where Scully accuses the Cigarette Smoking Man of drugging her.
He tells Skinner that Scully's son William is in fact his and not Mulder's.
NOOOOOO: Fans of the show lashed out in anger over the plot twist in its premiere
