Aku is the female protagonist of the series Maou-sama, Retry! .

Her appearance has been described as androgynous, Aku has long bangs, with a portion of it covering left side of her face. She was born with heterochromia in her eyes, one red and one green.

Aku can be described as pure and fragile, due to her horrible life before meeting Kunai. Also somewhat stupid, as she constantly calls Kunai "demon lord" in public despite the fact it draws attention; she knows his full name.

Because of her heterochromia, she was even more of a bullying target. Her parents died from disease at an early age, and this only spurred the persecution of the whole village.

She was forced to do the disgusting tasks in the village such as getting rid of trash and human waste, however she didn't complain as she just wanted to be helpful.

Cast out of here village as a human sacrifice to the Devil King Greol , Aku runs afoul of the monster in the forest and is pursued. While running through the trees, she enters a clearing and encounters a mysterious man clad entirely in black and warns him to flee, but the dark figure easily destroys the demon with the toss of a single knife. Terrified that he was able to defeat a high-ranking devil, Aku pleads for her life. The stranger dismisses her fears as unnecessary before introducing himself as Hakuto Kunai , to which she obliges by giving her own name. He begins asking her questions, but due to her upbringing, she has limited knowledge of the world at large. Aku tells him a bit about her village before explaining that they are in the Kingdom of Holy Light , a theocratic state ruled by the church who worships the three great angels. Seeing her dirty and unkempt appearance, he recommends she wash herself in the lake. As water is a valuable resource in Eastern Holy Light, she enjoys the luxury of a bath, but remains wary of her savior. She spies him opening a void and grows fearful, but he uses it to produce soap and a towel for her use, causing Aku to wonder how he was able to obtain luxuries reserved for nobles.

Aku returns from her bath and refers to Kunai as "Demon Lord", but he decides not to correct her. During the ensuing conversation, Aku explains that the being he destroyed was a powerful Devil King who was sealed away in the Shrine of Wishes. The so-called Demon Lord then requests that she bring him to the shrine, and upon seeing her injured leg, offers her a ride on his back. She protests, not wanting to get her filth on him, but he remains adamant, causing her to break down in tears over his perceived kindness. Aku reveals she was an orphan whom the other villagers viewed as cursed and was forced by the other villagers to clean human waste before being chosen as a human sacrifice to Greol. He lifts her onto his back by force, assuring her that the person she calls "Demon Lord" would never be tainted by her touch. On the way to the shrine, she explains that it has the power to grant wishes. Upon reaching their destination, Kunai whiffs the scent of death coming from within and advises her to stay outside, entering the cave alone.

The Demon Lord returns minutes later and questions whether or not there are any large cities nearby. She confirms this before asking if they could stop by her village first. Knowing she will not be welcomed back, she pleads with him to take her along on his journey, to which he agrees. While returning to her house, she is accosted by several villagers who belittle her existence while admonishing her for returning when she was slated to be a human sacrifice. Aku falls on the ground, but is promptly rescued by Kunai, who angrily burns down the house of one of her attackers before fleeing the village with her on his back. As the unlikely duo makes their escape, she questions his motives for arson, then laughs at his half-baked excuses. The Demon Lord notes this is the first time he saw her smile.

After traveling for some time, the Demon Lord creates a Base for their shelter. She is amazed by his ability to craft buildings out of thin air and questions whether it is magic, but he denies this, only claiming that nothing is impossible for the Grand Empire . She views the sleeping cots, oil drum bath, and sturdy structure as the epitome of luxury; expressing confusion when Kunai implies he was capable of creating something greater. While his talk of modern amenities confuses her, she enjoys the luxury of a hot bath immensely before joining him in bed.

Personal Belongings: Soap (Grand Empire Brand) The soaps in this world are things made from natural manufacturing methods and ingredients, but because the people like nobles, rich, and prostitutes buy them at high prices, it rarely circulates to the general populace. The ‘Grand Empire’ brand soap of the highly advanced power nation that ruled over most of the world has incredible techniques used in the making of it, and it has so much of a difference that it would be stupid to even compare the two of them.

Personal Belongings: Bath Towel (Grand Empire Brand) The Grand Empire showed vulgar levels of pickiness and craftsman ability in many fields, and even a bath towel had many quirks placed in it. This bath towel had such a softness that people would even say: ‘They used fabric softener on it, right?’, and its absorption had no rival.

Armor: Cloth Clothing Nonexistent defense. However, since she was going to be sacrificed to the Devil King, she was made to wear clothes that in the standards of the village could be said to be great. There’s cases where the poor would wear things made from hemp.

Ashi was the deuteragonist (Though in the series as a whole, Aku could fill this role, while Ashi shares the role of tritagonist with the Scottsman and The Emperor. She was also originally quaternary antagonist before becoming an ally of Samurai Jack in Season 5) of Samurai Jack . She was the former leader and the only confirmed living member of the Daughters of Aku, seven sisters who served as assassins attempting to kill Jack. It is only later that she came to have doubts about Aku's true nature after Jack saves her life and she makes a full turn-around when Jack shows her the destruction Aku has unleashed on the world.

She served as Jack's most important ally in Season 5, in Episode XCIX she and Jack eventually fall in love with each other.
