It all started in 2005 when Becca, who originally hails from Connecticut, was studying abroad in London. She had come to England to experience a foreign city and meet new and interesting people. Finding the man she would eventually marry was not high on her list. After several months of enjoying British life, touring Europe and generally having a great time, Becca found herself out one night with friends at The Loop, a London Bar off of Oxford Street.
Also at The Loop that night was Ben, a Brit through and through. Ben was living in London, having grown up in the English countryside on his family's farm. He had moved to the city to live the life of a swinging British bachelor. Well, he was British and a bachelor. The swinging part is up for debate.
DRINKS, DANCING AND SMOKE MACHINES.
Having purchased a bottle of The Loop's finest cheap wine, Ben was heading back to his friends, when, through the haze of a smoke machine, he spotted Becca. Ben sauntered over and noticing that Becca was American, introduced himself in his most charming British accent. Becca, who has a keen eye for bollocks, saw through the posh act immediately.
Always the consummate salesperson, Ben didn't back down, and with the aid of his charming smile and winning accent, pitched himself like nobody's business. No one knows exactly what transpired, but eventually, Ben's annoying persistence wore Becca down. The pair began a whirlwind romance that spanned the next six months.
After extending her stay to spend more time with Ben, the time finally came for Becca to return to the States. Two days before she was set to leave, Ben took Becca to a champagne bar at the top of Tower 42, named "Vertigo". It was here, atop one of London's tallest buildings, that Ben proposed and produced the smallest diamond on record with what little funds he could pull together. Becca, of course, said yes.
The next ten months were hard for Becca and Ben, who were now on different sides of the Atlantic. They traveled back and forth to see each other every six weeks. Eventually, Ben was accepted into a Master's program in New York City and was able to move to the States. This still meant frequent travel, as Becca was at University in Connecticut for a further three years.

All the back and forth finally paid off when Becca and Ben were married on New Year’s Eve 2008/2009. In 2018 they had a beautiful son named Theodore (Teddy, as of print) who brings them both a tremendous amount of joy to this day. Sadly, Becca and Ben separated after 17 years together in 2022. They remain close and will always celebrate that chapter of their lives by time spent with Teddy.

People are all completely different, and assuming that there are set traits that will determine how people from each nationality will act is a mistake. While it’s true that there are some ‘typical’ ways for British men to act, and some ‘typical’ ways for Jamaican men to act (stereotypes at least), and while there are some cultural differences, it is important to remember that a nationality does not define their personality and they will be just as varied as men from America (who are also of course all one nationality but all act completely differently). Dating a British man can be completely different depending on which British men you are dating, so any advice here might not necessarily apply with your guy.
That said, here we will look at some of the cultural differences and common features that are relevant when dating British men.
Many women from the US are attracted to British men for their accents which a lot of women find to be a very sophisticated sounding voice. This then is a perk of dating British men, but it might also mean that your guy gets a lot of attention on nights out as people – including other women – are constantly excited to find someone British in their midsts.
This has another implication though which is the language barrier. Bear in mind that there are some differences in the English and American vocabulary. Words like ‘pants’ which actually only refer to underwear (rather than trousers) in England. None of these differences though are serious enough to cause any major confusions or offence and will mostly just be a source of amusement.
If your British guy was raised in England or still lives there, then he will likely have some particularly British traits. For instance you are likely to find that your guy enjoys football (soccer) a lot, and this might be something he gets very passionate about. He will also very likely in this case have a fondness for British pubs, and for certain lagers. Almost every British guy is also very fond of cups of tea (more so than coffee).
In terms of personality you are likely to find that English guys are much more reserved than American guys, particularly if they are from the South. They are less likely to start conversations with strangers, and less likely to applaud in the cinema or join in games that involve performance of any kind. Likewise they’ll be less likely to voice their grievances or to talk about their emotions at all – keep your true feelings inside and to keep your interactions with strangers as brief and polite exchanges rather than making any meaningful conversation. This can be frustrating or pleasant for women depending on what you’re looking for.
Another aspect of British men that’s different in a lot of cases is their sense of humour. You can witness this simply by watching an American sitcom and then an English one. The British comedy tends to be more sarcastic, cynical and based on situation. You can expect a British guy to have a sense of humour that is much more quiet and ‘dry’ rather than involving hand gestures or impersonations. At first this can make your guy seem a little bland, but if you look for a wicked and dry sense of humour then it is probably there under the radar.
As mentioned, the average British bloke will love to go down the pub and thus much of their cuisine comes from that pass time. Things like pie and chips, cottage pie, fish and chips, roast dinners, full English breakfasts and barbecues (chips meaning fries, not crisps).

Do you realise that there's a difference between "Britain/Britain" and "England/English"? You used the two words as though they are interchangeable! A lot of British men, especially Scots and Welsh, would find that offensive.

1. Yes, everything does sound better in a English accent. Their pronunciation of the word ‘darling’ is totally swoon-worthy.
2. There will be some verbal miscommunication and it will be hilarious. Because, seriously, who knew that pants means underwear across the pond?
3. You’ll want to steal all of his jumpers (sweaters). I don’t know if British guys have more sweaters than most American guys or what the deal is. All I know is that they seem to have an abundance of soft, over-sized sweaters that you’ll want to keep forever.
4. English Pubs take day-drinking to a whole new level. Not to mention the drinking age is 18 over there so they’ve been at it much longer than you have.
5. British politeness is not just a stereotype. They could bump into a tree and will still quickly apologize.
6. Admittedly weird American things such as a carousel in the mall will seem completely alien to them. “ I don’t understand it. It’s like having a driving range at the dentist office.”
7. Also, very normal American things will be fascinating to them. Be prepared to stop and look at parking meters for close to 10 minutes. THEY’RE JUST PARKING METERS CAN WE PLEASE MOVE ON?
8. It’s not all sunshine and roses. Kim Quidlan put it best in her Thought Catalog article 7 Overlooked Benefits of Being in a Long-Distance Relationship when she stated, “You spend so much time talking. So. Much. Time. You miss them all day, all the time. It’s like a dull ache that you can actually feel physically.”
9. You should probably brush up on your knowledge of American sports. Good luck explaining football to your confused boyfriend when you barely know what’s going on yourself.
10. You will learn to love Skype dates. Watching a movie together on Skype can even be almost as good as the real thing!
11. Tea will always be their first love. I kid you not, it is treated as a religion over there. Eight cups of tea a day isn’t seen as a problem.
12. You’re going to hear, “You’re soooo lucky you have a British boyfriend,” from everyone you meet. And although you may feel incredibly lucky to have an amazing boyfriend, living on different continents is not all it’s cracked up to be.
13. Dealing with the time difference won’t be as bad as you think. You’ll memorize the exact number of hours they are ahead of you. It’s especially easy if you happen to be dating an insomniac.
14. Hearing them pronounce words will be forever entertaining. A few of the best are squirrel, mocha, aluminum, and strawberry. You will not be disappointed.
15. They do not find your attempt at a British accent as cute and endearing as you may think. Because in reality you sound like a chimney sweep right out of Mary Poppins. However, that won’t stop you from slowly incorporating some of their slang into your everyday vocabulary. After a few months you might even be calling your friends your mates and complaining about the annoying adverts on television.
16. There will be endless conversation because you both grew up in different cultures. Your eyes will be opened to a whole new array of TV shows, music, and books!
17. PDA is basically out of the question due to their British politeness. So if you want more than just a peck on the cheek in public than you may want to look elsewhere for a boyfriend.
