Das Mittelalter behandelte den Bauern lange Zeit mit Verachtung, als wollte es ihn nicht bemerken. Wandmalereien und Buchillustrationen des 13.-14. Jahrhunderts. Bauern werden selten dargestellt. Aber wenn Künstler sie zeichnen, dann müssen sie am Werk sein. Die Bauern sind sauber, ordentlich gekleidet; ihre Gesichter ähneln eher den dünnen, blassen Gesichtern von Mönchen; In einer Reihe aufgereiht schwingen die Bauern elegant ihre Hacken oder Dreschflegel, um Getreide zu dreschen. Das sind natürlich keine echten Bauern mit von der ständigen Arbeit in der Luft verwitterten Gesichtern und ungeschickten Fingern, sondern ihre Symbole, die dem Auge gefallen. Die europäische Malerei bemerkt ab etwa 1500 einen echten Bauern: Albrecht Dürer und Pieter Brueghel (auch "Der Bauer" genannt) beginnen, die Bauern so darzustellen, wie sie sind: mit groben, halb tierischen Gesichtern, gekleidet in lächerlichen Baggy-Outfits. Die Lieblingshandlung von Brueghel und Dürer sind Bauerntänze, wild, ähnlich wie Bärentrampling. Natürlich steckt viel Spott und Verachtung in diesen Zeichnungen und Stichen, aber es steckt noch etwas anderes dahinter. Der Charme der Energie und der ungeheuren Vitalität, die von den Bauern ausging, konnte die Künstler nicht gleichgültig lassen. eine glänzende Gesellschaft von Rittern, Professoren und Künstlern: Die Sprache der Bauern wird nicht nur von Narren gesprochen, die das Publikum amüsieren, sondern auch von Schriftstellern und Predigern. Mit dem Abschied vom Mittelalter zeigte uns die europäische Kultur zum letzten Mal einen Bauern, der bei der Arbeit überhaupt nicht verbogen war - in den Zeichnungen von Albrecht Dürer sehen wir tanzende, heimlich miteinander redende Bauern und bewaffnete Bauern.

Als die heiße Mittelmeersonne allmählich unterzugehen begann und die weißen Kalksteinwände der Häuser ihren blendenden Glanz verloren, tauchten Menschengruppen auf den Straßen der Stadt auf. Sie gingen alle zum Kommunalpalast, einem kleinen Gebäude, in dem sich die Stadtbehörden trafen. Die ehrwürdigen Ältesten der vornehmsten Familien nahmen ihre gewohnten Plätze auf den Steinbänken in der Halle ein, die direkt zum Marktplatz führte. Eine Menge Neugieriger hatte sich bereits versammelt: Hier sollte bald eine Sitzung des Gemeindegerichts beginnen.
Das Gericht hat heute zwei Fälle verhandelt. Der erste betraf einen Streit zwischen zwei Stadtbewohnern, der in einer Schlägerei endete. Der zweite war ernster. Vor einem Monat kam es in der Stadt zu Zusammenstößen zwischen mehreren Adelsfamilien, die miteinander konkurrierten. Nobili (wie der Stadtadel genannt wurde) wurden auf die Straßen geführt und bewaffneten ihre Diener, Bauern aus Nachbardörfern und alle ihre Verwandten. Mehrere wohlhabende Häuser wurden geplündert und niedergebrannt. Nun musste das Gericht die Anstifter bestrafen und die Opfer entschädigen.
Die kommunalen Richter erledigten den ersten Fall ziemlich schnell. Zahlreiche Zeugen bestätigten, dass zwei Popolans (wie Bürger genannt wurden) in einer überfüllten Straße rangen und einer von ihnen den anderen schlug. Die Richter erklärten jedoch, dass sie den Täter nicht bestrafen würden. „Das Opfer ist kein Bürger der Stadt, und die Kommune wird ihn nicht schützen“, sagte der Vorsitzende Richter. Er erinnerte sich auch, dass dieser Mann während des letzten Krieges mit seiner ganzen Familie und seinem Besitz aus der Stadt geflohen war und dass er die Zahlung einer Sondersteuer für die Reparatur der Stadtmauern umgangen hatte. Sie erinnerten das Opfer sogar daran, dass er sich nicht für eine einheimische Frau, sondern für eine Nachbarstadt entschieden hatte und seine Großmutter nicht aus der einheimischen Familie stammte. Die Kommune weigerte sich, das Opfer als „ihre“ Person zu betrachten und gab ihm die Möglichkeit, irgendwo nach der Wahrheit zu suchen. Die versammelte Menge begrüßte dieses Urteil mit Zustimmung: Jeder sollte im Voraus wissen, dass die Gemeinde respektiert, in Zeiten der Gefahr geschützt und die Steuern pünktlich bezahlt werden müssen.
