Google & Co. know only a part of the Internet. What the search engines do not capture automatically is called the Deep Web. And then there is Darknet, technically speaking a completely encrypted part of the Internet. But the enormous parallel universe Darknet does not only serve illegal purposes. That is how access works.
Google knows everything. For almost every internet surfer, search engines like Bing and Google are the gateway to the web: What appears in the result lists is clicked on, what is not prominently displayed on the first few pages of the hit list remains on the left. But even if the information seeker would take the trouble to click on all the links displayed, he would only see a fraction of what can be found on the Internet because Google & Co. are inevitably not omniscient. If you want to hide something on the web from the search engines, you can easily do so.
Darknet: Secret societies of the Internet
The operators of the Darknet and Deepweb also take advantage of this fact. The idea behind the online darknets is similar to the concept of secret societies and hidden lodges in the real world and has nothing to do with illegal activities: Only those who are personally known to at least one member of the lodge are allowed to attend meetings.
These meetings take place in more or less publicly accessible areas, but only insiders know what happens when and where. Transferred to the Internet, this means: Darknets rely on the same technology as all other Internet services - websites, e-mail, file sharing - and would, in principle, be accessible to everyone. Darknet has been around ever since law enforcement agencies around the world began investigating file-sharing sites and prosecuting the most active participants. The file-sharers looked for ways to continue their activities unhindered and conceived a hidden counterpart to the publicly accessible peer-to-peer (P2P) platforms such as Napster, eDonkey or BitTorrent. In P2P networks, central servers usually ensure that all users can exchange MP3 files, videos, or pictures - without worrying about copyrights or other legal details.
