Sudden dark spots on your penis freaking you out? They’re no cause for worry. Like any other part of your body, your genitals are also prone to skin changes and dark spots are part of them. Most dark spots – which appear in different sizes, shapes, and shades – are usually harmless unless they change in the way they look over time. Let’s look at the various reasons black spots may appear on your penis and how you can treat them at home.
The most common cause of dark spots on the penis is penile melanosis. This condition is characterized by a brown to black colored flat patch usually seen on the shaft of the penis. Such a patch is usually harmless and does not require treatment. 1 The pigmented area may look irregular and can be confused with a penile tumor. However, a penile tumor is not as common as you think and is said to represent only one percent of the total occurrences of this condition. Your doctor may suggest a biopsy to rule out a tumor if there is any severe abnormality in the discolored region.
You can contract allergic dermatitis (a contact allergy due to an irritant) on the skin of your
penis if you are allergic to something you use around your penis like soap or shampoo. This condition inflames the skin in the affected area and causes hyperpigmentation – harmless skin darkening caused by excess production of the pigment melanin – which usually does not require treatment and fades with time. Hyperpigmentation can also be an inherited genetic condition or can occur due to metabolic disorders or even certain medications. 2
Sexual contact with an infected partner can lead to pigmented warts on the penis. These warts, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), are transmitted through sexual intercourse. 3 They are often painless and start out as small pink or red protrusions and then spread rapidly to form clustered protrusions on the skin of the penis. While they may disappear if left untreated, warts are usually contagious so it’s best to get them treated. However, they can recur after treatment. So, always get yourself checked if you notice rapid growth of warts on your penis to rule out any malignancy. Remember to keep your sexual partner informed of your condition.
Moles can appear on the penis quite frequently. They form on penile skin folds and are pale brown or black. They are usually harmless and do not require any treatment. However, any genital mole that enlarges or changes in color over time could be a cause for concern.
If you’ve identified with any of these issues and want to do something about it, here are a few simple and effective home remedies you can try. Remember to do a patch test before applying any of these to the affected area to avoid allergic reactions.
For the longest time, apple cider vinegar has been used for skin abnormalities and been found to be quite effective in treating them. It is also believed to have antimicrobial properties, which make it effective against infections. This makes it a worthy choice for treating dark spots on the penis.
You may experience slight stinging on applying ACV. The stinging feeling should go away in a few minutes. If it doesn’t, dilute the solution further and then use.
Witch hazel is another age-old remedy used extensively for skin conditions. It has anti-inflammatory and astringent properties that could help with dark spots on the penis and soothe skin. Pure witch hazel is said to be more effective than the store-bought variant. 4
Tea tree oil is a plant of great medicinal value. It is a powerful natural antiseptic that keeps skin free from pathogens. 5 Besides treating skin infections, it may also work well in treating dark spots on the penis.
Although this may seem absurd, onion juice has been found to help with skin infections thanks to its antimicrobial properties. 6 It may also reduce dark spots alongside other issues. So, try it on your penis and reap the benefits.
Try these simple remedies and treat the dark spots on your penis effectively at home. Keep an eye out for any allergic reactions or worsened symptoms, and see your doctor immediately in such situations.

Sure, the eggplant emoji is purple. But your actual penis shouldn't ever be, right? Looking down and finding a member that's not the color you expected it to be can be alarming. But in some contexts, it's totally normal for your penis to change color—like, for instance, when you’re aroused, explains Dr. S. Adam Ramin, MD, medical director of Urology Cancer Specialists in Los Angeles. The tip of your penis may turn a deep red or purplish color before or during sex or while you masturbate, which is caused by the increased blood flow to your penis that helps you get and keep an erection.
Yet, if you’re not in the mood, a purple penis could be a legit cause for concern. “In severe cases, the color change could be attributed to a hematoma, which is bruising within the organ's tissue,” says Sunitha Posina, M.D. . Hematoma can lead to loss of blow flow, which needs immediate medical attention. Still though, this is rare, so look to these more common and less scary reasons first.
Here are 9 unexpected reasons why your penis could take on an alarming shade of purple, and what you should do about it.
Bruising happens when an injury causes tiny blood vessels under your skin to leak. That can make your skin turn purple, blue, green, or even black.
Catching your penis in your zipper, getting hit or bumping into something, or just having rough sex are all common causes, says Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt, MD, a urologic surgeon and co-director of The PUR Clinic. You might be more susceptible if you take blood-thinning medication, which can cause bruising to happen more easily.
The good news? Mild bruises usually don’t hurt much (yup, even on your penis), and they’ll start to fade on their own within a few days, Brahmbhatt says. If that doesn’t happen or if you experience severe pain, call your doc.
Yes, this can happen . Even though your penis doesn’t actually have any bones, it does have ligaments and tissue that can overstretch or even bend. That can lead to intense bruising, swelling, and a deep purple color, Dr. Brahmbhatt says.
This is most likely to occur during rough sex (especially doggy style ), since an erection makes your penis less flexible and more prone to bending in a way that it shouldn’t. But penile fractures can also result from intense trauma, like getting severely injured in a car accident.
If your penis is fractured, you’ll likely hear a popping sound followed by a sharp, sudden pain, swelling, and deep discoloration. “In the worst cases, the penis may resemble an eggplant,” says Dr. Brahmbhatt.
The best thing to do is head to the ER right away. Penile fractures usually require surgery, and waiting too long can put you at risk for future difficulty getting erections.
“Many types of medications can trigger allergic reactions,” says Dr. Ramin. The most likely culprits are usually antibiotics, pain relievers (like acetaminophen or ibuprofen), and anti-seizure or antipsychotic meds. That can sometimes result in a purplish rash on your skin — including, yup, your penis.
If the rash is accompanied by skin peeling or pain, it could be a condition called Stevens-Johnson syndrome . While Stevens-Johnson syndrome is rare, it affects men twice as often as it does women, and having an autoimmune disorder can also up your risk, says Dr. Ramin.
If you notice a rash after taking medication, call your doctor. He’ll refer you to a dermatologist, who can evaluate the rash and determine whether it’s caused by an allergic reaction.
Purpura is characterized by small, purple bumps on the skin, often on the penis, buttocks, lower legs, or elbows. The bumps form when the blood vessels under your skin start to leak. The bumps usually aren’t painful, but they can be accompanied by abdominal pain, joint pain, or swelling and pain in the scrotum.
Purpura on the penis is usually the result of an autoimmune reaction that triggers inflammation. “The body’s immune system attacks its own blood vessels, causing the vessels [in the penis] to become inflamed,” Dr. Ramin says. That inflammation is what causes the purple color.
Luckily, purpura is a lot less scary than it looks. If you see any of these symptoms, call your doctor, who might recommend anti-inflammatory drugs to help clear up the bumps and reduce your discomfort, says Dr. Ramin.
If you spot a purple sore on your member, it's possible that the culprit is herpes or syphilis . Herpes sores are more common and usually start out as a blister, which develops into a painful red or purple sore that oozes clear or yellowish fluid. Syphilis can cause red or purple spots that are firm, round, and painless.
Either way, you should see a doctor immediately. When caught early, syphilis can be cured with antibiotics. While you can't get rid of the herpes virus, proper treatment can help you manage outbreaks, and antiviral meds can reduce the pain and help the sores heal.
Avoid sexual contact if you are being treated for a STI, and if you test negative, always practice safe sex regardless.
Penile bruising can happen after medical procedures in the genital area, such as surgery on the penis, groin, scrotum, or surrounding areas, says Dr. Brahmbhatt. Hernia repairs, vasectomies, incision of infected abscesses and scrotal explorations, which are done to examine painful testicles, are common examples.
Penile bruising can extend into the scrotum and vice versa, says Dr. Brahmbhatt. “There is a plane of tissue that connects both,” he says. “If this layer is interrupted then the bleeding can track from one to the other.”
Bruising is also common side effect of intralesional injection therapy, a treatment for Peyronie’s Disease , a condition in which penile scar tissue, known as plaques, give the member a curvature. Injections are sometimes used to break these plaques.
Talk to your doctor if the bruising isn’t improving.
Penis rings trap blood and make your erection stronger, but they can also cause problems, like strangulation of the penis that requires immediate medical attention and removal with bolt cutters . Yikes. “I’ve seen too many rigid/metal penile rings get stuck on the penis,” says Dr. Brahmbhatt. “Therefore I generally do not recommend them.”
If you want to use a ring, the rubber or otherwise flexible ones tend to be safer, as long as you aren’t allergic to any of the ingredients used to make them. “One way to reduce the risk of bruising would be to use lubrication to place the ring,” says Dr. Brahmbhatt. And when you’re done, remove the ring very gently.
Men with erectile dysfunction who use a penis pump, which ushers blood into the member to allow a firmer erection, can sometimes experience penile bruising in the process as well, says Dr. Brahmbhatt.
If you get a penis tattoo or piercing, you may experience penile swelling or penile bruising as side effects. “The swelling/bruising should go down after a few days,” says Dr. Brahmbhatt. “I’ve seen some of these get infected, so if it doesn’t look or smell good, or if the area is getting worse, get yourself checked.”
Don’t worry—this isn’t the most common explanation, but it could be important. Sometimes problems elsewhere in your body can affect your genital area, so talk with your doctor about how your medical history might contribute to bruising. Two very serious examples: Liver failure or congestive heart failure can cause fluid overload in your body that makes your penis and scrotum swell, says Dr. Brahmbhatt
Bleeding disorders that affect your blood’s clotting ability, such as platelet disorders or coagulation disorders, could be factors in penile bruising, too, says Dr. Brahmbhatt. “The process of clotting is quite complex and so therefore any disturbance in the pathway can cause you to have excess bleeding (in the penis or elsewhere),” he says. Low platelets can result from a variety of conditions—cancers, chemotherapy, and viral infections. The good news? “Most of these causes are rare and likely not a reason to freak out (just yet) if you see your penis is bruised,” he says.

Home » Sexual Post » Penile Discoloration: Why Your Penis Has Changed Color
Do you want to know the reason behind your penile discoloration?
When aroused, the skin of the penis can appear reddish or purple to a certain extent.
This is due to the spike in blood flow to the glands and blood vessels.
However, if the skin of the penis turns a different color, it could also indicate a potentially dangerous health condition.
Take a look at the intricate details of penile discoloration.
When the penis changes color, it could be a harmless skin condition or a serious issue, like cancer. That’s why the smart thing to do is talk to a doctor.
Getting treatment and a proper diagnosis will set you on the right track. The discoloration could signify anything from a simple bruise to contact dermatitis and penile melanosis. The list of causes below can help shed some light on this pressing problem.

Any drastic changes in how the penis looks, like a change in color, patch, or cancer growth formation can be a red flag. But, how the body changes will vary depending on what’s causing the issue.
Some ailments are more alarming than others, while some can be permanent, but harmless.
Men between the ages of 20 and 29 have the biggest rates of secondary and primary syphilis. Back in 2016, there were 88,042 newly reported cases of syphilis .
Both syphilis and genital herpes can trigger purple sores on the penis. They are also accompanied by pain, itchiness, burning, exhaustion, and fever.
Plus, out of 8 infections, 4 are curable. These are trichomoniasis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. HPV, HIV, and hepatitis B are currently classified as an incurable infection. When dealing with an incurable viral infection, it is best to use adequate infection treatment.
Genital warts can be removed and treated. But, the infection/virus that causes them can’t be taken care of. Practice safe sex to curb the odds of transmission.
Note: Penile yeast infection could lead to shiny, white patches on the penis. The affected genital tissue could also appear red.
People are allergic to many different things. Those who can’t handle certain medicines can develop an allergic reaction, often referred to as Stevens-Johnson syndrome. A patient with this problem can experience a red/purple rash on their p e nis . The rash could also affect other regions.
With time, the rash can turn into sores or peeling skin. Without adequate treatment, skin complications can become a serious problem. Luckily, this is a rare reaction. The mortality rates are anywhere from 1% to 5%.
Also known as blood spots, this kind of penis discoloration can emerge as red/purple blemishes. An injury does not cause them. Instead, it is a symptom of an underlying ailment.
It could be due to blood vessel inflammation, nutritional deficit, blood clot, or an adverse reaction to the medicine you are taking. Lichen planus can also lead to white/purple patches on the penis that are shaped like a ring.
You can injure the penis from doing just about anything. You could be playing football, hiking, or doing any random physical activity.
When you hurt the penis too much, a bruise can develop. Rough sex, masturbation, penile fracture , and a little zipper mishap can break the surface of the skin.
The bruise becomes soft to touch with a high-impact injury and then turns slightly purple. This is a normal part of the healing process. If you are not careful, you can also hurt the foreskin from penile traction therapy. With serious trauma to the penis, medical attention is necessary.
The redness is supposed to subside in a couple of weeks. But, if you are dealing with phimosis and are worried it might affect the color of your foreskin, talk to a specialist. They can help overcome any skin problem you might be having.
