'Dark Angel' is a FOX series that never gathered more than a cult following, yet ages very well and plays much better on DVD than it ever did on TV. 'Dark Angel' details the partnership between a genetically enhanced warrior on the lam and a partially handicapped vigillante who uses his computer rather than a gun as a weapon. It's worth your while for three very good reasons. First, there's Jessica Alba, who plays the heroine Max. 'Dark Angel' perfectly matches Alba's strengths and weaknesses as an actress and - unlike most of Alba's movie roles - makes her look exceptionally confident and skilled. Watching 'Dark Angel,' it's easy to believe Alba has a long future ahead of her as an actress - which is something you don't feel when watching her movies like 'Honey' and 'Idle Hands.' Secondly, there's Michael Weatherly, who plays cyberjournalist Logan Cale. He's a good, charismatic actor with the smarts to underplay his role, which gives credibility to even some of the comic-book dialogue. Lastly, there's James Cameron's input as producer; you may remember him as the creator of the Terminator films, along as the director of 'Aliens' and 'Titanic.' Naturally, although Cameron's input is minimal, the series has some of Cameron's slightly futuristic cyberpunk feel. Most of the episodes are good, action-packed, escapist adventures, though considerably more downbeat and realistic than most other sci-fi series. No aliens, no reincarnation storylines, and no cute robots! Throughout the first half of the series, Max is almost constantly tracked by a sinister government agent from her past, and this lends the early episodes a constantly anxious atmosphere. If the series could be compared to any other recent shows, the comparisons would be fairest with 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and 'Smallville.' If you like either show, you will probably enjoy 'Dark Angel.' Like those shows, 'Dark Angel' boasts several varied and extremely entertaining supporting characters and loose story arcs. I can watch two-to-three episodes of 'Dark Angel' in one sitting, which I can't do for many sci-fi series. As the series progresses, there are some weak episodes, but the good outweighs the bad in this package. The extras aren't anything to get excited about, but it's certainly nice to have a few mini-documentaries, outtakes and commentary tracks. Most TV boxed sets have very limited extras at best, so the extras on this set are actually pretty decent for a TV show. Be warned, however, that although a second box set exists, the show was radically changed in the second season. Cameron ditched most of the supporting players and started over in an 'X-Men' style, including more wisecracks and bizarre mutants, and less of the grit that made Series One special. Much of the menace was removed once Max and Logan faced newer, more comedic adversaries. Not surprisingly, Season Two was the last for this series. Still, we'll always have Season One to cherish, and can hope that one day Cameron will revive the idea for a feature film. Best of luck to you, Jessica and Michael, and thanks for being a part of our lives by starring in this show.
I had never watched Dark Angel during its short run on FOX. I'm a big Cameron fan, but mixed reviews and lack of interest on my part kept me from giving it a shot. I didn't even know the show had been cancelled when the first season popped up in stores on DVD. One thing I love about DVD is the chance to experience full seasons of TV shows in one big serving. I've become a Buffy/Angel addict, had the chance to collect all The X-Files (which I watched religiously since it first aired when I was a kid) and have also discovered great shows like Felicity, Six Feet Under, and The Shield. I've always been a huge movie buff but I've found that television done right can be much more satisfying than any film. Stories unfold like novels and characters develop in ways that films just can't match. Greg Berlanti's new show Everwood that's on the WB is a good example of this. Hands down, that show is superior to 90% of the garbage at theaters this year. Which brings me to Dark Angel. As an Amazon addict, I read countless reviews before deciding whether or not to buy movies and TV shows I haven't seen before. I'm fairly busy, I'm a writer/director and I run a production company in Los Angeles, and usually don't have the time to post my own thoughts. But I feel Dark Angel merits a post to hopefully get more folks to give this show a shot. After reading a ton of reviews on various DVD sites and here on Amazon, I purchased the set. Based on the comments online, all seeming to either love the show or loathe it, I really wasn't sure what to expect. The set arrived and it sat on my desk for a week or two before I even popped it in. Some free time came up and in a very short perod of time I watched the whole series, mostly late at night on my PC. Some albums, movies and TV shows come into your life at the right time and fill a void or make you feel a certain way. I don't know exactly what was going on but I found myself really moved and involved in this show. I got really emotionally involved in Max's journey to find her long lost siblings and in her relationship with Logan. The scenes where they share blood in particular are touching and original. If you like thought provoking sci-fi with Cameron's fingerprints stamped all over it, this show is for you. Its got action, drama, romance, humor and a decent dose of darkness to keep you enthralled. Jessica Alba, lovely and tough as Max, really shines. Michael Weatherly and John Savage are also terrific. The first season of Dark Angel builds to a nightmarish conclusion in the season finale that will have you screaming at the screen and wanting to rip your hair out because the second and last season isn't released until October. I've already pre-ordered my copy. The 6 disc DVD set contains all 22 episodes of the first season and a nice set of extras. Commentaries on four episodes including the Pilot presentation are chock full of details about the production, hefty budget, special effects and Cameron's involvement as co-creator and writer. Also included are four featurettes, auditon tapes, gag reel/bloopers, and a trailer for Cameron's Dark Angel video game. Highly recommended in my opinion.
Dark Angel - The Complete First Season (DVD): This was the first new sci-fi series I enjoyed in the new millennium. I remember waiting for each episode on KTTV channel 11 in Los Angeles. Weirdly, the series doesn't seem to be available on any streaming services. So, I'm glad to have the discs. They load and play fine on my Panasonic player through a mid-level Sony amp, into a 55" Vizio OLED tv. Highly Recommended.

This girl can act!
Jessica Alba has unfortunately been type-cast as the usual glamorous but dim "totty" in recent times, but she's hiding her light under the proverbial bushel, if you ask me. I missed this series the first time round, and heard rather negative reviews from people who actually hadn't seen it, regarding anything she had been involved in as something to be avoided, after her recent outings. Happily, I'm not like them, and decided to jump right in and buy both series 1 & 2 together, and having only seen half the first series, I am firmly of the opinion that the movie world has seriously short-changed this woman with her recent roles. The story is engaging in the extreme, and strongly reminiscent of "Soldier," starring Kurt Russell, in that children are genetically engineered to become super-soldiers, but unfortunately are more human than their masters. The characters in this series at first appeared somewhat stereotypical, but as I got further into the episodes, they became more fleshed-out, with complex personalities and very real life problems, just like everyone else. However, it's Miss Alba who has captured my attention mostly, as she is seriously wasted in her recent roles, as she not only can play a whole gamut of emotions, but is a seriously good action star to boot. Gone is the fluffy-headed bimbo we're more used to seeing, and in her place is a woman with a dark secret, at first hiding her true self from those around her, but slowly emerging from her shell after finally finding someone who sees her for herself, and not the specially-bred killer her masters wanted. Her fellow characters are just as well developed, but you need to keep watching to fully appreciate them, as they lead lives just as complicated as our heroine. The boss who at heart is actually tender and capable of loving; the strong black lesbian with a soft heart hidden under a caustic exterior, and lets not forget the sensational rastafarian who most people cannot understand a word he says. The "Eyes Only" character is the only one I have a problem with really, being a rich guy who wants to smash the system type, which has been done to death so many times before. However, his circumstances change dramatically, and he becomes more human as time goes on, and so more pallatable for my jaded taste. All told, this is a revelation of a series for me, and I'm loving every minute of it. Even my even more jaded friends are being turned onto this sleeper hit show, after not only my raving about it, but also forcing them to watch it with me, and discussing the topics of each episode afterwards. The episode with the trans-sexual was very well received by many of them, despite the humour involved. I'm actually glad I came to this series somewhat late in life, as I believe I'm mature enough to now view it as more than just an action feature. Miss Alba's agent should watch this series, then maybe she'll get better roles in future movies/shows, where she can actually display the real talent she has for more mature characterisations.

Well worth a look
Bit of a slow start in the pilot but well established background is given. The main character Max is well-played by Jessica Alba and the portrayal of her superhuman abilities is smoothly and convincingly done. A great treat for Michael Weatherly fans as he plays the bespectacled Logan Cale, activist and the man who is trying to help Max connect with her past in return for her using her talents for his cause. Well worth a look in.

Best Sci-Fi TV series ever
I am a huge TV science fiction/fantasy watcher. I've seen almost every one of them, from here and from England and this is the single best season of such series that I've seen. The only one that could match it is Firefly but that show got cancelled before we could see if its quality could be as consistent. Looking at the total run of a series over many years, I'd give the edge to Buffy, Angel, Deep Space Nine or Farscape, but for a single season, this is the one season I'd watch if I could only take one season of one show. The hardest thing about such a show is to avoid pretension (See most of Galactica), bathos (most everything in the genre from The original Star Trek to Warehouse 13), or campiness that is mostly due to a lack of respect for the genre (Lost in Space, anyone?). And to avoid these traps AND add a well thought-out background and a complex romance, that is an accomplishment.
