Daniel Altmaier Upsets Carlos Alcaraz in Paris

Tennis Underdog Daniel Altmaier Stuns World No. 3 in Thrilling Roland Garros Upset

Paris, France – June 1, 2024

In a match that will go down as one of the most dramatic in recent Roland Garros history, Germany’s Daniel Altmaier pulled off a stunning five-set victory over World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz, sending shockwaves through the tennis world.

The 25-year-old Altmaier, ranked 83rd in the world, battled for over four hours on Court Philippe-Chatrier, eventually triumphing 6-7(5), 7-6(4), 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. The match featured jaw-dropping rallies, with Altmaier’s relentless defense and clutch shot-making leaving the crowd in awe.

'This is why I play tennis—for moments like this,' an emotional Altmaier said afterward. 'I’ve worked so hard, and to do it here at Roland Garros against a player like Carlos… it’s a dream.'

Altmaier, known for his fighting spirit, saved three match points in the fifth set before converting on his own third opportunity with a blistering backhand winner. The victory marks his second career Top 5 win, having previously defeated Matteo Berrettini at the 2022 French Open.

Alcaraz, the reigning Wimbledon champion, praised his opponent: 'Daniel played unbelievable. He deserved it today.'

Altmaier’s Cinderella run continues as he advances to the fourth round, where he will face 12th-seeded Taylor Fritz. With his never-say-die attitude, the German is proving once again that he’s a threat on the biggest stages.
