Whether or not you consider yourself a Deadhead, you’ve certainly seen the iconic Grateful Dead “dancing bears” a time or two.
Initially designed by artist Bob Thomas to appear on the back cover of the band’s 1973 release, The History of the Grateful Dead, Volume 1 (Bear’s Choice) , the bears have become deeply ingrained in the culture surrounding the Grateful Dead, and have taken on layers of symbolic meaning over the years.
Before you understand the full meaning behind the Grateful Dead bears, you have to look at the man who they were designed for: Owsley “Bear” Stanley.
In addition to being the band’s sound engineer in the early days, Stanley was also the chemist behind the creation and distribution of a large portion of the LSD that was being consumed in the United States in the 1960s and beyond.
Owsley “Bear” Stanley both engineered and recorded to tape many of the shows that the Grateful Dead performed in the 60s and 70s. In this way, the entire tape trading culture that surrounded the Grateful Dead can be traced back to him.
Stanley always recorded soundboard masters when he ran sound at a show, and inevitably the tapes ended up in the hands of Deadheads. Jerry Garcia and the rest of the band didn’t mind, and later encouraged fans to record their shows, and it spread from there.
That’s a story another day, but basically, Bear Stanley was an extremely important person to both the Grateful Dead and the countercultural movement of the 1960s. He also designed the Steal Your Face logo in collaboration with Bob Thomas , and the Grateful Dead bears were inspired by his association with the band.
The first appearance of the Grateful Dead bears in the public sphere was on the back cover of the Bear’s Choice album. As the name implies, the live recordings that appear on the album were hand-picked from Stanley’s personal archives by Owsley himself, with minimal input from the band.
Before the album and the bears, there existed a 36-point lead slug that was used in printing as a font type. Thomas used that leaden bear as his basis for the design, which features a more cartoon style bear doing the “dancing” motion.
There are five different Grateful Dead bears on the album cover, in colors red, orange, yellow, green, and blue, though bears have since appeared in many different colors in different Grateful Dead related artworks.
Stanley later clarified on his website that while the bears are commonly perceived to be dancing, they are actually doing a high step march. It’s a lot more fun to imagine the bears dancing along to the music, though, so we’re happy to pretend that Bear never made that distinction.
After the release of the album, the dancing bears started appearing on Owsley Stanley’s blotter art, which also happened to be in heavy circulation at Grateful Dead concerts. So, people were tripping on Owsley’s dancing bear acid while watching the Grateful Dead, who had recently released a live album with the bears on the cover.
It’s easy to see how the symbol became so heavily associated with the band, and have come to represent the music, the energy, and of course, the LSD.
Soon fans began to bootleg the original Grateful Dead bears as well as spin-off designs onto t-shirts, stickers, and whatever else they could dream up. All of a sudden people were wearing the bears at Dead shows and elsewhere, and the symbol continued to gain momentum while also being free advertising for the band. This continued for 20+ years after the bear was first introduced, and still continues to this day.
It’s incredible to see the impact and influence that the Grateful Dead have had on American pop culture, both through their music and the tie-dye tinted art associated with it. The culture is still going strong over 25 years after the band played their final concert, and it shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
Bands like the Rolling Stones , Pink Floyd , and Led Zeppelin may have their symbols, but none are quite as recognizable as the symbols of the Grateful Dead.
Even Nike has gotten in on the hype with their new Grateful Dead bear-inspired SB Dunks, which you can check out below. I’ll leave off here for now and save my opinion on the shoes themselves for another segment. Peace!
Garcia means bear in the Basque region of Spain. Is there any connection there too?
Not true: Garcia does not mean bear in Euskera
I just got to day that I saw The Bear himself at the Ritz Carlton where the Grateful Dead was staying.
The lounge was “jacket required” We all brought sport coats, I think even Bob Weir had one on when we saw him in lounge.
Not The Bear though. He rolled in with jeans, jean jacket and a backpack.
Bear wears what he wears cuz everybody knows not to mess with a bear.
Interesting sidebar : In the Inuit culture, the concept of the dancing bear signifies the transformation between shaman and spirit helper.
I have the original Garcia ty-died beanie baby. TY stopped making them because of a lawsuit that they used the Garcia bear without permission
I was and still a deadhead. I was wondering if My Garcia Bear was worth anything?
Wait. The Grateful Dead, as the Grateful Dead, played their last shows in 2015. Otherwise I really need to know where I was for those 5 days.
Sounds like Owsley was that dude. He was the one that made it all happen. Behind the scenes is where the show is made 🐻‍❄️

Video posted on the World Star Hip Hop website is causing a stir. A woman is seen taking her clothes off in the middle of the day at the Johnny Rockets in the 700 block of Ocean Drive.
After a provocative dance, the woman ends up nude on a table where she is covered in water and ketchup before a restaurant worker breaks it all up and tells the woman she needs to leave.
Johnny Rockets contacted police saying more than $400 worth of damage was done.
Mitch Novick, owner of the Sherbrooke Hotel, is part of a task force of business owners who want the fun to continue on South Beach, but in a responsible way. He believes the video is an indication of how things get out of control.
"It's a carnival-like circus, pretty much 24 hours a day, and I am hoping the city can take some control of it," Novick said.
"We're trying to get the bad apples there, some of the businesses that perhaps engage and let people get away with too much. We are trying to encourage them to adopt model behavior," said Jimmy Morales, Miami Beach City Manager.
Morales told NBC 6 the city wants the fun to carry on in the right way and is serious about making sure that happens, "In the most recent budget, the commission dedicated three additional code officers to deal with quality of life issues."
Novick's biggest complaint is about the noise and that nothing is done to control it. Morales said Miami Beach Police are being very proactive.
"They are putting a lot of attention and details down there. Every night we are making major busts, where it's drugs or prostitution, some of the stuff that's going on down there the businesses were complaining about," Morales said.
Police said they are making progress on their investigation, while Johnny Rockets had no comment.
As a concrete example, Morales pointed to the change in the liquor law, where after 2 a.m. there is no drinking outside at the establishments.

To open my wifr is in the military and i am not. We live in two separate countries. She told me a few nights ago that she had let a friend or co worker feel her up while dancing and she reciprocated by grinding him she later got asked to leave the club for whatever reason and he texted her asking her basically to have drinks at his place to finish the night off to which she said she turned him down. I asked her why she told me and she said she didn't want to hide it. I got very angry and at first she didn't understand why because she thought i was different and she thought i would just laigh it off because nothing happend. In my rage i told her not to tell me anything like that again and if she cheats on me to bury it. The next day she understood why i was angry and we talked it out and shr thought i could be a friend to her. She finally understood why i was angry as she talked to female co worker that was with her that night and said that she shouldn't have told me. My wife was terribly afraid i was going to leave her and i reassured her i was not and we are okay now. After everything she asked me if she was a terriblr person for wanting to be touched as it has been a few months since I've seen her which i understood and already knew that was why the events happend. My question is how if possible can i be a friend and a lover to my wife?
My wife told me she let a co worker feel her up while dancing at a club after a work anniversary ball. How to be her friend and not be furious?

I think that's where it's great when couples are also each other's friends, but your SO is a different kind of friend than say your female friends. Over some drinks with female friends, it's okay to talk about your past sex lives, but that's not something to share with your current SO, your current SO generally does not want to hear detailed stories of your sexual past (like boyfriend #3, he was really great with his tongue, could make me orgasm in 3 minutes flat). Similarly, I can understand why you don't want to hear her giddy tales of how she let someone feel her up. From her perspective, I can also understand why she told you, she hasn't had physical touch (sexual physical touch) in such a long time that when she did get it, she felt really happy and wanted to share her happiness. We want to share our happy news with our SO, that was her "happy news". I don't think it's necessary for you to become the lover who can hear those things, would we ever expect our SOs to become the friends with whom we can share past sexual details with? Most would say that's not required.
Thank you much as you added very much needed insight to my predicament
Yeah... you lost me as soon as you said you'd just prefer her not to tell you if she cheats on you and to just hide it. Yet you get furious over a man groping her in a club. Recipe for disaster right there
I told her after the fact that it happend. I was angry about it so i told her to keep it to herself that way no one gets hurt. We all have needs.
Why bother getting angry if you're fine with her cheating then? That seems completely counterproductive to be fine with it as long as you don't know about it, but if you happen to come across that information you fly into a rage and don't know how to treat her with love and respect?
Im not fine with her cheating is the point but if she does id rather not know. The whole point of that statement is dont ever let me find out. Bury it and keep it buried if it does happen. But i think you're missing the point as me and her are fine now i just want to know how i can be this type of friend to her or if its even possible.
Lol and as I said, you lost me as soon as I got to that. If you're giving her permission to have sex with other people then you need to just get over your feelings and act like the good house husband. If you're NOT ok with her cheating, then you tell her if she does it again she can not bother coming home. There are whole sex shops dedicated to taking care of women's needs that don't involve another mans penis in your wife. If you have a problem with that thought then man up and set that boundary instead of telling her to keep it a better secret. Then you won't have this problem at all
Ok. But she didn't cheat. As i said we resolved this but if it happens again yourr saying that i should leave her if she tells me something like this again?
You set your own boundaries in your marriage. If cheating is unforgivable to you then what is yur consequence? No one can decide that but you; but your words are conflicting in saying you have a problem with another man touching her - so she better be sure not to tell you if she cheats.
if she told you, i think there's no reason to freak out. that means she feels bad because of that wich means she won't cheat. So be cool and dont argue... beeing seperated is allways a big problem... girls have "needs" as well
I get that now and i do understand women have needs as well i just have to learn to not be angry when she tells me those things as they will likely happen.
