We explore the reality of weed consumption in China based on the real experience and observations of an expat. Not to mention highly illegal. I lived in China for 4 straight years. Due to the exponential growth of the Chinese economy in the past 20 or 30 years, the city I used to live in is now considered a T1 city. At the time I lived there, the place was considered a less than second-grade city. Meaning development was more than prevalent structurally and tech-wise. However, the social and cultural aspect was still very different from what westerners are used to. Unlike more developed cities like Beijing and Shanghai where western influence is more prevalent. Although I would not call this an underdevelopment, merely a difference of cultures. But there is no denying that it makes things like getting your hands on cannabis a lot harder. At the moment of my brief stretch in China, I coincided in the same city with an expat who, well, liked weed. He also liked the idea of making a profit out of it and tended to live on the edge. Ren drove a scooter that he used as his delivery vehicle. He actually owned 5 or 6 which he was constantly buying and selling for profit. Remember, this is an extremely small city by Chinese standards, even though the population passed the 5M people mark. If you needed weed, or anything else, Ren was the guy you called. But Ren was not the only competitor in town, there was a second alternative. Coincidentally enough, yet another expat. A guy whose story I hate to tell because of the sad ending it has. Nate owned the only American restaurant in town. There was no lack of good food, contrary to popular belief. But you could only find a restaurant for each style of western cuisine. Other than that, you had your pick of Asian cuisine as far as the eye can see. Which is just as nice, if not more. For those seeking a bit of a thrill instead of a full stomach, Nate was also your guy. That is how I got to observe the way Nate operated his side business. When a side business customer came in, they would usually chat with Nate near the register for a while. It was at the end of this interaction that the side business order would be made. Nate would then take the food order and the customer would proceed to sit down. Or so the tales say. The customer would take the change and a baggy containing the side order. After that, the customer was gone with a full stomach and a happy night ahead of him. Right when I was about to leave town, the restaurant closed for a few weeks. Nobody really knew what was happening, but at the same time, everybody could sense it. Remember, this was a small town with a small expat community, so word got around pretty quickly. There had been a crackdown on vice and organized crime. Like the crackdown on prostitution 5 years back. But in this crackdown, Nate was one of the casualties. As expected, nobody went back to the restaurant, even when it was opened back up by his wife. It felt wrong not to go, but it did not feel safe to be affiliated with the place any longer. There were plenty of myths going around of what could happen to a person if they got caught smoking weed. But then again. I also knew of a few people who had been caught using other narcotics and went free the same day. My take on it is there is more of a myth aspect to the theories on legal punishment over narcotics use. The other guy: Ren, used to say that police were after him. But he befriended one of the cops that talked to him, so he was always kept safe on account of their relationship, or so he said. If you ask me though, I doubt this was the only reason. Although most of these crops are hemp, which is a non-psychoactive variety of cannabis. There have been reports that say people with possession of 5 kg or more could receive the death penalty or a life sentence, while other reports say that minor possession could result in a short day retention in jail and a mild monetary fine. More serious penalties like life imprisonment and death are expected for distribution. There are legal crops of industrial hemp but CBD consumption remains highly illegal and most of the finished goods are exported to other countries from this growing CBD economy. Get Med Card. Culture Allegedly, not great. The point is: At the time I lived there, the place was considered a less than second-grade city. And it was. Until Nate got caught. Apparently: There had been a crackdown on vice and organized crime. In fact: The other guy: Ren, used to say that police were after him. Herb Recommended Products:. Featured Brands:.
TLC used to identify cannabinoids in marijuana testing service

Like other medications, cannabis is subject to strict testing, analysis and identification protocols. These are designed to protect consumers as well as accelerate research and development within medical cannabis companies. Below, we take an in-depth look at the medical cannabis market, with a focus on the importance of scientific testing, analysis and identification within the industry. In broad terms, medical cannabis is any form of the marijuana plant used to relieve symptoms of medical conditions. Medical cannabis is usually prescribed by a doctor or healthcare professional as an alternative pain management strategy, though many people choose to self-medicate. These interactions influence how receptors in the brain communicate with the body and can promote both physical and psychological effects. Generally, medical cannabis is more focussed on the physical benefits. A cannabinoid called CBD is isolated and used to treat ailments without subjecting the patient to the intoxicating and mind-altering properties triggered by other cannabinoids such as THC. Harvard Medical School confirms that in the United States, treating chronic pain is the most common use for medical cannabis. The drug is widely used to treat pain caused by multiple sclerosis and offer many benefits over opiates and other highly sedating drugs. The psychological effects of marijuana can also be used to treat conditions such as anxiety and PTSD. A growing body of research suggests medical cannabis is an effective treatment for returned veterans suffering from PTSD. Of course, developing treatments for psychiatric disorders such as PTSD is complex, which makes testing, analysis and identification all the more important. While cannabis has only recently been decriminalised in many countries and individual states, the plant has been harvested for its therapeutic properties for millennia. In the pharmaceutical industry, medical cannabis is highly regulated and must undergo extensive testing before it can be sold as a therapy. Read on to find out more about the common test procedures used to profile medical cannabis. Before undergoing analysis, medical cannabis samples must be carefully prepared. Sample preparation techniques will depend on the type of analysis being carried out and the equipment available, as well as the unique needs and preferences of the laboratory. The condition of the sample is often factored in, alongside the downstream application. For example, products destined for a pharmacy must not undergo analysis that compromises structure or medicinal properties. Testing labs analyse all kinds of cannabis samples, including fresh and dried flower, extracts, tinctures, concentrates and edibles. The nature of the specimen undergoing analysis determines the sample preparation routine. The average cannabis strain contains more than active components, which can have a dramatic impact on potency, effects and therapeutic benefits. Tetrahydrocannabinol THC , the main psychoactive compound of cannabis, is one of the most common cannabinoids analysed during laboratory tests. Cannabidiol CBD is another cannabinoid of interest and is the main active ingredient associated with the pain relieving benefits of the plant. All can influence the physical and psychoactive properties of medical cannabis, making cannabinoid analysis a critical stage of the product development process. Terpenes not only determine the tastes and aromas of different cannabis strains but can also influence medicinal properties. This makes terpenes a key variable of interest in medical cannabis labs. Cannabis strains vary enormously when it comes to potency and medicinal properties. Polymerase chain reaction PCR , which rapidly replicates a miniscule DNA sample to make it suitable for scientific analysis, is the most common technique used to determine strains. Like many crops, cannabis can be laced with heavy metal contaminants such as mercury, lead, cadmium, copper, arsenic and tungsten. Robert Thomas , a cannabis expert and author at Scientific Solutions, stresses the importance of recognising that cannabis and hemp are hyperaccumulators — plants that actively absorb heavy metals from soils. Both plants are often used to cleanse and rehabilitate toxic waste sites. The Chernobyl nuclear meltdown is just one example of industrial hemp being used to purify soil and extract contaminants. For that reason, it is critically important to monitor heavy metals in cannabis and hemp to ensure that products are safe for human consumption. Pesticides are an effective way to control insects like cannabis aphids, hemp russet mites, corn earworms and Eurasian hemp borers however they can leave toxic residues on plants. Solvents such as acetone, ethanol, propane, benzene and butane are often used to extract cannabinoids used in medicinal products. While useful for harnessing the therapeutic properties of the plant, traces of these solvents can remain in finished products such as extracts, concentrates and distillates. Methods such as headspace analysis coupled with GC are useful for testing for residual solvents and ensuring manufacturers meet regulatory standards. Specialised dissecting microscopes allow scientists to detect traces of these microorganisms while more advanced methods such as PCR are used to identify individual bacterial strains. Common microbiology techniques, including petri film analysis, are also useful for detecting microorganisms and mycotoxins. Undoubtedly, the rigorous testing, analysis and identification processes surrounding medical cannabis have helped to transform national and international conversations around the plant. An increase in scientifically driven, evidence-based research exploring the medicinal benefits of cannabis has helped establish the plant as a safe and effective medication with bona fide therapeutic properties. Of all the characteristics analysed in medical cannabis laboratories, heavy metal contaminants are one of the most important.
