Darci Lynne Farmer (born October 12, 2004) [1] is an American ventriloquist, singer and actress. Lynne has been credited with the revival of ventriloquism , earning praise and numerous accolades for her work. [2] [3]

Born in Oklahoma , Lynne developed an interest in singing from a young age, but was held back by her shyness before audiences. Inspired by performances by ventriloquists including Terry Fator , she developed a talent for ventriloquism (combining this with her skill at singing), when performing in a local talent competition with her first puppet in 2014. Her success led to her receiving coaching and assistance in developing her talent, allowing her to win additional talent competitions over the next two years.

Lynne came to national prominence when she appeared on Little Big Shots in 2016, but gained greater recognition and acclaim when she won the twelfth season of America's Got Talent the following year. Her success in that competition fully established her career in ventriloquism, with a number of experts deeming her performance and eventual success in the competition as an inspiration for future would-be ventriloquists. [ not verified in body ] After AGT , Lynne made numerous appearances on other television shows, and she has held several tours with her puppet characters.

Darci Lynne Farmer was born on October 12, 2004. [1] She is from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma . Lynne's parents are Clarke and Misty Farmer, and her three brothers are Nate, Dalton and Nick. [4] Growing up, Lynne loved to sing, but she was shy and was afraid to perform in front of an audience. [1] [5] Her parents encouraged her to overcome her shyness by participating in the 2014 International Cinderella Scholarship Program, where she was crowned International Mini Miss. At that pageant, she also met International Teen titleholder Laryssa Bonacquisti, a young ventriloquist who inspired her to try ventriloquism herself. [6]

In 2014, Lynne entered Edmond's Got Talent where she won first prize after a month's preparation on Bonacquisti's tips. She was soon brought to the attention of ventriloquy coach Gary Owen, who was so impressed by Lynne's skill that he agreed to be her coach and business manager. [7] Since then she has worked with Owen and vocal teacher Tiana Plemons. [6] In 2015, she won first place in both the junior division at Oklahoma's Got Talent and Oklahoma Kids . In March 2016, Lynne made an appearance on Little Big Shots . She performed " I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart " with her puppet Katie, the singing cowgirl. [10] In July 2016, she became the first child ventriloquist to perform at an evening show in the 40-year history of the Vent Haven International Ventriloquists' ConVENTion , where she fronted for celebrity ventriloquists Kevin Johnson and Todd Oliver. Lynne competed in the twelfth season of America's Got Talent in mid-2017. During the first episode broadcast on May 30, Lynne and her puppet Petunia (a sweet, girly bunny), performed " Summertime " from Porgy and Bess . [11] The comedy–singing act featured Petunia cutting off Lynne, so Petunia could continue singing instead. Judge Mel B praised the act and pressed her Golden Buzzer, allowing Lynne to bypass the judge cuts and go straight to the quarterfinals. The video of this performance became the most viewed in the show's history, within 30 hours of broadcast, [11] and later placed fourth on YouTube 's list of Top 10 trending videos in 2017. [12]

For Lynne's first live presentation after her Golden Buzzer performance, she serenaded Mel B with her shy and stuttering Motown mouse puppet Oscar, performing " Who's Lovin' You ". [11] Judges Howie Mandel , Mel B, Heidi Klum and Simon Cowell gave Lynne standing ovations. For this performance, Lynne received enough viewer votes to move on to the semifinals, where she sang " (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman " with her puppet Edna Doorknocker. For her final competition appearance, Lynne performed " With a Little Help from My Friends ", [11] with Petunia and Oscar interacting for comedic effect . Again, she earned standing ovations and the judges' praise. Cowell predicted: "I think you're going to win." [13] For the finale in episode 22, Lynne fulfilled her dream by performing " Anything You Can Do " with her exemplar Terry Fator , with Lynne singing as Petunia and Fator singing as Winston the Impersonating Turtle. After tripping over the first line of the song, she recovered and the act continued. [14] The field was cut to the top five, and then to the top two finalists, Lynne and Angelica Hale . Host Tyra Banks then announced Lynne was the winner of the season, having received the most votes out of the 52 million votes cast. Talking to USA Today , Terry Fator said of Lynne that "she is, at 12 years old, one of the most unbelievable, perfect ventriloquists I've ever seen, and she'll only get better". [60] He also called her "one of the most talented human beings on the planet" in an interview with Billboard . [61]

Professional ventriloquist Sammy King said in an interview with The Fountain Hills Times that "she is very gifted, a great singer and has tremendous comedic timing". [62] Jay Johnson described her on his personal blog as "a wonderfully talented girl" with "near perfect" ventriloquism technique and "singing chops [that] could stand alone without the puppet assistance", whose "dedication to the art and ... young spirit will influence a generation of belly talkers to come". In August 2020, the Edmond Historical Society and Museum opened an exhibit, titled "Darci Lynne's Got Talent". Dedicated to Lynne, it includes clothing from her television performances, her first practice puppets, tour posters and scripts. [64]

Emma Charles thought that she and her family were living a normal life. But then she discovered that her husband had been sexually abusing their daughter Tamsin since the age of ten. Twelve years on, Emma recalls that devastating day and the traumatic events that followed
In many ways, we were an ordinary family – mum, dad, two kids, a Volvo in the drive. And in some ways we weren’t so ordinary. As a ship’s engineer, my husband Daniel worked away from home for up to four months at a time. But I never for a moment dreamt that we were extraordinary – until that day.
It started out fine, that Tuesday in December 1996. Our younger daughter, Claire, 13, was at school, and I was looking forward to spending some time with Tamsin, who had just broken up for the holidays. At 15, she was a weekly boarder at a specialist school for high-ability dyslexics.
We chatted about what she was going to do. That was when the first hint of discord arose. Tamsin and I squabbled, like all mothers and daughters. But that day she was impervious to reasoned argument. She began making hurtful personal attacks on her father and me, something she had never done. At bedtimewe kissed goodnight, but for the first time we parted with a coolness between us.
The following evening, I was in the living room when she burst in, flung a piece of paper at me and stormed out. ‘I have to leave or he has to,’ she had written. ‘And you seem to need him. And f*** you, you probably won’t believe me anyway.’ She was talking about her father – telling me that he had been sexually abusing her for the past five years. In the seconds it took me to absorb her words, my world came tumbling down.
I found her down the road with her dog. ‘Come home and tell me about it,’ I begged. She looked into my eyes and must have been reassured by what she saw. ‘He won’t leave me alone,’ she cried. ‘He’s always feeling me up. He brushes against my breasts so I know it’s not accidental, but he could persuade someone else it was.’
Hope blossomed in my mind. Maybe it was just a misunderstanding, an over-tactile father who would have to learn to respect his daughter’s personal space. ‘Has he ever touched you between your legs?’ I asked. ‘Last time he was home on leave,’ she sobbed.
Tears were falling from my eyes as I looked up the number for social services and picked up the phone. I just knew I had to do the right thing.
Daniel and I had been married for 18 years. I was 27 when we met, working as a medical photographer; he was a year older and at college, studying for his Second Engineer’s certificate. He was tall and slim with auburn hair and blue-grey eyes and a full beard and moustache. And he was gentle, laid-back – all the things I wasn’t. Within a week, I had decided he was the man with whom I wanted to spend the rest of my life. We married the following year.
I hadn’t wanted children. It was Daniel who felt that we wouldn’t be a ‘proper family’ without them. Tamsin was conceived two years after our wedding, and Claire came along two and a half years after that. As it turned out, I loved being a mother and Daniel was good with the girls as babies. But as they grew up, he changed. His own parents had been authoritarian, and not reluctant to use a belt to hit their children. He, too, resorted to smacking and violence.
One incident in particular stands out. When the girls were seven and four, I noticed ‘fingertip’ bruising on Claire’s arm. I really went for Daniel, threatening to kick him out if he couldn’t control his temper. He was angry with me for taking him to task; but when he realised I was serious, he backed down and apologised. Over and over again, we talked about what was reasonable behaviour and over and over he agreed with me. But his efforts to improve never lasted long.
Why did I stay with him if things were so bad? Well, they weren’t bad all the time. Mostly, we had a good family life. I knew the harm that divorce causes to children. I still loved Daniel and I thought we could make it work. Until that day.
