When Brad Howard received an email from his 17-year-old son's physics teacher about the high school junior's disruptive behavior in class, he decided to sit him down and have a talk.
"If I get another call from her, I'm going to come up there to your school and sit with you in class," Howard warned his son, Bradley.
The teenager behaved for a couple months without complaint. But two weeks ago, Howard's wife, Denise, told her husband there was another incident.
"You need to go up there and make good on your promise," said Denise, waking Brad up early on a Friday morning. "You have to go to school today."
Friday was his only day off, but Howard called Rockwall-Heath High School in Heath, Texas, as well as Bradley's teacher, to ask for permission to sit-in on the class. They agreed.
Howard got to the class early and took a seat at Bradley's desk. He watched as his son walked into the classroom, laughing and greeting his friends.
Then the teen heard a familiar voice from behind, "Hello, Bradley."
He turned around, and sure enough, his dad was sitting in his chair with his arms folded.
"He was pretty shocked. I think the whole class was a little intimidated at first," Howard told CBS News. "But he put two and two together."
About 40 minutes into the class, Howard snapped a picture to send to his wife, proving he followed through on his promise. She then forwarded the photo in a family group text to show their other children the consequences of bad behavior in school.
"My son is very kind hearted, but he's very talkative," Howard explained. "He loves to be the life of the party — loves to get a laugh. He's 'Mr. Personality.'"
Brad's sister, Molli, poked fun at her younger brother on Twitter, posting her dad's very serious selfie from inside the high school classroom.
"My dad told my brother if he got another call from the physics teacher complaining he would go sit in his class..dad got another call," she wrote in a tweet that has gone viral with nearly 2,000 retweets.

While thousands online may have gotten a kick out of the dad's unusual parenting style, Howard said his son took the punishment very seriously.
"Sitting there, he realized that his actions caused a great inconvenience to me," Howard said. "I probably wouldn't do that again, but it's helped Bradley. He's been doing good in that classroom ever since."

Back when I was a boy, my dad would take a belt to me a couple of times a year. And at Melrose Park (Illinois) Elementary School, there was a teacher who swung a mean wooden paddle.
Dad didn't spank often and I never got the sense his heart was in it. I am the middle son of three.
But it really didn't matter if Dad was fully committed to spanking or if he thought much about it in terms of child development, which I doubt. When he swung that belt it hurt.
My brothers and I would try to outsmart him. When we knew the leather was coming, we would stash wash cloths or dish towels in our pants to cushion the blow. My older brother once stashed a plate back there.
It's been a long time since eighth grade, when I was on the receiving end of the paddle at school.
The paddle that day didn't hurt as much as my dad's belt. I think the teacher eased up because I was small for a 13-year-old, generally a good kid and because my mother was beautiful. Whenever mom came in for a parent-teacher conference he would wear a coat-and-tie and act strange.
The irony is that I was punished for something I did not do. One afternoon, the teacher was absent as I exited class early. I picked up the chalk and on my way out wrote the word "no" in front of the word "homework."
The next day the teacher was as furious as a honey badger. I confessed. I was paddled.
Only later did I discover that after I had left the classroom someone else wrote on the board, too. The second message was a bit harsher: it said the teacher was having carnal relations with a donkey.
The reason I'm thinking about spanking, belts and wooden paddles is because colleague Claudette Riley recently wrote about a St. Louis lawmaker who introduced a bill in Jefferson City that would ban what is politely called "corporal punishment" in Missouri public schools. Similar bills have been introduced in the past.
I was surprised it was still in use and have learned that it is used in many rural Missouri school districts, including Marshfield and Laclede County R-1.
I don't know if being struck with a belt improved my behavior or changed the arc of my life. I do know I tried hard not to disappoint my parents but occasionally did. My mom died in 1997 and my dad in 2010.
I have one child, now 24. The first time I struck him was when he was crawling. He repeatedly would make his way to the electrical outlets and try to remove the plastic plugs my wife and I had placed there to keep him from killing himself. My son understood "no." Yet he would crawl to the outlet and look at me. I'd say "no"; pick him up and place him elsewhere in the house; and he would crawl right back to the outlet and stare me down as he again reached for the outlet.
I used two fingers and smacked his hand as I said with God-like authority: "No!"
He looked at me, puzzled and angry; his face slowly turned red; then he started to cry; and then he hit me back.
I think I spanked him twice in his life after that; both times were when I believed he was doing something that could have resulted in his death.
I sought out a few others and asked if they were spanked and, looking back, what they thought about it.
Ned Reynolds, 73, longtime KY3 sportscaster:
"It involved a hair brush or a swat to the behind. I have two brothers and, needless to say, we were raising hell every single moment. It was never done in a harmful way. It was a message that 'you can't do these things. This is the way we live and this is the way you are going to behave.' "
Tyler "Honey Badger" Johnson, 28 amateur mixed-martial-arts fighter:
"When we were very little great grandma used a switch but mom made her stop doing that. Instead, it was the hand. Mom stopped when we were old enough to reason."
Johnson, working on a psychology degree at Missouri State, has two daughters. He does not strike them.
"Just about any study I have seen shows that corporal punishment is ineffective after the child has reached the age of reason," which is about age 4, Johnson said, depending on the child.
Hal Higdon, 52, chancellor of Ozarks Technical Community College:
Higdon said his parents never used corporal punishment on him or his brother because they never had to.
"I worked very hard to make sure it never happened," Higdon said. "I think we both knew that my mom and dad believed adamantly that the school was always right. We knew that if we got in trouble in school we would get in trouble at home. So we never got in trouble at school."
Bill Maxheimer, 72, Rogersville, interviewed at Dennis' Place, a tavern on Sunshine Street:
"I think it was a good thing. My dad used a belt on us, but only when he was really pissed and when I deserved it. I did the same with my kids."
Greg Hensley, 53, Belton, grew up in Springfield, also interviewed at Dennis' Place:
"My dad used a thick leather belt and he used it all the way from the ankles up to the neck. ... You would not have the crime you have today if more parents spanked their children."
Cheryl Clay, 62, president of the Springfield NAACP:
"I was spanked every day and I'm not ashamed to talk about it. We tell my mother that if the laws of today were in effect she would be in jail now. Do I think it was abuse? No. That was just how it was done in our family. I did the same thing to my sons.
"My mother kept a switch on top of the refrigerator. I got spanked all through grade school. I think it stopped when I was starting to have my own social life. That's when I could be grounded."
