A Michigan dad took graphic photos of his own daughter and tried using the 7-year-old as “currency” to have sex with the girlfriend of a suspected child predator, authorities said Wednesday.
Detectives were investigating the alleged abuse of another victim — a 21-year-old woman with special needs — when they made the disturbing discovery this month. While searching the home of Daniel Flowers in Mt. Morris, cops found a backpack filled with candy and toys as well as photos of a child on his phone, according to the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office.
The man who sent those pictures to Flowers was later identified as 28-year-old Jerome Chene, who was apparently offering his child in exchange for sex with Flowers’ girlfriend, authorities said.
“Can you imagine, a 7-year-old girl being used as currency?” Sheriff Chris Swanson said at a news conference. “This young life was being exploited by somebody very close so that person could have sex with another human being.”
Chene was arrested last week after showing up to Flowers’ apartment “to facilitate the exploitation” of his daughter, Swanson said. Flowers, 36, and his partner, 31-year-old Michelle Erwin, have also been charged.
The investigation began July 2 after a nurse told authorities that one of her patients reported being abused at a Mt. Morris home.
The Genesee County Human Oppression Strike Team, known as G.H.O.S.T., took over the case and learned the young woman had met Flowers and Erwin on the social media app MeetMe and had been living with them, according to the sheriff’s office. The investigation revealed that the couple was “facilitating people to come have sex with this special-needs individual,” Swanson said.
Authorities then searched the suspects’ home and found the child’s photos as well as another item that caught their attention — a backpack filled with “provocative things, disturbing things,” including sour patch candy, the sheriff said.
“It’s not uncommon that a predator would use (items) like Hatchimals, coloring books, plush toys — in this case, from ‘Frozen’ — and candy,” Swanson told reporters.
The three suspects have since been charged with multiple child sex crimes and could face decades in prison if convicted.
Swanson urged the community to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity in their surroundings, warning that child abuse “is happening in everybody’s backyard.”
