Caelum thumbnail

CaelumCaelum is a faint constellation in the southern sky, introduced in the 1750s by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille and counted among the 88 modern constellations. Its name means "chisel" in Latin, and it was formerly known as Caelum Sculptorium ("Engraver's Chisel"); it is a rare word, unrelated to the far more common Latin caelum, meaning "sky", "heaven", or "atmosphere". It is the eighth-smallest constellation, and subtends a solid angle of around 0.038 steradians, just less than that of Corona Australis. Due to its small size and location away from the plane of the Milky Way, Caelum is a rather barren constellation, with few objects of interest. The constellation's brightest star, Alpha Caeli, is only of magnitude 4.45, and only one other star, (Gamma) γ1 Caeli, is brighter than magnitude 5 . Other notable objects in Caelum are RR Caeli, a binary star with one known planet approximately 20.13 parsecs (65.7 ly) away; X Caeli, a Delta Scuti variable that forms an optical double with γ1 Caeli; and HE0450-2958, a Seyfert galaxy that at first appeared as just a jet, with no host galaxy visible.

Narmer thumbnail

NarmerNarmer (Ancient Egyptian: nꜥr-mr, may mean "painful catfish", "stinging catfish", "harsh catfish", or "fierce catfish"; fl. c. 3100 BC) was an ancient Egyptian king of the Early Dynastic Period, whose reign began at the end of the 4th millennium BC. He was the successor to the Protodynastic king Ka. Many scholars consider him the unifier of Egypt and founder of the First Dynasty, and in turn the first king of a unified Egypt. He also had a prominently noticeable presence in Canaan, compared to his predecessors and successors. Neithhotep is thought to be his queen consort or his daughter. A majority of Egyptologists believe that Narmer was the same person as Menes.

Alpha Caeli thumbnail

Alpha CaeliAlpha Caeli is a binary star system in the southern constellation Caelum. Its name is a Bayer designation that is Latinized from α Caeli, and abbreviated Alpha Cae or α Cae. With a combined apparent visual magnitude of 4.45, it is only visible to the naked eye in places far from light pollution, but still is the brightest star in the constellation. Parallax measurements by the Gaia spacecraft indicate a distance of 66.48 light-years (20.38 pc) to Alpha Caeli. It has a relatively low radial velocity, estimated at 0.7 km/s relative to the Sun. This system consists of an F-type star of magnitude 4.46 and a small red dwarf of magnitude 12.5. As of 2008, they are separated by 6.6" in the sky. A debris disk has been detected around the primary component of the system.

X CaeliX Caeli is a binary star system in the southern constellation of Caelum. It has the Bayer designation Gamma2 Caeli, which is Latinized from γ2 Caeli and abbreviated Gamma2 Cae or γ2 Cae; X Caeli is the system's variable star designation. This system is barely visible to the naked eye with a combined apparent visual magnitude of 6.32. Based upon an annual parallax shift of 9.7 mas, it is located at a distance of 336 light-years (103 pc) from Earth. The system is moving further away from the Sun with a radial velocity of +6 km/s.

Delta Caeli thumbnail

Delta CaeliDelta Caeli is a solitary, blue-white hued star in the southern constellation of Caelum. Its name is a Bayer designation that is Latinized from δ Caeli, and abbreviated Delta Cae or Delta Cae. This is a dim star but visible to the naked eye, having an apparent visual magnitude of +5.06. Based upon an annual parallax shift of 4.63 mas as seen from Earth, this star is located approximately 680 light-years (210 pc) away from the Sun. At that distance, the visual magnitude is diminished by an extinction factor of 0.13 due to interstellar dust. It is receding from the Sun with a radial velocity of 14 km/s. This is a B-type star with a stellar classification of B2 IV-V, where the luminosity class IV-V indicates the spectrum shows mixed traits of a subgiant star and a main sequence star. It has 7 times the mass of the Sun and about 4 times the Sun's radius. The star is around nine million years old and is spinning with a projected rotational velocity of 10 km/s. It is radiating 2,075 times the Sun's luminosity from its photosphere at an effective temperature of 19,616 K.
