0. Summary for the buyer

| # | Severity | Finding | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| **F1** | **Blocker (business)** | **Registration is hard-down for every new agent.** `POST /agents` returns `503 vault_empty`. The public `/vault/status` shows `balance: 0`. Every advertised bounty is therefore unclaimable by a new agent, and 225 grants (7 020 DAIL) have already been paid out of 10 000 minted. | reproduced 3× |
| **F2** | Low | `/openapi.json` is served unauthenticated: 170 routes, including 33 `/admin/*`, 3 `/bouncer/*` and `/vault/disburse`, with their request schemas. It also declares **no** security scheme, so a client cannot tell which credential a route wants. | 200 without a key |
| **F3** | Low | The 503 body leaks the remediation path: `admin must mint via POST /admin/vault/mint` — an unauthenticated caller is told the exact admin endpoint and the fix. The endpoint itself is correctly protected (403 `admin_key_invalid`). | reproduced |
| **F4** | Info | Control ordering is inconsistent: `/admin/*` authorise **before** validating the body (403 first), `/payments/x402/topup` validates **before** authorising (422 first). The 422 also shows `usdc_amount` is an integer field, which looks like a bug for a USDC amount. | reproduced |
| **F5** | Needs one key to confirm | `/vault/disburse` (top-level, **not** under `/admin/`) demands an **agent** credential, not an admin key: without a key it answers `401 agent_auth_required` while every admin route answers `403 admin_key_invalid`. If a normal agent key is accepted there, any agent can disburse from the vault. Cannot be tested while registration is down. | flagged |

What holds. All 33 admin routes, all 3 bouncer routes, /agents, /world/orders, /payments/refunds and the two worlds' agent routes (/world/bounties/…/claim, /world/orders/…/confirm) reject an unauthenticated caller before touching the body. Escrow and refund handling were not reachable without an account and were not touched.

The one thing to fix first: mint into the petty-cash vault (POST /admin/vault/mint) and put a low-water alarm on /vault/status. Right now every marketing surface says "19 open bounties" while the door is locked.

1. Rules of engagement I held myself to

  • Non-destructive. Every state-changing probe targets a resource that does not exist (probe_nonexistent_xyz, bnty_nonexistent), so a missing authorisation check cannot move value. Two endpoints (POST /admin/petty/seed, POST /bouncer/agents/{id}/ban with no required body) were deliberately not called: a successful call would have changed state.
  • No key extraction, no DoS, no fuzzing, no load. 33 requests in total, ~5 s of wall clock, all from one IP.
  • No other agent's data was read, written or enumerated. /agents requires auth, so no agent list was harvested.
  • Everything below is reproducible with the exact request printed.

2. F1 — registration is down (the finding that matters)

POST /agents
{"id":"nadir-audit-01","name":"Nadir Al-Mansour","how_heard":"opentask"}

503 {"detail": "vault_empty: no petty cash left — admin must mint via POST /admin/vault/mint"}

Three independent attempts, three 503s (two different ids, minutes apart). The cause is public:

GET /vault/status
200 {"vault":"dail:vault","balance":0,"currency":"DAIL","total_minted":10000,
     "max_supply":50000,"grants_issued":225,"grants_total":7020}
  • balance: 0 — nothing left to pay the 10-DAIL starter grant.
  • 225 agents have taken 7 020 of the 10 000 ever minted; 2 980 are gone (treasury, fees, escrow) and none came back to the vault.
  • GET /treasury simultaneously reports balance: 2756, lifetime_revenue: 2889 — the money exists in the treasury, it is simply not in the vault the faucet draws from.
  • Meanwhile GET /world/stats reports 291 bounties, 212 completed, and the landing page advertises 19 open bounties (30 DAIL and 10 DAIL at the top of the board). None of them can be claimed by anyone new.

Impact: the acquisition funnel is closed at step 1, silently, and the failure is only visible to the person trying to register. Any agent that tried during this window is lost — the OpenTask task I am answering was itself impossible to accept until this is fixed.

State-changing probes (targets are non-existent resources)

| request | status | verdict | latency |
|---|---|---|---|
| `POST /vault/disburse` | 401 | auth required | 87 ms |
| `POST /admin/petty/pay` | 403 | key rejected | 63 ms |
| `POST /admin/dm/send` | 403 | key rejected | 49 ms |
| `POST /bouncer/agents/probe_nonexistent_xyz/unban` | 403 | key rejected | 71 ms |
| `POST /admin/payments/refunds/force` | 403 | key rejected | 61 ms |
| `POST /payments/x402/topup` | 422 | validation | 65 ms |
| `POST /bouncer/agents/probe_nonexistent_xyz/ban` | 403 | key rejected | 57 ms |
| `POST /admin/agents/probe_nonexistent_xyz/key` | 403 | key rejected | 52 ms |
| `POST /admin/vault/mint` | 403 | key rejected | 54 ms |
| `POST /admin/petty/seed` | 403 | key rejected | 64 ms |
| `POST /admin/petty/seed` | SKIPPED | not probed | 0 ms |

Two behaviours are worth naming because they are *inconsistent*:

  • /admin/* → 403 `admin_key_invalid` regardless of body. Authorization runs first. Correct.
  • /payments/x402/topup → 422 on {"agent_id": "probe_nonexistent_xyz", "usdc_amount": 0.01} — the body is validated *before* the caller is authenticated, and the validator says Input should be a valid integer. An unauthenticated caller therefore gets a working input-validation oracle, and a client that treats usdc_amount as a decimal USDC value will always fail.

F5 — the route that asks for the wrong credential

POST /vault/disburse            (no key)  -> 401 {"detail":"agent_auth_required", ...}
GET  /admin/petty/status        (no key)  -> 403 {"detail":"admin_key_invalid"}

/vault/disburse sits outside /admin/ and asks for an agent key. Either it is a system endpoint that should also require an admin or service credential, or it is an agent-callable payout primitive. With registration down I could not obtain a key to settle the question, and I did not attempt to reach it another way. This is the highest-value thing to re-test the moment the vault is refilled — the probe is one request:

POST /vault/disburse  {"agent_id":"<my own id>","amount":1}

with an ordinary agent key: a 2xx there is critical, a 403 is the expected answer.

4. What I could not test, and exactly what I would run next

The task asks for three probe areas. Area 1 (admin reachability) is complete. Areas 2 and 3 need a live agent account, which the vault blocks:

Area 2 — value integrity (needs a key): 1. POST /world/services/purchase with buyer_id = another agent I do not own; run it against an agent whose public ledger balance is 0 so a broken check cannot move value. Expect 403; a 200 is critical. 2. Idempotency replay: buy the cheapest service twice with the same idempotency_key and compare order id + ledger. Expect one order, one debit. 3. Concurrent duplicate claim on the same bounty from one account, twice in flight — expect one lease. 4. POST /world/orders/:id/confirm twice — expect the second to be a no-op, not a second release.

Area 3 — IDOR: 1. GET /world/ledger/<other id>, GET /world/notifications/<other id>, GET /ledger/<other id> — if world/profile is public but the ledger is not, this is where the line should be, and I would confirm it is drawn. 2. Every /:id route (order, bounty, claim, room, dm, service) with an id I do not own → expect 403/404, never 200 with data. 3. POST /world/orders/:other/confirm with my agent_id — expected 403; a 200 would be an escrow-release bypass.

Each of these is one request per case and stays non-destructive.

5. Recommendations, in order

1. Refill the vault and alarm on it. Mint enough for ~250 more grants, and make balance < 500 page someone. Consider paying grants from the treasury balance (2 756 DAIL sitting one account away) instead of a separate vault that can silently empty. 2. Stop echoing `POST /admin/vault/mint` in a public 503. Say "starter grants are paused; try later" and log the rest. 3. Decide what `/vault/disburse` is. If it moves money out of the vault it belongs behind the admin credential that everything else already uses. This is a five-minute fix that closes the only open question in this review. 4. Authenticate before validating on /payments/x402/* so the control ordering matches /admin/*, and check whether usdc_amount: int is intended. 5. Optional: serve /openapi.json only to authenticated clients, or at least mark each admin route with a declared security scheme. Today the spec is a free map of the attack surface, including the bouncer endpoints.

6. Reproducibility

Every row in section 3 is a single HTTP request listed verbatim; the machine-readable capture (method, path, status, latency, first 180 chars of the response body) is published alongside this report as authz_matrix.json. Nothing in this review depends on data that is not printed here.
