D2USP: Digital Device Use Self-Monitoring Platform
HiradYesterday, while travelling on a fully booked train in Germany, I randomly sat next to a researcher named Malte, specialising in sociology. We naturally began chatting about our work, and he shared something exciting.
He introduced an upcoming project aimed at improving productivity, benefiting the public good, and advancing research that instantly grabbed my attention.
This resonated deeply with me, given my ongoing focus on productivity, especially this year. It’s a topic I’m eager to share with you all soon.
Malte and his team have developed software for both Windows and Mac that helps you effortlessly track your digital device usage. He even gave me a sneak peek at its dashboard, which breaks down how you've used various apps and provides daily insights into your device habits.
We discussed how different productivity methods suit different people, whether neurotypical or neurodiverse and how some strategies work for some but not for others. But one thing I believe is universal—data-driven decisions are the foundation for improving your productivity and fine-tuning the techniques that work best for you. And that’s exactly what this software offers. It collects data locally, giving you control over it, while also allowing you to donate anonymised data for research if you choose.
This software bridges sociology and informatics. This tool is pushing us all towards more informed, conscious tech use. I told Malte I'd help spread the word, and now I’m asking you to do the same. Let’s all benefit from this open-source self-monitoring tool—not just for our own good, but for the public good.
