The Czech Republic was formed in the
late 9th century as the Duchy of Bohemia and came to be
a cultural, academic, and scientific leader of central Europe.
It was part of the Holy Roman Empire and the
Austro-Hungarian Empire.
At the end of World War I it merged with its neighbor
to the east, Slovakia, forming Czechoslovakia,
and fell under the control of the Soviet Union after
World War II.
The communist regime collapsed in the 1989 Velvet Revolution,
and the country redivided into the Czech and Slovak Republics
in 1993.
Its many industries through the years have,
of course, produced some excellent plumbing.
These pictures are from a brief visit to the Czech Republic,
part of a trip from
Athens to Paris by train .

How do you find the correct restroom?
The Prague Metro system
has some toilet facilities.
You have to pay to use them, but that payment helps to keep
them much cleaner than they otherwise would be.
Paying a nominal fee keeps some of the mess from happening
in the first place, and the money collected can be used
to pay cleaning staff and buy cleaning supplies.
You will also need to pay to ride the Metro:

for a ticket that lets you ride up to five stations away
and for a period of 30 minutes.
Make sure to validate your ticket when you enter the system
and hold onto it until you leave the system at the far end.
See the blue and red printing across the bottom,
that's the validating mark on mine.
You buy the tickets in little shops near the Metro station,
a place you can buy snacks and smokes and magazines.
It can be a little tricky to find them on Sunday evenings.
The locals buy several in advance when they have the
opportunity.

It features the standard rocker switch and grounded
230V outlet found throughout western and central Europe.
The City Night Line
passenger train provides great
service north and west from Prague through
Berlin,
Köln, and Amsterdam.
The City Night Line includes the common
couchette overnight accommodation, but it
also has luxury first-class sleeper compartments.
This is the nicest overnight train I have ever ridden!
The gymnastic minded toilet seen above is in
the spacious handicap accessible lavatory
in a couchette car
on board the City Night Line train.
The luxury First Class sleeper compartments
on the City Night Line train have their own
compact but private toilet and shower!
It is not as cramped as you might expect —
there is no need to stand straddling the toilet
as you shower.
The private lavatory is oval in shape, with the toilet
at one side and a sink and shower area at the other.
This washroom is on board a EuroCity
train running from Budapest
to Prague.
A Sani-Flush blue border indicates a toilet, sink, shower, or
other plumbing that I've used.
How long have my Toilets of the World pages been around?
They started in the mid 1990s as a single page
on a Purdue University server.
The Internet Archive Wayback Machine lets you see
what that looked like as far back as January 17, 1999 .
My cromwell-intl.com domain appeared in September, 2001,
although the Wayback Machine didn't notice its one enormous
Toilets of the World page until
January 17, 2002 .
Some time soon after that I split it into categories,
and the collection has grown ever since.
In December, 2010 I registered the
toilet-guru.com
domain and moved the pages to a dedicated server.
