Miley Cyrus’ public transition from Disney darling to adult hit fans like a wrecking ball, and she has no regrets about it.
The “Prisoner” songstress, 28, has overcome every scandal a young pop star could face, from a wild Vanity Fair cover to leaked nude photos and drug use. Though she at first atoned for each controversy as she faced it, she later changed her tune and became proudly unapologetic.
Here are her 11 biggest scandals through the years.
In 2008, a hacker accessed Cyrus’ personal photos and leaked them across the internet. One photo showed Cyrus intimately posing for then-boyfriend Thomas Sturges.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Cyrus said her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, tried to ignore the scandal at the time while her mom, Tish Cyrus, was infuriated.
“My dad ignored it because it’s just like any teenage girl and their dad’s like, ‘Let’s please not have this conversation,'” she told the magazine . “My mom, I think it made her really angry. I think even she felt it could be distracting from what I was doing.”
For Vanity Fair’s June 2008 cover , Annie Leibovitz photographed then-15-year-old Cyrus in nothing but a sheet.
Then a Disney star on “Hannah Montana,” Cyrus faced immediate controversy for posing so scandalously. At first, the “Malibu” singer caved to the backlash and issued an apology.
“I appreciate all the support of my fans and hope they understand that along the way I am going to make mistakes and I am not perfect,” the statement read. “I never intended for any of this to happen, and I am truly sorry if I have disappointed anyone.”
Ten years later, Cyrus rescinded her apology . Re-sharing a New York Post cover via Twitter , Cyrus wrote, “IM NOT SORRY” and added, “F–k YOU.”
Cyrus and Lovato had been lifelong friends, but when Lovato was set to make her Disney Channel debut in “Camp Rock” in 2008, the tides turned.
Cyrus and pal Mandy Jiroux uploaded a video to Cyrus’ YouTube in which they mocked Lovato and the “Wizards of Waverly Place” star, fueling rumors that their friendship was on the rocks. She and Jiroux eventually deleted the video and apologized.
In 2009 when she was just 16, Cyrus faced backlash for making “slanted eyes” in a photo with friends, which many took to be offensive against the Asian community. She chalked it up as making “goofy faces,” which didn’t fly.
A group representing LA-based Asians sued Cyrus for the gaffe and demanded $4,000 in damages per complainant. A judge eventually tossed out the lawsuit.
It certainly was a party at the Teen Choice Awards.
While performing her mega-hit single “Party in the U.S.A.,” Cyrus, who was still starring on “Hannah Montana” at the time, made headlines by pole dancing. It was a far different image for someone appearing on the Disney Channel.
At the time, Disney Channel had no comment on the sensual dance moves.
In December 2010, a seemingly now-former friend leaked video of Cyrus smoking salvia from a bong. Though she first said she was “disappointed” in herself, she later showed her good sense of humor by honoring it on the 10-year anniversary .
“Happy 10 year anniversary to the groundbreaking video of a teenager smoking a bong & saying dumb s–t to their friends,” she captioned the re-shared video.
In 2012, Cyrus purchased a penis-shaped cake for then-boyfriend Liam Hemsworth (whom she’d later marry and divorce). A picture of her licking the cake went viral and she later admitted the inappropriately sweet treat got her fired from the animated film “Hotel Transylvania.”
‘Twas the dance move seen ’round the world.
Cyrus certified herself as a controversial star during her “Bangerz” era when she twerked all over Robin Thicke during the 2013 MTV VMAs while performing a duet version of “Blurred Lines.” Scantily dressed in skin-tight shorts and a crop top during the shocking performance, Cyrus caused jaws to drop.
Friends of Cyrus later told Page Six that they suspected she may have been on drugs during the controversial performance.
Cyrus continued to throw caution to the wind in 2013, following up her twerktastic performance at the VMAs with a marijuana-laden one at the MTV EMAs.
While accepting the best video award for her song “Wrecking Ball,” Cyrus told the audience, “‘You know, I couldn’t fit this award in my bag but I did find this,'” before pulling out what appeared to be a joint from her Chanel bag and lighting it.
Years later she said that moment was why she was no longer invited to awards shows .
During her “Malibu” era, Cyrus came under fire for her comments on rap and the hip-hop music genres, which she already had been accused of appropriating during her “Bangerz” album.
“I can’t listen to that anymore. That’s what pushed me out of the hip-hop scene a little,” she told Billboard. “It was too much ‘Lamborghini, got my Rolex, got a girl on my c–k’ — I am so not that.”
She later defended her comments in a since-deleted Instagram post, saying she prefers “uplifting, conscious” rap.
“I have always and will continue to love and celebrate hip-hop as I’ve collaborated with some of the very best,” Cyrus wrote. “At this point in my life I am expanding personally/musically and gravitating more towards uplifting, conscious rap! As I get older I understand the effect music has on the world & seeing where we are today I feel the younger generation needs to hear positive powerful lyrics!”
When Cyrus and Hemsworth announced the shocking news that they were divorcing , rumors swirled that she cheated on him with Kaitlynn Carter .
In a lengthy Twitter thread copping to her many faux pas over the years, Cyrus vehemently denied cheating on Hemsworth.
“I can admit to a lot of things but I refuse to admit that my marriage ended because of cheating. Liam and I have been together for a decade. I’ve said it before & it remains true, I love Liam and always will,” she wrote.
Though Cyrus has been through the ringer in terms of scandals and controversies, her attitude can be summed up by her tweet : “I am proud to say, I am simply in a different place from where i was when I was a younger.”

Miley Cyrus, like a lot of Disney stars, has more or less grown up in front of our very eyes. We remember the fresh-faced Miley debuting as Hannah Montana in the Disney Channel show of the same name. That was in 2006. But by 2008, she was weary of the squeaky clean Disney thing. So, she broke out. There were nearly nude magazine covers, suggestive pole dances, and even leaked photos.
It was all very tame compared to what came next, namely her twerking, bumping, grinding, drinking phase that came as she approached 20. She seemed to work so hard at being outrageous that it was somehow seen for exactly what it was: an attempt to catapult her career into the stratosphere. It worked pretty well. But looking back on it all, it is also a lot awkward and embarrassing to watch. Along the way, she found and lost love.
Here are 20 pictures of Miley being Miley. Sometimes it is painful to watch. But sometimes it is just plain good fun.
The Internet went nuts back in 2014 when Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry shared a full-on lip-lock. Not just peck, but a smooch. Later Cyrus revealed that Katy Perry's song "I Kissed a Girl" was about her . As the lyrics say, "I kissed a girl, and I liked it." Indeed. They both seemed to like it, a lot.
Let's be honest. All the Cyrus outrageous behavior is about one thing: getting noticed. In August of 2013, she brought her punk, hip-hop, "barely there" wardrobe to the stage of the MTV Video Music Awards. Singing "We Can't Stop", she twerked and did a bump and grind thing against singer Robin Thicke. Shock horror and lots of attention.
The Disney Channel's Hannah Montana first aired in 2006. Hannah was a schoolgirl who moonlighted as a rock star. Miley rocked the roll. In many ways, it was perfect for an aspiring singer. But by 2008, as we will see, the teenager had set her sights on breaking away from her squeaky clean Disney image. It was all very dorky. Save me from Minnie, she seemed to say.
It seemed an unusual match. The hunky, easy-going Australian Hunger Games star and the totally intense, in-your-face bad girl of rock. They began dating in 2009. It was a kind of off-again, on-again thing. But in 2018, they got married. Some predicted it wouldn't last. It didn't. Less than a year into not so wedded bliss, they split. Interestingly, it was Liam who filed for divorce.
Miley Cyrus came out as bisexual to her mother when she was only 14-years-old. Her mother was worried Miley would go to hell. But she stood by her. Miley has gone on and on and on about the subject, now identifying herself as "pansexual", which means she is attracted to "all gender identities" . That, by the way, would include transgender people.
In 2008, Selena Gomez and her best friend Demi Lovato came onboard the Disney train. Gomez appeared on an episode of Hannah Montana and ended up getting her own series. Miley, probably jealous, "mocked and parodied" Gomez and Lovato online. While she (sort of) apologized, the whole thing developed into a running feud between Gomez and our Miley.
In 2011, Miley's father country star Billy Ray Cyrus was on a crusade to tell the world that Hannah Montana had ruined his family's life? Why? Well by 2008, Miley-scandals started appearing. He blamed the people managing her, those who took a percentage of her money. At one point, he even made reference to Satan being a part of it all. Miley's take? Give it a rest, dad.
From her late teens, Miley was a full-blown pack of trouble. From mock-orgies to flashing her private parts on stage, she was out of control. She was shot smoking a joint and caught pulling her pants down to relieve herself in the bushes at a birthday bash. Spot Miley at night and you were likely to see a stumbling, drunken mess.
OK. Admittedly, having words from a 1910 speech given by President Teddy Roosevelt seems a bit odd (because it is). The excerpt is all about living life to the fullest and daring to do your best. Very lofty sentiments. It was more fun when they had matching bottles of Australian breakfast spread Vegemite tattooed on their extremities.
It's the battle of the divas. Miley started it by posting a picture of her head photoshopped onto Nicki's body. It went downhill from there, with Nicki complaining that "skinny" women got nominations for Video Music Awards more than buxom ones. Miley took this personally and ranted and raved. Then in 2015, Nicki got onto the VMA stage and calls Miley the "b" word. And on and on.
It's 2013 just turned 21-years-old Miley is in Minneapolis, Minnesota for a local radio station's Jingle Ball. She claimed before she went on stage that she was the drunkest she had ever been and would probably throw up on stage. She didn't, but apparently it was a close-run thing. The Jingle Ball fiasco was at the height of her most outrageous stage.
Liam Hemsworth and Miley split in August of 2019 after Miley was spotted kissing Kaitlynn Carter in Italy. Then accusations of drugs and infidelity started flying around from both camps. It got pretty nasty, including a dispute over which of the two would gain custody of their dogs, cats, horses and at least one pig. Miley unilaterally declared she was keeping the lot under her roof. Liam decided to cave on that one.
She was 16-years-old and into her third year of Hannah Montana when she sang at the Teen Choice Awards in 2009. Only thing was, she was gyrating and doing all manner of very adult moves using a thing that looked like a stripper's pole. Inappropriate, said parents of Hannah Montana fans. Disney? They said they had nothing to say about the performance.
2008 and 2009 were bumper years in the campaign to leave the Disney image behind. Stripper's poles aside, Miley had declared herself bisexual two years before. The leaked pictures are of Miley cuddling, kissing, snuggling up to boyfriend Thomas Sturges. OK, they are pretty tame, we admit it. But to go from squeaky clean to this was shocking back then. It only got worse.
To go from Hannah Montana to nearly nude pictures on a magazine cover is quite a stretch. Shock and horror came pouring out after Vanity Fair featured an almost naked teenage Miley on its cover in 2008. Exploitation was a word that was used a lot. Miley apologized, but years later retracted the "I am sorry" thing.
Miley in socially aware mode. She took a homeless guy by the name of Jesse Helt to the VMA's in 2014 and when she won an award, he accepted it on her behalf. He gave a nice speech about surviving on the streets. It was a touching moment. Only thing was, Jesse had a criminal record and was wanted in Oregon for, amongst other things, running away during his probationary period. He got cuffed and jailed.
Talk about a spoiled brat complex. This one takes the cake. It's 2009 and Miley and friends are posing for a picture. She's pulling a slant-eyed look. The Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) came down on her like a ton of bricks, saying it was insulting. Given nearly naked magazine covers, stripper's poles, and the like, it was a sticky time for our Miley.
In the Winter of 2016, we're betting Plastik mag sold out. Why? Well, it featured covers with a topless Miley Cyrus, her modesty preserved only by carefully place (very small) pasties. They matched the eye patch she wore. The magazine's web site claims it has "a reputation for ground-breaking photography, fashion, and editorial". That's one way of putting it.
