Anime isn't a stranger to making a statement by juxtaposing cute characters with depressingly dark themes, making them all the more horrific.
Generally speaking, anime is often dismissed by some people for looking too "kiddy." Given the medium's preference for bright colors, exaggerated expressions, cute characters, and other quirks, this isn't too surprising.
However, just because an anime looks like it was made for children doesn't mean it actually is. There are a lot of anime out there that embrace anime's vibrant style to tell a surprisingly dark story that tackles themes that may hit too close to home.
Despite it having a more mature take on a love triangle between Makoto, Kotonoha, and Sekai, School Days seemed like an otherwise unassuming romantic comedy about young students. But as the episodes went on, it was clear that the three were bottling up an unhealthy amount of resentment that exploded violently in the finale.
After Makoto emotionally manipulated then rudely dumped her, Sekai brutally killed him before she was murdered herself by Kotonoha in revenge. As melodramatic and trashy as it could be, School Days took the clichéd conflicts of the cutesy rom-com to their worst extremes and showed why playing with other's emotions is a really, really bad idea.
At first, School-Live! looked like any other cutesy school anime. Here, Yuki loved going to school, especially when it was time to hang out with the other members of the School Life Club. However, the memorable pilot episode's final seconds revealed that all this takes place exclusively in her mind. In reality, the school fell to a zombie outbreak and the club's members are the only survivors.
To cope with the trauma of barely surviving the undead invasion, Yuki mentally escaped to a fantasy where school continues as usual, complete with her now-dead classmates and teachers still talking to her. The anime uses this to show that sympathetic escapism will never beat the alternative that is the acceptance of hard, often depressing, truths.
When it was first announced, Beastars was jokingly referred to as anime's answer to Zootopia. Surprisingly, this punchline only scratched the anime's surface. Despite starring anthropomorphic animals that ranged from adorable to cool, the anime was really a mix of erotica, a murder mystery, crime fiction, social critique, and more.
The characters' animal heritages were used for hard-hitting commentaries about race and prejudice, while Legosi and Haru's romance had a lot more to it than just two students' young love. Beyond the campus drama was a well-realized criminal underworld, which became a bigger part of the characters' lives as the episodes passed.
At first glance, Odd Taxi looked like a relatable adult sitcom about an anthropomorphic character stuck in an unfulfilling nine-to-five job. Basically, some people thought it would be the next Aggretsuko . Instead, Odokawa's nightly taxi routes and encounters with eccentric passengers were the beginning of a complex web of conspiracies.
Besides it revolving around a missing girl who may or may not be dead, Odd Taxi delved into the psyches of Odokawa and everyone else working or living in the shady parts of town he passes. Though there are many introspective character arcs, Odokawa is still the focus, and the anime's anthropomorphic world is directly tied to past traumas he has yet to overcome.
The world of Girls' Last Tour is on its last breaths. Not only did an unspecified past event destroy civilization, but what's left of the human race is simply too few to repopulate the barren planet. Despite this grim post-apocalyptic setting, the anime's characters look like they came out of a cute moé show, especially the protagonists, Chito and Yuuri.
Chito and Yuuri trek the dying world and enjoy its remaining pleasures, like stumbling upon old technology or exploring interesting ruins. If not for its bittersweet resignation to death and emptiness, Girls' Last Tour would've fit perfectly well with other innocent slice-of-life anime about girls enjoying hobbies, like K-ON! or Laid-Back Camp .
Made In Abyss focuses on the aspiring adventurer Riko and her robot friend Reg. Together, they explore The Abyss, a massive cave system that's so large and sprawling that it's divided into layers that even have their own ecosystems. As welcoming as this premise may sound, the anime is anything but lighthearted and cheerful.
The Abyss itself is a nightmarish world of its own, populated by dangerous beasts and more monstrous people who are more than willing to enact all kinds of horrors on others for whatever reason they can conjure. Riko and Reg's trip to the Abyss' center where Riko's mother is apparently staying is wrought with more desperation and suffering than adventure.
When it starts, Penguindrum seems like an absurd mix of magical realism and slice-of-life drama, what with twin brothers Kanba and Shouma making a deal with a penguin-themed princess to bring their sister back from the dead. However, things take a sharp, dark turn when the characters' truths are revealed.
The siblings are the children of terrorists who committed deadly bombings in 1995, the same year that the real-life Tokyo Subway Sarin Attacks occurred. Penguindrum used surrealism to reflect on the human cost of such a crime, where society at large would rather forget it while guilting the younger generations with the responsibility to fix the damage.
While it wasn't the first of its kind, the original Higurashi: When They Cry undoubtedly started the craze of horrifying anime that had misleadingly cute art styles and character designs in the 2000s. In fact, to the uninitiated, Higurashi looks like a child-friendly slice-of-life anime about a fun vacation in the Hinamizawa countryside.
This first impression only makes the characters' suffering (which includes brutal murders and grueling torture) and the Great Hinamizawa Disaster all the more shocking and terrifying. What's worse is that Keiichi, Rena, Rika, and everyone else don't just die once, but countless times across a multiverse of parallel realities that they can't escape.
With its child heroes and their cute pets, Shadow Star (or Narutaru ) could easily be mistaken for a Pokémon clone despite being made by the man behind the equally depressing Bokurano. In reality, the anime shows how the Dragon's Children wouldn't just make things worse for already troubled kids, but how they'd threaten reality itself.
Shina Tamai and Hoshimaru may be genuinely nice, but the same can't be said for their fellow Dragon Bearer/Dragon's Children pairs who use their powers to bully others or go on a bloody rampage. As dark as the anime was, the manga went even further with an apocalyptically nihilistic ending that rivals The End Of Evangelion .
There's no recent anime as misleadingly cute as Puella Magi Madoka Magica . At first glance, it looked like another addition to the oversaturated magical girl genre. But as the episodes went by, Madoka didn't just reveal itself to be darker and gorier than its contemporaries, but that it was also an existential nightmare.
Here, being a magical girl really is suffering, but their pain barely registered as a blip in a r
