Chicago Cubs Edge Out New York Mets in Thrilling Extra-Inning Showdown

May 10, 2025 – Wrigley Field, Chicago

In a nail-biting contest that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the Chicago Cubs defeated the New York Mets 5-4 in 10 innings on Friday night, thanks to a walk-off RBI single from rookie sensation Jake Carter.

The game was a back-and-forth battle from the start, with both teams exchanging blows early. Mets’ slugger Pete Alonso launched a two-run homer in the first inning, but the Cubs responded quickly with a solo shot from Ian Happ in the bottom of the frame.

Cubs’ ace Justin Steele delivered a solid performance, striking out eight over six innings, while Mets’ starter Kodai Senga kept Chicago’s hitters in check with his signature 'ghost fork' ball. The game remained tied 3-3 until the eighth, when Francisco Lindor drove in the go-ahead run with a clutch double off Cubs reliever Héctor Neris.

But the Cubs weren’t done. In the bottom of the ninth, Cody Bellinger tied the game with a solo blast to right field, sending the Wrigley faithful into a frenzy and forcing extra innings.

After Cubs closer Adbert Alzolay escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the 10th, the stage was set for Jake Carter, the 23-year-old call-up, who lined a sharp single to right, scoring Dansby Swanson from second and sealing the dramatic victory.

'Just trying to stay calm and do my job,' Carter said postgame. 'This team never quits, and neither do our fans.'

The win moves the Cubs to 22-15 on the season, while the Mets drop to 19-18. The two teams will face off again tomorrow in what promises to be another exciting matchup.
