The CSS Profile is an additional student aid application beyond the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) required at hundreds of private and public schools to be considered for institutional scholarships and grants. If you complete the CSS Profile, you’re still required to fill out the FAFSA if you want state or federal grants, scholarships and loans.
The CSS Profile is an online financial aid application available from the College Board, the organization that developed the SAT test. The form collects additional financial information for higher education institutions outside of what the FAFSA covers to help estimate a family’s ability to pay for college . For example, you’ll be expected to provide information about primary residence home equity, annual medical bills and private school tuition for the student and their siblings.
Approximately 400 colleges, universities and scholarship programs use the CSS Profile. The College Board has compiled a list of participating institutions.
Students create a login on the College Board website. Then, they’ll fill in information about their financial circumstances. Everyone reporting income should have their W2s, tax returns and asset information nearby. Asset information includes but isn’t limited to bank account balances, investment account balances, small business value and home equity.
As with the FAFSA, the CSS Profile uses these financial data points to calculate your expected family contribution . Colleges use expected family contribution in putting together your financial aid package .
Each college or university that uses the CSS Profile to determine financial aid sets its own requirements for who qualifies for financial aid and how much the student will be offered. For instance, one school may calculate financial aid considering all biological parents, whether or not they are the custodial parents. Another may not. Other schools also may figure in other factors such as cost of living differently.
There are several key differences between the FAFSA and the CSS Profile. The CSS Profile:
The CSS Profile provides access to a large source of funding that may not be available through the FAFSA alone. The CSS Profile takes a closer look at family finances than FAFSA to allow families to share their full story with financial aid offices.
Note: Any information you provide on the FAFSA should match the information you provide on the CSS Profile. For instance, reported bank account information should be the same. Income from tax returns may be different as the FAFSA uses tax returns from a year earlier than the CSS Profile does.
Any first-year undergraduate student or transfer student applying to a school that asks for the CSS Profile and wants to receive financial aid will need to fill out a profile. Graduate, professional and returning students should check with the financial aid office to see if a CSS Profile application is required.
CSS Profile deadlines can vary from school to school. However, the opening date is the same for all: Generally, it becomes available on Oct. 1 each year. In 2020, the form opened on Sept. 15, so it’s a good idea to check the CSS Profile website for the opening date in early September.
The College Board offers a free EFC calculator for U.S. and Canadian students. However, it’s not always the best way to estimate your award. You can use net cost calculators on school websites, but you can also contact the school’s financial aid office to see what differences there may be for this year versus last year in how much aid is awarded and how it’s distributed. It’s always a good idea to call financial aid offices as you may find out about other scholarship opportunities.
The CSS Profile is $25 for the first school and $16 for each additional school. If a student needs results sent to five schools, the total cost is $89. Transfer students are treated like other entering students and may be required to submit a CSS Profile and pay the same fee.
Graduate and professional students in participating schools may be required to file a form as well. The fees are the same.
Students returning to the same college don’t necessarily have to fill out the CSS Profile or pay the fee more than once.
“Overall, 61% of CSS Profile institutions require a returning student population to complete the application,” says College Board spokesperson Amanda Ingersoll. “However, this requirement may vary by population as some institutions will require domestic or international students to complete as a returning student.”
For instance, low income students may have the requirement waived.
Fourteen steps may make it seem like filing your CSS Profile is going to be an overwhelming experience. But if you follow this guide, you should greatly reduce your chance for errors or omissions:
Before you apply, the College Board will determine if you qualify for a waiver. There are a number of requirements any first-time undergraduate student can meet in order to qualify:
If you are applying to one of the nearly 400 colleges that requires the CSS Profile to receive financial aid from the college, fill it out. If you can’t afford it, look into potential fee waivers from the College Board or from the school’s financial aid office. Be prepared with all your financial documents and discuss family financial circumstances.
