The libertarian case for cryptocurrency as an alternative to government-controlled currency

The Case

The libertarian case for cryptocurrency: a currency not controlled by any government or central bank, that cannot be inflated by political decision, and that allows transactions without intermediation of regulated financial institutions represents the closest approximation of free-market money that the libertarian tradition has sought since the end of the gold standard.

The Reality

The libertarian promise of a currency immune to government control has been partially achieved and partially undermined. Governments have not been able to inflate Bitcoin, but they have been able to regulate the exchanges through which most cryptocurrency transactions occur, effectively bringing the major cryptocurrency markets under regulatory control through the point of entry into the traditional financial system.
