I enjoyed everything about this season so much that I watched it 3 times and really wish they would make a second one of Polina & Dmitry's life together <3

I loved the whole drama and Season 2 but want to know if there will be a Season 3 since she was left in the tormenting clutches of the woman he spurned for her. Anyone?

Haven’t finished the series yet but it has an intriguing story and a very talented cast. The only thing that really takes away from the show and makes it difficult and hard to understand is that the translations are so terrible for non-Russian speakers. The translator should honestly be reprimanded because he/she did a terrible job translating from Russian to English. I don’t speak or understand Russian and can barely comprehend the subtitles. I wish they would have done a better job translating because I would love to have a clearer idea of the dialogue and what the characters are saying during crucial scenes. Sometimes very important scenes lose so much impact because the sentences in English don’t make any sense. The story has potential and seems interesting but it’s very difficult to follow the story for people who don’t speak Russian. Another thing I noticed is that they have a Russian male voice over in some scenes whenever someone speaks French and it really takes away from pivotal scenes. The male voice is way too loud and speaks at the same time as the characters. I couldn’t figure out why it was happening until I noticed they were speaking French. Edit: Honestly the only reason I continued the show is because the actors who play Dmitriy and Polina are phenomenal. They have great chemistry and their relationship was lovely to watch. They have such a beautiful story but after around episode 13 (somewhere around that) the show kind of goes completely off the rails? It gets very soap-opera-esque and I didn’t like where the story went at all. They chose to focus on very dull plot points and I was disappointed there were so few scenes of the main couple during the second half of the season. They were kept apart for several episodes and were truly the show’s strength. Overall the biggest problem are the strange subtitles that will make any non-Russian speaker confused. You basically get an idea of what’s happening as another reviewer said but you are left lost many times. The cast barely saves the show which is sad because it had alot of potential as a story. It felt like they needed a whole other season to finish character arcs and not make everything super rushed. The organization of the episodes is all over the place and the characters’ motives just aren’t explained at all? Just ends up being kind of strange and confusing which is too bad because it could have been written much better and had some good themes to explore writing-wise. Seems like they sort of ran out of ideas or gave up on the second half of the show. Also when I got to the end of episode 17, the subtitles are completely missing! It’s an important scene and I’d really like to know what they’re saying if any Russian speaker can translate. On another note, I was struck by how beautiful the cinematography/directing was in this show. A few scenes caught my eye due to how artistically they were filmed. I'll definitely be looking into the director's work after this because the images/poignant scenes were impressive. Overall had great potential but was pretty disappointed by where the plot went during the second half of the season. Stick around for the main couple and the impactful cinematography.

We decided to watch television from other countries to better understand their people and cultures. We watched "The Road to Calvary" last year, about the Russian Revolution, and it was excellent. Cast, acting, subtlety, sets, costumes, likable characters in a heartbreaking setting. Five stars. So based on some of the reviews we decided to give this one a go. If they could have found a Russian Julian Fellowes (hey or even Tolstoy or Pasternak!) the writing might have had been better. Granted, we could have missed a lot because of the translation. The villainous characters were almost drawn like Snidely Whiplash, I kept wondering, were the Russian people so blatantly cruel and stupid, or is it this depiction? Although I read Maxim Gorky's autobiographical trilogy and he described a lot of cruelty and heartlessness in their society in the late 1800s. As others have stated, the two leads, Polina and Dmitri are both wonderful, they are bright and attractive and have good hearts. She doesn't communicate enough with him. A lot of bad things happen to her and she doesn't tell him. Is this 19th century plotting, or bad writing? I don't know. The wet/nurse cook is wonderful, as is the priest, and so is the little boy who is the son of the couple who buy the property of the dead prince. If you've watched The Forsyte Saga, Downton Abbey, Pride and Prejudice, Middlemarch, The Way We Live Now, Little Dorritt, Our Mutual Friend, David Copperfield, Oliver Twist, and many other miniseries done in the last twenty years you will probably not find this up to par. The grand house of the estate looks like a fairy princess play house from Disneyland. Many of the costumes look like polyester. The shots of the surrounding countryside are gorgeous, and overall it has a quality that is egging us on to keep watching it but it could have been so much better. We're 2/3 through it so we're not going to give up til it's over, but I have to say I feel like I'm watching a soap opera. We watched the Australian miniseries, "A Place to Call Home" and at first because of the lead actress, we really liked it but then it became a ridiculous soap opera. Main characters behaving against their character, evil characters that almost cackled in their scheming, etc. etc. But back to this one, my main take away so far is how awful it is for anyone to grow up under tyranny, where life's simple freedoms are taken away by others who have no real right to dominate them. Societies like this still exist and the suffering they cause is unconscionable. For that reason it's worth a watch, just as an education to anyone living in the west who has no idea what other cultures have suffered.

If I could give this 2 1/2 , I would. Good points: 1) You dont need to pay much attention to follow although this is hard due to the fact that its in subtitles that are terribly bad and make you more confused than if you were assuming what they were saying. 2) The scene staging and design with custumes are well done and quite accurate to the time period, I would give them 5 stars for this. 3)This is a PG-13 type of film, so if you are a fan of lifetime movies or dont want to watch graphic content then this just about passes, although they dont seem to mind an episode of female nudity (Not sexualised-only one episode). Bad points: 1) This appears a bit of a low budget film because of the overacting, although you can develop a bit of a connection with some of the characters. 2) Its misleading- she is not a mistress but part of the aristocrats who then gets stripped of her title.(Also how she is an aristocrat as an orphan is unclear, its seems to be common knowledge but then it isnt, but then it doesn't matter....confusing! 3) The storyline is cliche and unrealistic. You are left confused at times by certain characters actions as they seem extreme and arbitrary. This could be due to the very bad subtitles which are probably quite inaccurate, but I think its more likely due to it being a weak storyline. For example, the evil guys' intention....I still have no idea why he was bad to the main girl/boy....its seems like he was acting with by some arcane set of rules? Another point, some events are just ridiculous, and lack practical purpose. I.e The mistress who is a pilar of purity and religious dedication to God, posing as prositute in a brothel in search of a friend who isnt there (they dedicate a whole episode and 1/2 to this?). 3)The length - this series could have been done in 3 episodes, and they would have been able to fit all the key events in without any difficult. 18 episodes later, you are shocked at how they dragged this out. Conclusion - this is a mindless series which is watchable due to the design team and recreation of old Russia. I would not recommend this as a good series but it is watchable if you dont mind subtitles and dont really want to feel any type of way about anything. I have to say I dont know how they have got away with such great reviews? If this was a bbc or hollywood production this would rank quite low in terms of period dramas.
