Crested Gecko Care Made Easy

The crested gecko is a favored choice among reptile enthusiasts. These creatures are ideal for novice pet owners, but even experienced reptile keepers appreciate having them as pets. With a wide variety of patterns and colors available, these geckos are a distinguished favorite. However, it is important to know how to care for them properly before bringing one home. Proper crested gecko care is essential for maintaining the health and well-being of your pet.

Crested geckos are nocturnal animals, which means that they are most active during the night. While this may discourage some people from keeping them as pets because they won't see much of them during the day, there are advantages to this behavior as well. One advantage is that they don't require much light. Most reptiles need a light that contains UV rays to stay healthy, and setting up a bulb that emits UV rays in a small cage can be challenging. However, crested geckos don't need significant amounts of UV rays, so you don't have to worry about the light in their terrarium.

Unlike most reptiles, crested geckos are omnivorous. This means that they eat both vegetables, such as berries and pureed fruit, and meat, mainly insects, though they may also eat their own offspring.

Crested geckos get their name from the fringe that runs down their back, starting above their eyes. This fringe also gives them the nickname "eyelash gecko." Their scientific name is Rhacodactylus ciliatus.
