Creighton Triumphs Over Louisville in Overtime

Creighton Stuns Louisville in Thrilling Overtime Victory to Advance in NCAA Tournament

March 24, 2024 | Indianapolis, IN — In a heart-stopping showdown that will be remembered as one of the most electrifying games of the 2024 NCAA Tournament, the Creighton Bluejays outlasted the Louisville Cardinals in a 92-88 overtime thriller to secure their spot in the Elite Eight.

The game, played at a raucous Gainbridge Fieldhouse, was a battle of wills from the opening tip. Louisville, led by their star guard Terrence Clarke Jr., came out firing, building an early 12-point lead in the first half. Clarke, who finished with 28 points and 7 assists, seemed unstoppable as he sliced through Creighton’s defense with ease.

But Creighton, known for their resilience under head coach Greg McDermott, refused to back down. Senior forward Ryan Kalkbrenner dominated the paint, scoring 22 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, while guard Trey Alexander ignited the Bluejays’ comeback with a series of clutch three-pointers. Alexander finished with a game-high 30 points, including a crucial three-pointer in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime.

The overtime period was a nail-biter, with both teams trading baskets and the lead changing hands multiple times. With under a minute to play and the score tied at 88-88, Creighton’s Baylor Scheierman delivered the play of the game, stealing the ball from Louisville’s point guard and racing down the court for a go-ahead layup. Louisville had one last chance to tie, but Clarke’s three-point attempt rimmed out, and Creighton’s Steven Ashworth sealed the victory with two free throws.

'This team never quits,' said McDermott after the game. 'We’ve been through so much this season, and to see them fight like this on the biggest stage is just incredible. Louisville is a phenomenal team, and this was a battle for the ages.'

For Louisville, the loss marks the end of a remarkable season under first-year head coach Kenny Payne, who led the Cardinals to their first Sweet 16 appearance since 2019. 'I’m proud of my guys,' Payne said. 'They left everything on the floor tonight. Sometimes the ball just doesn’t bounce your way.'

Creighton now advances to the Elite Eight, where they will face the winner of the Houston vs. Duke matchup. With their relentless defense and explosive offense, the Bluejays are proving they are a legitimate contender for the national championship.

As the final buzzer sounded, Creighton’s players and fans erupted in celebration, knowing they had just been part of an instant classic. For Louisville, it’s a heartbreaking end, but for Creighton, the dream lives on.
