There’s no doubt Crazy Rich Asians is going to make major waves when it hits theaters on August 15 — and not just because the trailers are so good that there’s pretty much no way the full movie won’t be. It’s also going to be a major moment for Asian representation in film. After all, the summer blockbuster based on the novel by author Kevin Kwan and brought to life by director Jon M. Chu will also feature an Asian-majority cast — the first Hollywood film to do so in a quarter century, since 1993’s The Joy Luck Club .
The story follows Chinese-American Rachel Chu as she joins her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, on a visit to his home country of Singapore for his best friend’s wedding. Rachel may have expected to be introduced to Nick’s friends, family, and an entirely new country — but what she didn’t expect was a first-class ticket to a totally different world, full of Southeast Asia’s wealthiest elite.
The film, which is set in Singapore, features not only familiar Hollywood faces (such as Constance Wu and Awkwafina , but also amazing talent from all over the world. While you wait to see how Rachel’s entree into Singaporean society plays out, brush up on the incredible list of actors who will be gracing the screen and the characters they’ll be playing.
Constance Wu is best known for her role as Taiwanese immigrant mom Jessica Huang on ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat . But in Crazy Rich Asians , she ditches the fake accent and the mom jeans to play the film’s young protagonist, ABC (American-Born Chinese) NYU Economics professor, Rachel Chu.
Henry Golding’s acting résumé is relatively brief, but the British-Malaysian personality is a no stranger to the screen: He’s hosted a variety of shows in the past several years, including BBC’s The Travel Show . Now, Henry is solidifying his Hollywood status as Nick Young, Rachel’s handsome and charming Oxford-educated history professor boyfriend with a British accent — whose family happens to be extremely wealthy...or, should we say, crazy rich .

Tan Kheng Hua is a Singaporean actor who is most famous for her nearly ten-year stint as Margaret Phua in the Singaporean sitcom, Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd . She plays Kerry Chu, Rachel’s single mother who immigrated to the United States and worked tirelessly to support her daughter.
The Malaysian actor got her start as an action star in Hong Kong before making a name for herself in Hollywood on films like 1997’s 007: Tomorrow Never Dies and the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon series. Michelle, who insists on doing her own stunts, long ago proved she’s a force to be reckoned with — and in Crazy Rich Asians , she maintains her fierce attitude as Eleanor Young, Nick’s overprotective mom who strongly disapproves of his relationship with Rachel.
Lisa, who also starred in The Joy Luck Club , plays Nick’s Ah Ma (grandmother) Su Yi on his father’s side. Though Su Yi may seem quiet and meek, she’s actually the person holds all the power in the Young family.
Awkwafina certainly keeps busy: The comedian and rapper already hit the big screen earlier this year in Ocean’s 8 . In Crazy Rich Asians , she plays Goh Peik Lin, Rachel’s rich (but not quite crazy rich), Singaporean college best friend who helps her adjust to the lush life.
The Dr. Ken and Community star is Goh Wye Mun, Peik Lin’s wacky, easygoing, U.S.-educated dad. The character comes from “new money” and loves big-name labels, lots of gold — and basically all things shiny and flashy.

The veteran Singaporean actor is most famous for her role as housewife Dolly in the English-language sitcom, Under One Roof. She brings her comedic skills to Crazy Rich Asians as Neena Goh, Peik Lin’s dog-loving mother.
Calvin is a Malaysian writer who plays P.T. — Peik Lin’s quiet, socially-awkward teen brother who has a crush on Rachel. Most of the time he’s hiding behind his phone, and is kind of a creeper. Still, his heart’s in the right place, and he contributes largely to the comic relief in the romantic-comedy.

You may recognize Nico from the NBC series Superstore . In CRA , he plays Nick’s friendly and fashionable cousin, Oliver T’sien, who help guides Rachel through life with his family and Singaporean high society.

Gemma Chan, who stars on the AMC series, Humans , plays the CRA role of Nick’s favorite cousin — and Southeast Asia’s classiest fashion icon — Astrid Leong. Despite her wealth and penchant for expensive things, Astrid remains humble and kind, and is Rachel’s most trustworthy ally. But she, too, has her own drama to deal with.

Pierre Png, who has starred in Singaporean series such as The Little Nyonya and Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd (alongside CRA co-star Tan Kheng Hua), plays Michael Teo, Astrid’s military-man-turned-startup-genius husband. Like Rachel, Michael feels like an outsider in elitist Asian society — and there’s plenty of drama to show for it.

The Australian-Asian actor — who you may recognize from films like I, Frankenstein and *Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny” or the Netflix TV series Marco Polo — plays Colin Khoo, Nick Young’s childhood best friend from their international school days. Back then, Nick was Colin’s defender against bullies; now, he’s the best man for Colin’s wedding to Araminta Lee — the high-society Asian nuptials of the century.

Sonoya Mizuno plays Araminta Lee, the model (with a wealthy family, like most of the characters) who is engaged to Nick’s best friend, Colin Khoo. Perhaps Sonoya drew from real-life experience for this role: In addition to her experience as a ballerina and an actor (she appeared in La La Land , among other films), Sonoya has modeled for the likes of Ivy Park and Calvin Klein .

Constance Lau, a Singaporean actor and model, plays Celine Lim — who’s known by some as “Radio One Asia” for her skill of spreading news to the rest of the young socialites and their gossiping mothers.

Selena Tan has taken on her fair share of jobs in film and theatre: She’s an actor, director, writer, and producer, and she founded Singaporean theater and arts company Dream Academy . In CRA , Selena plays Alexandra “Alix” Cheng, Nick Young’s aunt and the youngest daughter of family matriarch Shang Su Yi.

Not only is Janice an experienced stage and television actor, but she’s also a former Nominated Member of Parliament in Singapore. In this role, Janice plays Felicity Leong, Su Yi’s oldest daughter and Astrid Leong’s controlling mother. Felicity, Eleanor, and Alix regularly get together for bible study — though they spend more time gossiping that talking about the gospel.
The English-Chinese actor has become a fixture in the United Kingdom, appearing in series such as Stan Lee’s Lucky Man and Zapped . Now, Jing is making her Hollywood film debut as Amanda Ling, Nick’s former flame.
