The crankshaft rear main seal holds significant importance within the engine's operation. Positioned at the lower part of the engine, the crankshaft collaborates with pistons and connecting rods to harness the energy produced from combustion. This rotational force from the crankshaft powers the transmission, propelling the wheels forward.
For the transmission's flywheel or flex plate to connect to the crankshaft, it extends beyond the engine's rear. To prevent engine oil from seeping out through this gap and to shield the engine from dust and dirt infiltration, a meticulously crafted rear oil seal is utilized.
Usually made of either natural or synthetic rubber, this seal is further supported by a metal ring on its outer edge. A delicate spring maintains the proper tension, ensuring the rubber stays in close contact with the end of the crankshaft, forming an effective barrier.
As time passes, factors like heat, poor engine oil quality, and general wear contribute to the rear main seal's potential failure, resulting in oil leaks. When such leaks occur, prompt replacement of the seal becomes necessary to preserve the engine's optimal performance and prevent any further complications.
Cost to replace rear main seal
The engine's primary driving force is derived from the crankshaft, situated in the lower part of the engine block, typically just above the oil pan (also called the sump). The crankshaft is equipped with counterweights that aid in splashing oil to lubricate the main bearings.
To ensure the transmission and crankshaft pulley are effectively driven, the crankshaft is equipped with front and rear oil seals, which serve to prevent oil from escaping and to keep dirt and debris at bay. However, over time, these seals may deteriorate, resulting in oil leaks.
There is no fixed replacement interval for these seals; they should be replaced only when they start exhibiting leakage. The cost of replacing the rear main seal varies depending on the vehicle's make and model, ranging from $400 to over $1500.
The primary cost-contributing factor is usually the labor involved, as accessing the rear main seal necessitates the removal of the transmission from the vehicle.
